Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Did you stop to think about the double standards involved in your stance?

Leave that aside. ICC has rules in place. It is simply following them.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

There is no connection. My deepest apologies for derailing the thread.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Not true. Repeatedly ICC allows discriminatory policies by one of its members. With no regard to rules. Can you then explain why it wont ask IPL to stop mixing politics with sports and allow Pak players? Why not a word from ICC on IPLs openly discriminatory policies, while a wristband has them tripping backwards to enforce the rule "dont mix politics with sports" - which i do like btw.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

are you talking about these rules

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

The silent protest that shook the world.

One of my all time favourite images. Yes, sports and politics shouldn’t mix, but when sportsmen stand up for a cause - it’s simply electrifying.

Majority of Americans were mighty offended by this gestures. They felt exposed and both men thoroughly demonised as well as their cause. I wonder how many people still oppose this gesture according to their ‘sports and politics should not mix’ theorem?

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Actually I don't.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Ok.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

It's happening in England. They should win at least 1 test match. I feel sorry after we in Australia completely whitewashed England in the ashes winning 5-0. The ashes are the biggest thing for England and having to lose against Australia, their lesser cousins, must have been completely humiliating for them.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

I am against exclusion of players from Pakistan in the IPL and have stated so before. ICC should step up on that issue

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

As an English citizen, to wear wristband for England’s veterans is NOT a political statement.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

I personally think Moeen should be allowed to wear the Gaza wristbands. People can wear what they want as long as it's not offensive to others. Just wanted to let you know that the pink SA was wearing was related to breast cancer charity funding and the red ribbons were related to funding for AIDS so it's not really political. Glenn McGrath's first wife died of breast cancer and he set up a charity and in Summer when the Australian cricket team plays at least one test match they wear pink. This allows sponsors to donate money for breast cancer. They also have some one day internationals where each 6 hit raises certain amount of money for breast cancer.

It would be nice to see the desi cricket teams doing something like that for a charity.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Teams from India and Pakistan have arranged a number of charity matches and have also played in a number iof them arranged by other people. I think the latest one was by afridi for raising money for IDP's from Waziristan.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Yeah me too. Don’t know why people assume that since people are Indians they support all that bcci does or all that Indian gov/institutions do. It can be a corrupt organisation at times.
Personally i’m not even that affected by India’s loss which was predicted by me. If we look from a human rights perspective and an issue raised by a mod here England should win. The issue of gay marriage was raised but am not sure any cricket player has worn bands for banning gay marriage. England legalised gay marriage in March and India criminalised gays in Dec last year. From a human rights point of view we shouldn’t mind England winning. Maybe even support it.
Did you know an English cricket player came out a while ago and he was supported by his cricket team mates?

South Africa wore pink for breast cancer.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

Ahh ok thanks Ehsan Uncle. Guess we don't really hear much about this type of stuff happening during an international cricket game.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

then How come a Muslim wearing a band for fellow Muslims suffering in Gaza become political? Just want to understand difference.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

I think people should wear what they want. A times of India article raised some good points on this.If other players can wear ‘Help for Heroes’, why ca’nt Moeen Ali wear ‘Save Gaza’? - The Economic Times

I think Southie’s opinion is that the “help for heroes” wristband is for a charity which raises money for British veterans and army. Help for Heroes - UK Military Charity It is not focusing on an event like Iraq/Afghanistan where british army are needlessly there. Ali’s wristband focuses on an event..rather than saying “Palestine Zindabad” or “Support Palestinans” or saying support towards a charity. Personally, i think there’s not much difference and it’s just a matter of semantics.

Not really sure how India is related to this. The English cricket board support Ali and it’s the ICC umpire who is having issues. India actually supported Pakistan in the UN resolution against Israel’s actions in Gaza. You know while many European countries like the UK abstained from voting. They could have done the weak thing and abstained especially considering the religious nature of who is in government but they didn’t. Publicly, Indian govs have supported Palestinian rights internationally but at the same time they maintain relations like other countries.

Re: Moeen Ali banned from wearing Gaza wristbands

There could be nothing more 'political' than English players wearing Help for Heroes band. Helping soldiers fighting arguably the most vehemently opposed and hated imperial invasions (Iraq and Afghanistan - and I'm talking domestically here)

If raising awareness for wounded *soldiers *is not political, then raising awareness to save massacred civilians is a genocidal conflict is not political either.

ECB should be appreciated for supporting Moeen and being consistent in their approach. As with ICC - screw them! The message has already been delivered and noted by millions across the world.

The article posted above covers this point well.
