He is a cult type personality & has many followers. His org is called Minhaj-ul-Quran that he runs from Canada & collects lot of chanda. Many people in my family are his is fans (he was visiting USA last year & what I saw was unbelievable).

He has his flaws but he is a well learned islamic scholar. Even some of my deobandis acquaintances accept this fact.
Islamabad episode aside, it is sometimes hard to figure out what is fact and fiction with sectarian blinders people have on these days. I am still trying to figure out how sheikh rasheed is worse than zardari, altaf or han ji be my girl frand kim barker gunja shareef.
I know people in my family who give reverence to tariq jameel,** but he (and junaid jamshed) cracked me up on how they straightened out Amir Khan's (bollywood actor) imaan because the chap was "diplomatic" and gave them time during umra or hajj. I was like seriously !? he is still the same... **:D
There is nothing wrong with aiming at bringing such people in religious circle. Tariq Jameel made several calls to Amir khan but there should be some limit on negotiation to keep the stature of scholar. He once requested Tariq Jameel to pray for the success of his incoming movie but response of Tariq Jameel to the request was a poor attempt.

PCG may be pleased to know that he's one of the very religious figures who's given a thesis like fatwa against terrorism, and probably the only mainstream religious figure who's made profound efforts to build a bridge between Sunnis and Shias. For that reason alone, I'd take him over 'chapter number four, verse number three, line number two, page number 60'. He's definitely an invited guest in Pakistani politics, but his ideologies nor opinions are malicious.
