Senators call for state intervention in Asif case

*The Senate Standing Committee on Sports in Pakistan has requested the intervention of president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in securing the release of fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who has been in detention in Dubai for suspected possession of an illegal substance since June 1. *

**"Mohammad Asif is a superstar of Pakistan **and we should not leave him alone over there [Dubai] and should not spare any effort to bring him back," senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhary said during the committee meeting on Wednesday. "We request the president and the premier to intervene in the matter and bring back the superstar.

"Asif represents Pakistan and the [cricket] board should also talk to the president of Pakistan, who is the patron of the board, to do something in this regard."

Nasim Ashraf, the Pakistan board chairman, replying to a question from senator Enver Baig said that they hadn't received any information about Asif from Dubai. "We have hired a legal firm which is working on the case," Ashraf said. "However, it hasn't yet been established exactly what substance was he carrying with him."

Baig, an outspoken PCB critic who has previously criticised the PCB's efforts to help Asif, said that "an exemplary punishment be given to Asif" and suggested that he be banned for life if found guilty.

It is likely that the PCB will take action against Asif should he return, but even if they don't, the ICC might. They have been monitoring the situation and it is possible that Asif will face penalties under the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), of which the ICC is a signatory, once he is released.

Dave Richardson, ICC's acting chief executive, said that they had asked the PCB to keep them updated on the Asif issue. "As far as we know he has not been charged as yet," Richardson said. "But since the ICC is a signatory of WADA regulations if he is charged then he is liable to penalties under WADA code of conduct."

Officially he'll be deported from Dubai and will arrive tonight in Pakistan. According to the Geo report no charges have been filed.**

Pak cricketer Asif to leave UAE in 24-hrs with life-long entry ban

DUBAI - A decision regarding the deportation of Pakistani fast bowler Mohammed Asif has been taken, and he is expected to leave the country within the next 24 hours, said sources on Thursday.

Asif has been in detention at the Dubai Airport Detention Centre since June 1 for possessing a banned substance. According to sources, ‘A decision regarding his deportation has been taken and he is expected to leave the detention centre as soon as all the administrative procedures are completed,’ said the source, adding that the case had not been referred to court. ‘Since he is being deported for a drug-related offence, Asif is likely to face a life-long entry ban to the UAE,’ said the source.

Twenty-four-year-old Asif was held in Dubai while transiting on his way to Pakistan from India after playing in the Indian Premier League matches. He was found carrying between 1-2 grammes of hashish.

Earlier, sources told Khaleej Times that the test results on the substance carried by Asif was found to be hashish. Since the amount was considered small, it was decided earlier on that Asif would be deported without any charges being levied on him. However, Dubai Public Prosecution has waited atleast 20 days before announcing the decision of his release.

Top Pakistani diplomatic officials and a special representative of Pakistani Cricket Board have also been making extensive efforts to secure Asif’s release. A local firm of lawyers, Afridi and Angell, were engaged by the PCB to handle the case.

Fortunately for him, he gets off without any prison time. However, ICC might not be as forgiving. Let's see whether PCB also takes some disciplinary actions.

The ICC are more likely to intervene if the PCB let him go scot-free. So Asif can expect a ban of 6-12 months

I hope ICC intervenes and teach the Pakistan 'super star' a lesson this time.

Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai! - Charges Dropped - Returns to Pakistan on June

if no charges are filed, ICC cant do ****.

How does the matter fall in ICC jurisdiction?

ICC (and hence all member countries of ICC) is a signatory of WADA regulations (World Anti-doping Agency). Asif was not found in possession of hashish at or around an ICC event, so it will be interesting to see what happens now. Asif deserves a fine or something to ensure that such stupidity is not repeated in future because it only brings embarrassment to the country

But as per cricinfo http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/pakistan/content/current/story/355313.html
Dave Richardson, ICC’s acting chief executive, said that they had asked the PCB to keep them updated on the Asif issue. “As far as we know he has not been charged as yet,” Richardson said. “But since the ICC is a signatory of WADA regulations if he is charged then he is liable to penalties under WADA code of conduct.”

Since Asif has not been charged by Dubai authorities, ICC and WADA can probably do nothing now

(From Dawn)
Cricket: UAE to deport Pakistan paceman Asif
DUBAI, June 19 (AFP) - Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif will soon be deported from the United Arab Emirates after Dubai Public prosecutors dropped drug possession charges against him, an official said Thursday. The 25-year-old fast bowler was seized at Dubai airport on June 1 on charges of possessing an illegal drug while returning home from India after featuring in a domestic tournament. “The case has been dropped against Mohammad Asif due to insignificance … he will be deported as soon as the police finalize the procedures,” Mohammad Al Nuaimi, the public prosecutor who handled Asif’s case, said Thursday, according to the online version of the local daily Gulf News. “It is definite that he committed the crime of smuggling and possessing 0.24 grams of opium as he was caught red-handed … however in certain cases and for a faster litigation process the public prosecution drops a case due to insignificance and deports the suspect.” Pakistan’s diplomatic sources in the UAE told AFP that the paceman will return home at the first available flight. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) claimed they do not know about the proceedings.

He is a decent cricketer but not a superstar or legend yet. Senator Z A Chaudhary needs to get his head checked out

I think the fame has gotten into his head. PCB needs to teach him a lesson or two. They should investigate further and bring in the open what really happened. (or what he’s been :smokin:)

:D

Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai! - Charges Dropped - Returns to Pakistan on June

No illegal import was found from my custody and all of my medical tests had resulted negative in this connection, talking to media at Lahore airport he justified.
He said that I am grateful to Allah on getting back to homeland. The Chairman PCB Dr. Naseem Ashraf and Pakistan Embassy officials cooperated with me at their best.
