Sinner, its like saying why are you a punjabi/sindhi/balochi when you can just be Pakistani ? or why be a sunni and not a Muslim ? Punjabi is Pakistani first and because he has different culture/language/heritage than sindhi/balochi, he is Punjabi. Sunnis are Muslims , but because they do not agree with Ismailis,sufi Islam,shias, they are sunnis. It is to differentiate yourself from other school of thought yet , admitting yourself as well as others as Muslims as well.
Same is the case with Ahmadis. Ahmadis would have never been Ahmadis if they were not the followers of Islam. They declare openly that they are Muslims. They are Muslims first and because they do not agree with certain points with other Muslims like sunnis or shias for example, to differentiate their opinions from them, they call themselves Ahmadi Muslims. To non-muslims, Ahmadis are Muslims.. just like how to Americans Punjabi/sindhi/balochi are Pakistanis.
