Is it ok for women to break fast if they get periods in the middle of the fast? If not, what about when they are getting cramps and headaches and will require medication?
Re: Fasting and Periods?
Normally medication is allowed in life threatening situations, but "cramps" and "headaches" are not considered life threatening.
Re: Fasting and Periods?
ur fast ends when ur periods starts, so its okay to take required medications n stuff n eat.
Re: Fasting and Periods?
Thanks Saruuu. Only if guys had periods they would know how it feels like during cramps:rolleyes:
Re: Fasting and Periods?
if they are really “life” threatening then of course you can take medications, but I’ve seen women having cramps live without medication, I understand it is very painful though.
Re: Fasting and Periods?
does the same apply to being bitchy during periods? does god forgive our bitchiness during those "womanly" days?
Menses and restrictions on women
2:222. People ask you about menstruation. Say that it is an inconvenient distress for women; so approach your wives for the private relation only when they are clear past this period. This is the Ordnance of Allah.
Is there anything else in the Quran that prohibits women from fasting, praying during menses?
Re: Menses and restrictions on women
There is a difference between prohibiting women from praying/fasting/etc, and allowing women to take a vacation from praying/fasting/etc.
It would be best to look at the hadith literature and see how the hadith's are worded.
No, there is technically no prohibition. From what I've read before, its an allowance. Once, when I talked to a classmate about it, she made the point that if God is doing you a favor, why would you not take it?
You go have a period and then try having to fast and pray, etc etc when you're keeling over with bloating and cramps.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women
hmmm... and where is this allowance made? I know that sick are excused and may be this state is considered sickness for women and that's how one may be exempt. But why can't you pray? You don't have to bend. Just sit on a chair and pray.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women
It's not about kneeling. Its about a state of uncleanliness.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women
While a woman is menstrating she is not considered 'paak' and in order to pray wudhoo must be performed which is not possible while menstrating as there is constant bleeding.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women
Exactly. Wudu isn’t complete if a woman is on her period.
Read Sahih Al-Bukhari, it’s got quite a few hadith on menses/cleanliness for women/etc.
*Volume 1, Book 4, Number 228: *Narrated 'Aisha: Fatima bint Abi Hubaish came to the Prophet and said, “O Allah’s Apostle I get persistent bleeding from the uterus and do not become clean. Shall I give up my prayers?” Allah’s Apostle replied, “No, because it is from a blood vessel and not the menses. So when your real menses begins give up your prayers and when it has finished wash off the blood (take a bath) and offer your prayers.” Hisham (the sub narrator) narrated that his father had also said, (the Prophet told her): “Perform ablution for every prayer till the time of the next period comes.”

Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
I think there are many more hadith's centered on menses and what you should/should not do and what you are exempted from.
If it was haraam, you'd see an ayah in the Quran. Since there is no ayah that says women are forbidden from fasting/praying during menses, then you can assume its just an exemption that women are allowed to take up.
As for why can't they sit and pray: If you had a period like ever in your life, you would know how painful it can be for some ladies. Its just a measure to help women relax during this time period. That's all. And they are not unclean when they have their menses, and even the posted hadith does not say that the reason is uncleanliness. There are loads of hadith that talk about how a woman is not "impure" or "unclean" when she has her period.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
suroor i think that is wrong.
if u have periods after midday then u can fast till normal timings n ure fast is also considered . but if it before then u can eat n drink.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
1 thing that really edited me is that why cannot u bathe during periods.
let me know abt this if u have any info.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
^ of COURSE you can bathe during your period!!!
Cleanliness is half iman, woman.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
Who said you can’t bathe? In fact you should bathe in warm water as much as you can…it makes your flow easier and keeps you clean.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
I think you are confused about the part of taking bath after your periods are over. Yes you must take a bath once your periods are over but that does not mean you canot take bath during your periods.
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
trust me I happen to know people who think you are 'not suppose' to shower during period
Re: Menses and restrictions on women (merged)
i do not know. i'm not sure abt this . i bathe .... but that qariyah told me that u should not.
this really edited me still.
