My parents are in talks with a family for my rishta, they’ll be coming over to ours for dinner for the first time on Sunday (they’ve been for tea before), and we don’t know what to cook. We have no idea what kind of food they like, and my mum whilst making an effort doesn’t want to go all out, so that they don’t come to expect loads everytime they come over (she’s disabled - so can’t guarantee a fantastic meal with a number of different dishes each time.
What do you suggest we make? What did you cook the first time your in-laws came over?
hmmm firstly, in our family we NEVER let these rishtay wale ppl to have dinner at our place... only when the rishta is final can we think of doin. so i dun really understand why u are invitin them for dinner. but anyway, make 3 dishes, atleast one meat biryani, one vegetable dish and one daal. the only reason i put veg and daal there is cus u dun wanna spoil them. r they gonna continue to come after this too, even if u reject the rishta..
-confused-
Because it is pretty much final, this is where we ask them to propose officially in writing and arrange a time for engagement - so yes they will be coming over to ours after.

hahahhahahhaha are they going to send a letter saying dear sir / madam
further to our conversation earlier we now confirm that we would like to propose to your daughter
sorry but i found that quite funny
also if the rishta is pretty much pakka then have a few dishes such as one rice one salan , naan , salad and perhaps roast or shami kebab and then a sweetdish
it doesnt need to be soo extravagant , its not the wedding yet
tigerlily, that sounds like a wonderful tradition!
I would probably keep it simple with one rice dish (pulao/biryani), one meat salan and one veggie salan, salad and raita, since your mom cannot do an elaborate feast all the time.
neither have i heard of this before. but just my opinion, its sounds a bit weird to me.... i means its gud for securing the gals future but it sounds like its a business deal or somethin.. but thaz just my opinion. peace!
Thanks for the input but we'll need to do both daal and veg as my uncle who will also be there is vegetarian.
But what about dessert guys?
mall I guess it does seem like a business deal, and the first I heard of this was the other night, but I can see the wisdom in it, I guess in olden times it replaced the engagement with a ring - now its in addition to it.
first of all congrats:)..may this relation bring happiness to both the families...i didnt know about this tradition...but do let me know in detail what was written?
about the menu...u must make something urself..
Kebabs
Biryani or Pulao of chicken or meat OR Mattar Pulao
Chicken curry OR Alu Gosht..i find alu gosht easy to make...
Daal....i have a very ncie recipe of fry chana daal..if u want i can give u..
Veg..make mix veggies like alu mattar gajjur OR alu pallak...
Raita...
Chutney
Salad
Naan
Dessert....for this u can offer ready-made ice cream OR gajjar ka halwa if its winter at ur end...or fruit trifle or firni very easy option...if i would be near to u i wud have brought something myself just to share the load:)
Aww thanks uetian, I'll be doing all the cooking myself, so that's not a problem.
Yes please send your daal recipe, I may not do it for Sunday, but will definatley try it out :)
They served trifle to my parents when they went over, and we served my uncle and aunt firni when they came over yesterday - I don't think they'll want to eat firni twice in one week. My friend has however suggested mango crumble, which sounds yummy.
Sounds like you have a great menu planned out. I do think you need an appetizer though. Some people have mentioned shami kebab. Samosas are yummy too, and everyone likes them!
For desert, have you considered something with fresh fruits? Would a simple platter seem too basic? How about a custard? Here’s an easy recipe Fruit Custard Recipe Video | ifood.tv And everyone loves fresh fruit, especially when its already cut up.
You must be so excited about the rishta! Congrats! You will be cooking for your husband to be! Is there something you know your fiance likes? Any way to find out (Asking a mutual friend or stalking his Facebook profile)? I would suggest that you cook something that you’re very good at. Let your in-laws and husband to know that this is your speciality, so that they can look forward to your treating them in the future.
Good luck! Take pictures and let us know how it goes.
And hey, forget about the food - what are you wearing?!
Yes I think you're right about the appetizers, we already have samosas made in the freezer, so should be quick to fry them up. And the furit custard looks good too...the choices!
To be honest I'm not excited yet, more anxious as I have so much to do both at work and at home before Sunday. But I'm sure the excitement will set in on Sunday once everything's ready :)
Well from previous conversations I know he doesn't have a sweet tooth at all, so perhaps fruit would be the best option. He also likes quite spicy food. Yep I'll be sure to do things I've done before. Tandoori chicken is a specialty, as is the biryani.
Though whilst typing this I have remembered him mentioning butter chicken, so I guess I'll cook that :) Everyone else in my family seems to like it, so it should be fine.
OMG clothes...I hadn't even thought of that! No idea :s I guess I'll keep it simple, I don't want to look too dressed up, or feel uncomfortable.
I do have a nice pink silk shalwar kameez, with a delicate paisly print, so maybe that?
well tigerlil dont forget to make 2 types of salads..like one should be russian salad and the other should be regular garden salad with or without chicken depends on you:) !
for desserts....there r so many options...
1-put fresh fruit alongwith crushed chocolate in fresh cream..it tastes awesome..
2-bhooni hui saviyyan...takes very less time to cook...
3-cheese cake bna lo...u can make this in advance...
4-creme caramel...i think ira ki buhut achi recipe hai using half and half..
