Pakistani police have clashed with demonstrators protesting against the participation of women in a 10km road race in eastern Pakistan.
A police chief in Gujranwala, 200km (120 miles) southeast of the capital, Islamabad, said 10 people were hurt.
Protestors opened fire on the police near a stadium where the race was due to end, while the police fired into the air to disperse the attackers.
The group that called for the protest said police fired without provocation.
‘Undress the nation’
The clashes erupted after supporters of the Islamic religious parties alliance (MMA) attacked the men and women contesting the race with batons and stones, police said.
The protesters blocked the race course and chased competitors away as they approached the sports stadium where they were expected to finish race.
A spokesman for the MMA told the Associated Press news agency that the alliance had warned organisers against holding the race “because it is against Islam”.
“They want to undress the entire nation,” Riaz Durrani said.
“It is indecent for women to run in the streets. They want the sisters and sisters-in-law of the nation to wear knickers and T-shirts.”
Two months ago Islamic groups strongly criticised a race in Lahore, saying the female participants had violated Muslim dress code.
well, everytime we see the news clipping showing scores of MMA faithfuls putting automobiles on fire and rioting on either ARY or GEO, we feel really bad about those poor girls and sorry for these goons. Now, these women were properly dressed unlike that marathon that took place last month in Lahore where participants from other countries wore shorts and mind you that too was severely criticised by MMA.
I wonder what these people want. This is just pathetic!

A Bill further to amend the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan:
AND WHEREAS Islam enjoins the establishment of a social order based on Islamic values, of prescribing what is right and forbidding what is wrong (amr bil ma'roof wa nahi anil munkar);
The people who disrupted the race are doing what they think is 'right' .. it is their understanding of Islam that the above mentioned rule for Muslims gives them the right to be above to law to stop an 'evil' or 'indecency' as they see fit, otherwise they will be cowards. You can visit Islamic websites and you will see that 'nahi anil munkar' is used to justify every action from flogging women in the streets and over through perceived illegitimate governments to punishing those who shave their beards.
As long as the basic understanding of this principle will not change, one cannot stop incidents like this to happen.

Past two days I have been seeing this topic become a matter of hot debate on GS and have been trying to gather info…coz I simply couldn’t believe that MMA would just go ballistic and attack a grouup of female atheletes…After all, you see females walknig/jogging/running in pakistani/western attire in all major cities of the country…privately, in parks, in colleges, and what not…
Did any of us even care to find out the truth before jumping our guns and labelling MMA as bad and evil and barbaric…?

MMA supporters were gathered to peacefully protest
Police opened lathi charge on MMA first
MMA retaliated
The people who suffered gunshot wounds were MMA workers, not the police
The females who were gathered there, many of them had been forced without their ready willingness to participate in that event and that was the very reason MMA was protesting…
Its highly interesting to note how our shameless puppet government let biased reports leak to western media and how everyone made a hoopla and dissed MMA without even getting to the bottom of the facts Our government is the one to blame here, NOT MMA.

so you don’t even think twice to immediately reject all the dozens of reports for 2 days that have all said the same thing, then you hear this guy say MMA didnt do anything bad and immediately believe that these are the “facts” and all other reports are leaked biased reports? so the REAL STORY was that the MMA was actually defending the honor of women who had been forced to race against their will? lol…does that sound believeable to you? that’s ridiculous.

What group of protesters in the world is ever going to release a press statement saying, yeah, we carried illegal weapons along on our protest and attacked the police?
Why dont we have a race between the politicians and whoever wins can be the prime minister? I am sure the MMA Halwa Eating Matooz will do very well, with their bellies hanging out. Imran Khan used to run all day too.
In comparison to the emotional mob the credibility of Pakistani Police is too low even to be considered. Eight hours or so that they spend on ‘duty’ is to fleece money off the people on any pretext. I would rather trust the statement of protestors than that of the corrupt to the core police.
Police did not organize the marathon, right? They were there just to provide security and make sure no group takes law into their hands. MMA had no business showing up with sticks and petrol bombs (if they did). They had no business to stop the race either. They can make their point by a peaceful protest out of the way, or file a court case to have the race stopped. If they had done either of these things, there is no reason for anyone to attack them. Haan, if they forcibly try to stop the race or attack the police forces, then they are fair game.
Attacking the security forces under any pretext is wrong. Anyone who does it should be dealt with severely. Attacking race participants just because they don't agree with your narrow views is even more shameful. Tomorrow, if MMA comes into government, they will rely on these same police forces to enforce the law of the land.
That’s a very good idea. Why not make it even more interesting by making all these ‘politicians’ carry all that money that they have looted from the national treasury or banks on their heads while in the race.
I am sure the MMA Halwa Eating Matooz will do very well; all they have to do is to walk at a leisurely pace and even have a break half way into the race to have one more plate of halwa and still win the race.
The non-Matooz politicians will be still trying to get out of the pile of ill-gotten loot.
Our government is the one to blame here, NOT MMA.
