Pakistan are likely to announce a captain for the World Cup within the next few days, possibly even before the fourth ODI of the current series against New Zealand scheduled for February 1. Indications, for the moment, lean towards the Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq taking over from Shahid Afridi, the current ODI skipper, for cricket’s showpiece event. But the situation remains fluid and Misbah’s chances were far greater a few days ago; a comfortable win over New Zealand on Saturday, with a starring role from Afridi, will no doubt impact on the final decision.

The PCB announced a 15-man World Cup squad earlier this month, but much to the surprise of almost everyone, didn’t name a skipper for the event.** Afridi has been Pakistan’s ODI captain over the last year but just before the New Zealand tour began, a number of key players and team management officials raised concerns with the board over his captaincy**. The development placed the board in a quandary, between players and the captain, ultimately compelling them to delay the announcement.

Expectedly the decision has been slammed by a number of ex-players, most notably Inzamam-ul-Haq; the broad feeling of discontent doesn’t revolve around the personalities as much as the instability inherent in such a situation.** The board and the chairman Ijaz Butt, it is believed, have no real issue with Afridi remaining captain, but such are the nature of the concerns the players and team management have, that the board has found itself having to choose sides. **

It is understood that players are mostly unhappy with Afridi’s regular and very public assessments of his side’s performances, mostly when they have been critical. In addition, Afridi’s statements to the ICC with reference to the spot-fixing case involving three Pakistani players have also been felt by some players in the current squad to have been incendiary and unnecessary. Though local reports suggested that a group of senior players had thrown their support behind Afridi, players such as Kamran Akmal and Misbah still hold reservations.
The inability of Afridi and vital members of the team management to gel with each other has not helped matters; one important management official is thought to have pushed particularly forcefully for Misbah’s elevation to the captaincy over the last few weeks in New Zealand.
The delay has allowed the board chairman to travel to New Zealand to hold discussions with Afridi, senior players and management officials before making a decision. In a meeting before the team departed Butt also advised Afridi to try and improve his interaction with players over the course of the series.
These meetings will ultimately decide who is to be appointed.
On paper, Afridi’s record as captain is not hugely impressive, with seven wins and 10 losses in 18 games (and one no-result). He averages nearly 36 with the bat in that time, including two hundreds in Sri Lanka, and well over his career numbers. And though the 25-ball 65 against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday was his first fifty in 12 ODIs, he has, on five occasions, made scores between 24-49, which given the way Afridi bats and the position he bats at, are often vital hands.
His bowling has not been as incisive, taking only 17 wickets in that span and generally going for runs. But in pushing ODI series against England and South Africa to the final game each time, in overseeing several fightbacks in tough circumstances Afridi would seem to have built up some credit.
Misbah’s case for captaincy, on paper, is weaker. He has not been part of the ODI set-up for much of the last year; in fact, he only played two ODIs in 2010 and was dropped midway through the series against South Africa. His often poor strike-rate also works against him, and if Younis Khan is in the playing XI, robs Pakistan of some power in the middle. But he has built up momentum from his Test exploits, where he has been in exceptional form with the bat and has just led Pakistan to a drought-breaking Test series win.

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Afridi proved it today that no one can lead the team better then him in ODI :jhanda:

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

What about the first ODI?

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

No one can perform in every match :jhanda:

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

One in 10 matches would be good.

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

He lead from the front too and that matters too :jhanda:

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Let him lead from the front in the next three matches before I get convinced.

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Misbah is not even an ODI player in my books !

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

hahahah Waleed out of control!!

great knock by afridi today but dont make the same mistake over and over again of bigging him up after 1 knock..forgetting the 10 bad ones that happen for every 1 good knock....

misbah might just be a better option..no matter how much i dislike afridi i feel its too late now to be switching captains.. less than a month away from the WC... will cause more drama and tension in the team..

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

LOL

u wont miss any chance to bash Afridi...........BTW tell me any innings Dhoni played even in last 10 matches ...so should india remove him from captaincy too lol

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

waleed.. yes dhoni has not playing any good ODI innings since last summer I think..

it's not just about the LAST 10 innings.. I was talking about a pattern in general.. that has went on for YEARS and YEARS..

dhoni has not been performing like this for years... he's been an awesome finisher for india in ODIs...adapting his game to the situation...and getting india home.. done that soooooooooo many times... his average is still almost 50 with a 85+ SR..

this is completely opposite to afridi.. who plays rash shots and throws the game away.. on so many occasions... does not adapt to the situation most of the times.. and worse.. does not even TRY to adapt..... his average is less than 25.

there is no comparison mere bhai.... dhoni's avg is more than TWICE afridi's..

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Yeah there is no comparison ......Afridi is a match winner on his day like he did today ......why u forget he is a bowling all rounder ..he got 300 wickets too ....

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Misbah is not an ODI player. cant rotate the strike, cant hit shots. He'll hole up one end (if he benefits from missed stumping chances) and if hes lucky people will think his 35 runs with a strike rate of under 50 for most of the innings was a useful contribution.

And its great to see Akmal's name popping up as one of the power centers unhappy with Afridi. This man is teflon.

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

waleed... yea he is a pretty good ODI / T20 bowler.. no doubt.. i was only referring to his batting which is usually what all his fan boys get erections for...

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Which akmal ur talking about …no body is against Afridi in the team …u can judge it When Afridi scored 50 and all team mates appreciated it :jhanda:

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Please keep Akmal Bros out of captancy race.........they are not captancy material.............

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Darmiyana Akmal… i.e. Kamran Akmal. Its in the article.

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Ravage I take your point about Misbah not being very good at rotating the strike but remember this is ODI not T20. You do need someone like Younis or Misbah (perhaps not both, Perhaps Asad should replace Younis who is clearly struggling for form) who can steady the ship in the middle overs, a consolidator

Without Hafeez and Misbah's hard work and solid partnership in the middle period, Afridi and Umar would not have been able to attack or hit out as they did period. Afridi is not someone who can take the side from 100/5 to even 250. keep things in perspective

Once that solid platform was built by the top and middle order batsmen, Umar and Afridi had a clear licence to hit out

We do need someone like Younis or Misbah in the middle overs. One of the two Misbah or Younis + Yousuf would have been ideal for that role. I am not convinced that Asad is better than Younis but he should perhaps be given a chance in the next game

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

Im sorry but this is completely incorrect. Do you think, these specifics aside, if someone told you that a batsman scored at less than 50% strike rate in an ODI, was unable to rotate the strike, got one life and then got out at 35 you would consider that an acceptable performance for a specialist batsman? That it didnt damage the innings is our good fortune. That hafeez didnt come under pressure because Misbah was giving fielding practice to the Kiwies is to his credit not to Misbah's. If Afridi's innings hadnt happened and Pakistan had ended around 220 with Kiwies chasing that down easily do you think you would have thought Misbah's strategy was great? Do you want him to repeat this playing style everytime?

Do you even have any evidence to suggest that he could have chosen to rotate the strike, take singles and hit boundaries, but he decided not to because he was reading the match situation, and therefore chose to hit the ball repeatedly to fielders as a way of building the platform? If not, do you think this playing style works in all situations?

Re: Misbah, Afridi in ODI captaincy race

agreed with asif... misbah and younis both are required in the middle...
