It was sometimes an extension of a general store or a book store, although when I was 4-5 and was living in PIB colony, we had a dedicated store that was nothing but a library.
I started reading my Ferozsons novels over there.
Then in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, we had a Book and stationary store in Block 1. I read my Imran Series, Jasoosi Duniya, Mustansar Hussain Tarar, Nasim Hijazi and Shafiqur Rehman there.
Another book store in Block 3 just had english novels, so Harrold Robins :D, Sidney Sheldon and others, I got from there.
What was your experience? What books you read out of Mohallay ki Library.
Ishtiaq Ahmed, ibn-e-safi, A. Hameed, Ayoob khaawar, Series of Daastaan-e-Ameer Hamza and Tlism Hosh Ruba... All of these writters were read from either a small book shop that used to rent these books from 50 paisay to 2 rupees per day or from a person directly from his house in mohalla... for about the same price but for longer period.
I remember in the 60's virtually every area had their own little library full of all sorts of books. You could rent them for a day for around 25 paisas.
We had this bookstore outside the departmental store where my shopped for groceries. My sister and I would spend the entire time reading TinTins and Asterix comics there.
We could give it a twist and add that at the Mohaley ki Library where EB was at, he ran into Rajesh Khanna and had a fight over Sharmila Tagore during the shooting of Aradhana in which Sharmila wanted to star against EB, yes our own Ehsan bhai.
i remember it.....there used to be a stationery store in the local neighborhood market...there used to be a wall of shelves dedicated to books...and they used to rent it out for 2 rupees....
with the passage of time the number of dedicated shelves and the books decreased till they almost vanished....:(
i remember reading lots of ishtiaq ahmad books (the inspector jamshed series..)....and a few others too,don't recall now...:)

good community libraries are a blessing if the librarians are good and the books are up to date and scholarly.
i would love to make the best of all the good books that are in library, which i can make use of.
