Mirasi vs Kanjar

Whichis more derogative? what is the difference? which is more offensive? Is it punjabi or urdu?
Lets hear it from all pro-kunjars and anti mirasi’s and vice versa.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

kanjar seems more derogative and offensive. mirasi is not really a swear, is it?

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

Kanjar is offensive. Mirasi is more 'down-putting' used for dissing people, if thats the right way to describe it.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

what do they mean?

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

they are very very naughty words Lady daisy, too naughty for a southerner like you.

Marasi means singer, its only considered a curse as back in the days before Junoon and Ali Zafar, singing was considered a lower class profession. I dont understand either, but if you apply it to the spice girls, it makes much sense. Its not a curse word though, its punjabi.

Kanjar...erm i think means pimp, but im not so sure, i get very confused with punjabi curse words...i only curse in english as english curses don't count.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

kangri is a hoe so kanjar is a pimp. Marassi is a low class individual.

Id rather be called a hoe than a tramp (maraasi)

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

Aha, thank you ladies.... I shall now add them to my theraurus.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

hahaha @ hics :p

i used to think marasi meant tramp when i was younger, but it just means someone who sings professionally.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

That's funny. I always though a Mirasi was a dark-skinned servant.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

Mirasi and Kanjar may be used as derogative and offensive words, but they are still a part of our society and must be respected. :)
Read and Decide. It all comes from our old system and must be left apart as we say ourselves Muslims.
Mirasi bradri is usually associated with arts. They were relying on entertainment to earn their living. They performed as singers, actors, musicians…In the era when there were enough rajas to support them, some of them were amongst the elite. It is said that a Mirasi will die with hunger but will never sell his art to entertain people who cannot understand and appreciate it.
Kanjar bradri is associated with arts too but they make heavy use of women, like in dances or singing. Even in the past and as of a recent research kanjar families are dominated by women, i.e. women are in control. Kanjars are associated with prostitution too, but it is not what they are relying on. When empires and rajas were found, many kanjar families were a part of elite too. Even some of their women are associated with rajas too.
Kanjars and Mirasis do exist all together in many cases to support each other.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

that’s madrasi..pcg.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

they are both cool words…kanjars are more esteemed than mirasis i am afraid…waisai r u sure u didnt know that already?..

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

Both are looked down upon in our society firstly because the work they are doing is frowned upon and secondly due to their low social status because professionals such as musicians or even hairdressers and chefs for that matter are considered menial labourers as opposed to landlord families.

Kanjar is definitely worse, as well as being classical singers and musicians they are also pimps and sell their women (Kanjri) to do prostitution and classical vulgar dances (Mujra) for men’s entertainment.

Meraasi on the other hand are musicians and singers but their women are not usually involved in prostitution or dancing. These are they types we get back home to sing and play music at weddings.

I look down on both but not because of their social status or lack of property but rather because of their profession.

For a lot of people it’s like a caste and anyone born into that is stuck with it but I think that’s wrong, there is no high or low caste all are created equal, I look down on their profession but if somebody from a Kanjar/Meraasi family gives up that work then I respect him and no longer consider him that, same way if some person from a big respectable household were to take up this low profession then I would consider them Kanjar/Meraasi regardless of how respected a tribe they come from.

Respectable family orientated people still look down upon this profession, even upon stars such as Meera, Reema, Ali Haider, Junoon etc.

Using them as a means of entertainment and enjoyment is one thing, respecting them another.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

That’s what people belonging to such families want us to think.

Musicians, dancers and singers may have been employed by the kings of old, even paid lavishly and kept in luxury but they were never respected or considered part of the elite themselves, the entertainment they provided may have been appreciated but not respected as such. Take the example of Shehzada Saleem wanting to marry Anaarkali, did Shahenshah Akbar allow it? No because she was a dancer.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

words of wisdom…definelty.

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

Here is an example that will clear up everything.

Mirasi = Madhanee
Kanjar = Roman

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar

These two words are very confusing and hard to understand.

Is there an Urdu dictionary online that I could refer to?

Re: Mirasi vs Kanjar
