on the same basis members get warnings and bans. the difference is warning/bans are temporary for the members, but for MODS it's one way ticket.

To answer seriously. Mods are picked based on what the site mgmt thinks they can bring to the team. It does not matter how many people they know, although having a good circle of friends on GS helps.
What this means usually is that TLK would see his team, his needs both short term and lionger term and try to bring in people who add more to the team as well as contribute to the forum.
In some cases he would discuss it with me and/or azkar/muzna and we will discuss pros and cons, in other cases he would tell us what he wants to do and to let him know if we have any strong reservations, which usually is not the case since he is good at what he does.
