Midwife vs. Obstetrician

Hello everyone,

I’m about 6 weeks along and I still can’t decide between a midwife and an OBGYN. Because we had fertility issues I’m going to be having my first ultrasound at my RE’s office in a few days and if everything looks good the RE will no longer be responsible for me and I wil have to make a decision about my health care provider during my pregnancy.

I live in Ontario, Canada so midwives are covered by insurance and registered with the ministry of Health, and go through a min of four years of university…I have no doubt that they will be qualified to take care of me… and even with a midwife I would still deliver at the hospital

Here are a few of my concerns and questions

  • both hospitals near my house have group practice oby’s so I could not be guranteed to have a female doctor deliver my baby (I would prefer female)

  • With an OB I assume they’d be in and out of the room until the pushing part as with a midwife, she would be there the whole time

  • what if I tear - can the midwife do my stiches

  • I know that most midwives encourage a holistic natural approach so will they be supportive if I want an epidural.

Does anyone have any experience with Trillium / Credit Valley in Mississauga either with an OB or midwife ?

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

I've had great experience with midwives. They are trained to do all what an ob usually does at the time of delivery. In case of complications, an ob is always available to take over the case so you need not worry.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

All OBs are quacks.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

I had my little one at Credit Valley and I was in the room to help my sister with both of her deliveries at the very same hospital.

I can't say that I was displeased with any of the experiences. (My husband would tell you that the attending OB at my delivery was useless cuz she forced me to continue labouring when she should have called a C-section long before. Noor was 9.5 lbs and there was no way that she was coming naturally.)

Neither of us used midwives......but I have heard that they are just as capable and as long as you deliver in the hospital the OB is there in case there are complications.

If you go with Credit Valley then read up on the doctors in the practice there.....there are a couple that have a really nasty bedside manner. (e.g. Dr. Gurland) Btw...Dr. Kanee is amazing! And you are right about not necessarily getting your pick of a female.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

I think I'm leaning towards a midwife... also right now I would be considered low-risk but if I become high risk would I have to transfer to an OB ?

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

I prefer midwives, so far its been good with them. call me a typcial desi, but most OB are men and im more comfy with midwivewho happen to be mostly women.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

I delivered with a midwife and was extremely happy with her support. Things might be different in the US but my midwife didnt stay in the room the whole time. She however checked up on me frequently and was extremely supportive. However in case of an emergency i could have ended up with any OB, male or female, whoever was on call. I had a 3rd degree tear and an OB was needed to stitch me up and luckily a female one was on call. I am sure OBs are awesome providers but i had better experience with the midwives than i had with the OB i went to.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

Congratulations, Ramsha! So happy for you!

Thanks Sahar - I still can't believe it

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

Don't you have an all women OB practice there? Ask around, you might find one.
I'm enrolled with an all women OB practice right now.

My first born was delivered by a midwife since she was on call that night and my OB was on vacation (that practice had 4 female OBs and 2 midwives).... she was fine with me getting an epidural and came to my room only at the delivery time (no popping in and out and no staying with me). I believe the ones who stay with you throughout are called Doulas and have to be hired privately..... but that might be the practice in US and not in Canada.

I would say set up appointments, interview them, ask them these questions.... then decide who to go with. Since we can do that in US, I'm sure they must be open to interviewing in Canada also. Please let me know if I'm wrong, I would like to increase my general knowledge :)

Nik baaji, when did you become such a 'shikaaiti tattoo'?

Yes, I forgot, congratulations Ramsha, is this gonna be your first?

How do I get a job as a midhusband?

You'd be surprised at how very few practices are all female. At begum's practice, there are SO MANY patients transferring to her from the male OBs, it's insane, it's gotta hurt the guys' feelings.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

MashaAllah we're lucky in VA then.... lots of all-women group practices here, I found 4 around the hospital where I want to deliver.

And congratulations Ramsha... stupid me, forgot to say that in my earlier post :)

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

aahmed - yes after over a year of trying so we're really cautiously excited right now.

MIAinVA - thanks - and yes you are lucky, most of the practices around me are mixed.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

Congrats Ramsha......may Allah keep you and your expected baby in His care forever.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

congratulations, Ramsha!!! i’m so happy for you!!

several friends have used midwives and have nothing but good things to say. their midwives were at their side from the day they signed up, and through out labour and delivery too. they’re on call 24 hours for you, i believe. also keep in mind that they follow up with you at home daily for up to 6 weeks to make sure you’re doing well which is a HUGE bonus! and yes, if God forbid, you are high risk or are having multiples, a mid wife will not take you on, but AH since you’re low risk right now, there shouldn’t be an issue. the only thing i would suggest is getting in touch with one ASAP as they are in high demand and there can be waiting lists. the one i spoke to in my preliminary research suggested i call them as soon as the stick showed a positive! perhaps to get more information too, it would be best to speak to a midwife herself?

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

Thanks SGC - I went in for my 6 week ultrosound today and was told I was good to go and have been released by my RE.

I've decided to go with a midwife.

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

congratulations Ramsha…so happy for you!! prayers for you and your baby

ramsha...i also had my first delivered by the midwives of mississauga area..in trillium.

dont worry...the doctors are always on call if they need extra intervention, but a midwife will give you a epidural if you request one...they dont force anything and are very very nice women! and yes they stay with you the whole while so thats very nice. I moved to another city for my second and was unable to get a midwife...nurses ended up doing most of the work and my doctor couldnt even make it to the delivery!!! I had res students deliver my baby!

yes they do the stiches if you tear, dont worry.

if you become high risk , they immediately transfer you to an obgyn that they work with...so no worries abt that either!!!

Re: Midwife vs. Obstetrician

Hi ladies,

I live in Ontario and was interested in looking into midwifery. Has anyone used a midwife recently? Also I am at 11 weeks now. Is it too late to look for a midwife (I’ve read this in some places online). I left messages this morning to my nearnest midwifery practices, now just waiting for a call back!
