Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai!
According to Geo news, Asif was carrying charass. Sheesh! Is the dude, completely devoid of any brain cells? Does he realize that in middle eastern countries, they actually have capital punishment (death) for those carrying drugs?
Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai!

Asif held in Dubai

Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan fast bowler, has been held in Dubai on suspicion of possessing drugs. The fast bowler, who tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone, nearly two years ago, was held back by local authorities the day before yesterday though it is believed that they have not yet registered a case against him.
“Mohammad Asif has been held up since the day before yesterday in Dubai,” a senior PCB official told Cricinfo. “So far the authorities haven’t told us much but that it is on suspicion of possessing a contraband item.”
Though the board had not yet been fully notified, the official said it was believed Asif was caught with a drug, either opium or hashish. Local TV channels have been reporting it as the former. When asked whether the PCB had provided any legal help to Asif in Dubai, the official said only that the situation will be made clear at a press conference the board will hold on the situation this afternoon at 12.30pm (PST).
Asif, along with Shoaib Akhtar, tested positive in an internal dope test conducted by the Pakistan board in October 2006. He was initially banned for one year, though the ban was overturned on appeal a month later. Since then, one of the most promising fast bowlers on the world circuit has been dogged by a long-standing elbow problem. The injury had already taken the sheen away from a prodigious start to his international career and this new development is likely to do so even more.

Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai!
This is pathetic! On top of whatever punishment he gets from authorities in Dubai, he's sure to be penalized by PCB itself. Probably a ban for some period and a fine. IPL will likely take some action too (there goes his $650,000 contract with Delhi Daredevils)
This is a prime example of a fine, budding career going down the drain.
The Pakistan government may get involved and seek help from their sheikh friends and cover up the story.

It was a "misunderstanding" :)
Pakistan board eager for Asif to return

The Pakistan Cricket Board is hoping to bring Mohammad Asif back to Pakistan as soon as possible from Dubai where he is detained, though they admit they are still in the dark about the case.
Asif was detained by officials at the airport Sunday morning, according to Nadeem Akram, a senior PCB official, for possessing a contraband drug in his wallet. That sample has now been sent for tests and a meeting is underway between Asif’s lawyer and the public prosecutor.
“Asif was detained on Sunday,” Shafqat Naghmi, the board’s chief operating officer, said while addressing a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. “We don’t have all the details right now about why he was. Authorities in Dubai are still investigating. We do know that it was about something Asif had in his possession. But we stress that no charges have yet been laid against him.”
****Naghmi said the board was hoping the case was a mistake of some kind, but owing to the gravity of the situation, the Pakistan Embassy in Dubai had been alerted. **“We hope this has been some sort of mistake, but we have appointed legal counsel there from one of the best firms in Dubai. The embassy has also been contacted. Nadeem Akram has been there since that night. **We are just hoping that Asif gets back as soon as possible, hopefully in time for the Bangladesh tri-series.”
If Asif does get out of the situation, it is inconceivable that he will not face any disciplinary action from the Pakistan board, though Naghmi said that wasn’t the priority right now. “First we just want him to be back in Pakistan. Only after he gets back and the situation is clearer will we look at that possibility and see. Right now there is no charge-sheet against him.”
Speculation has predictably buzzed since the news broke, though Naghmi stressed that it was just that and nothing more. One local channel Express News claimed to have spoken to Asif, who said that he had been implicated after getting into a drunken brawl with security officers at the airport. This was denied to Cricinfo by Akram, as well as Naghmi during the press conference.
“This is all just speculation. We cannot hide stuff like this and remember there is no chargesheet yet. I have been told that what was found was some medicine given to him by a local Pakistani Hakeem.”

Even if something illegal was found with him it will be covered up as a mistake.](http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/pakistan/content/current/story/353456.html)
Are you kidding me? Absolutely unbelievable! How stupid are these cricketers? They say it is opium. If he is found guilty, all I can say is bye bye Asif. Another promising one gone by the wayside. But how come he wasn't caught at the indian airport first? maybe somebody put it in his bag.
Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai!
I don't think any sane person can carry a drug on him while travelling, very likely a trap, he might have refused fixing a match hence the result :o

If the joker is found guilty he may get punished but don't think it will end his career and feel he will get away with it this time also.
Why don't these jokers learn from their mistakes, he is lucky to be playing cricket after using banned drugs in the past.

May be its the work of Indian secret service.:D
Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai!
Contrary to what Cricinfo has been told or it’s reporting, apparently Asif was indeed arrested at the Dubai Airport and was not detained.
In another report not verified by media outlet, there was also mention of Asif having a spat with an official at Dubai airport while being drunk and then he was searched further and was found to be carrying opium.

Mohd. Asif arrested in Dubai on drugs charges

LAHORE, Pakistan - Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Asif has been arrested at Dubai airport on charges of possessing illegal drugs, cricket officials said on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Asif was seized while returning home from India after featuring in a domestic event which ended on Sunday, said the Pakistan Cricket Board officials.
‘Yes, we can confirm about Asif’s arrest. He was stopped at Dubai airport on charges of carrying opium and was supposed to be brought before the magistrate on Tuesday,’ the official said.
PCB human resources director Nadeem Akram said he was in Dubai and has also hired a lawyer to assist Asif.
‘I am in Dubai as part of the PCB’s efforts to get Asif cleared. As far as we know a contraband item was in his wallet which he himself did not know and it’s in a very small quantity,’ Akram told AFP by telephone.
‘He was detained at the airport and was interrogated. As far as we know no first incident report has been lodged as yet but police have conducted several tests on Asif including a urine test. A lawyer has also been hired,’ he said.
PCB spokesman Shafqat Nagmi told a news conference in the eastern city of Lahore that Asif claimed the substance involved was medicine.
‘The lawyer said Asif is in good spirits and he is looking forward to returning home. It is all based on some assumptions – he said he had some medicine and they don’t know about it,’ Nagmi said.
‘The UAE (United Arab Emirates) has strict procedures – they want to probe the matter to determine what the substance is. We are hopeful the entire issue is due to some misunderstanding.’
The arrest is just the latest controversy to hit Pakistan’s troubled cricket team over the last two years.
Asif was banned for one year after he tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in October 2006. Fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years on the same charge.
The bans were however lifted on appeal two months later. Akhtar meanwhile is appealing a lifetime ban imposed in April for repeated disciplinary problems.
Asif was named on Monday as one of five pacemen in a 16-man squad to take part in next week’s one-day tri-series in Bangladesh.
He has had recent problems with injury, undergoing an operation in Australia in December after an elbow problem recurred during the one-day series against South Africa two months earlier.
He missed Pakistan’s tour of India late last year before being ruled out of the five-match home series against Zimbabwe.
Speculation has predictably buzzed since the news broke, though Naghmi stressed that it was just that and nothing more. One local channel Express News claimed to have spoken to Asif, who said that he had been implicated after getting into a drunken brawl with security officers at the airport. This was denied to Cricinfo by Akram, as well as Naghmi during the press conference. .
You got to be kidding me. He went to airport drunk, and got in fight? LOL, geo Express News...
Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai!
I know a guy who's childhood friend and neighbor gave him a packet to take to US saying that it was mithai for his brother in law. This guy got caught in US and that mithai turned out to be heroin. It happened many many years ago. This guy went bonkers, lost his mind and the urge to live.
Who knows what really happened in Asif's case.
