that claim about "women being forced to participate" .. the women had to be threatened to get them to run?? from the general physical fitness of women in Pakistan, i had a feeling it'd come to this.

LAHORE, April 6: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has urged the government to abandon its plan to hold women’s marathons in various cities and issued a warning that supporters of the religious alliance will use force to stop any such race if the plan is not dropped.
MMA’s Secretary General Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday directed followers of the alliance across the country to act against what he called obscenity and vulgarity and stop such races.
The matter came under discussion at a meeting of MMA’s supreme council in Mansoora, and Maulana Fazl announced its decisions at a news conference at the Camp Jail where he had come, along with a number of other leaders, to visit detained leaders and workers of the alliance.
Qazi Husain Ahmed presided over the meeting after which he underwent heart surgery at a local hospital. Maulana Fazl said in an aggressive tone that religious parties would not allow the government to impose Western culture on Pakistan.
He claimed that even the family of the Punjab chief minister would support the MMA’s point of view on the issue of marathon races. Professor Sajid Mir, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Liaquat Baloch, Riaz Durrani and Pir Ijaz Hashmi were present at the news conference.
Maulana Fazl also demanded restoration of the 1973 Constitution, an independent foreign policy, legislation in accordance with the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology, steps in the budget to control prices and unemployment and measures to eradicate vulgarity.
He said the alliance would continue its struggle for fulfilment of the demands. The MMA leader said the alliance would observe Friday (April 8) as a day of protests against the marathon. The day, he said, would also be observed to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.
He thanked traders, businessmen and transporters for their positive response to MMA’s April 2 strike call. He said a successful strike and people’s participation in large numbers in the ‘million marches’ had demonstrated the nation’s confidence in the alliance.
He demanded the release of all detained leaders and activists of the MMA by April 15, and said if the demand was not met, the alliance would hold a procession from Gujranwala to Lahore on April 16.
Maulana Fazl dismissed a point that MMA’s rally would adversely affect the PPP’s programme to accord a warm welcome to its leader Asif Ali Zardari who is schedule to land in Lahore on that day. “They have their programmes and we have ours,” he said. He said more marches would be organized in April and May and a schedule would be announced soon.

I think DAWN is a corrupt news paper. MMA does not disrupt races ... it is police who lathi charges them and so they in turn go physical. Otherwise they are very peace loving people.

I think the MMA would disrupt anything that doesn't fit into their narrow minded "incorrect" interpretation of Islam. I have many Afghani friends here who came during the time of the Taliban, and it almost brings me to tears that anyone would want to impose that on Pakistan. Security and decrease in drug traffiking is no justification for destroying a culture and society.

Pakistan ka culture agar app ko pata nahi hain to soono…Pakistan ka culture Islam say shoru howa or khatam hi hoga. These very Mullahs created Pakistan and these very Mullahs will end it. In the mean time you should pack your bags and move to India, you be safe.

You know gay1, your loyalty to Maudoodi and the Jamaat are admirable. Like your mentor (Maudoodi) you too carry the torch of hatred for whatever Jinnah achieved. Difference between Maudoodi and the likes of you is that he was a man enough to accept his mistake and accept Pakistan for what it is, found by a secular, honest, fair minded shrewd politician called M.A. Jinnah.
My recommendation to you is go read Indo-Pak history books written by real historians not the jamaat propaganda you are so used to reading…if you cannot afford to buy these books then we can start a charity drive for you, just let us know cause we are the same Pakis who welcomed Maudoodi even though he bitterly opposed Paksitan and colluded with congress…

what else does it take for a leader to be 'great' if his being titled 'Quaid-e-Azam' by millions of supporters and being able to create a new country against all odds isn't enough...?
and what could have Jinnah done for the 'Indian Muslims'? he made Pakistan for Muslims and they chose to stay in Hindustan, whose fault...?

I wonder, how many homes and tents ur great great leader Jinnah had ordered for migrating Muslim Indians? He was clever enough to incite Indian muslims to supoort muslim League, but when it came to supporting those, he showed them his back. It is historical fact.

That’s highly doubtful. It’s true that Shias are killed in Pakistan for thier religion, but the phenomeon is more recent and never have 2,000 people of any religion been killed in Pakistan in a single day.
Now if you have some stats of Muslims in Pakistan vs. Muslims in India killed, I would like to see them.
