tough call, and this is possible in muslim community especially if the couple is going through any sort of fertility procedures and there is a mixup, or as someone said, mixup with babies at the hospital. it does not have to be infidelity.
regardless of reasons, mixups, infidelity..whatever, and what the discussion, action is with the spouse...what you have to keep in mind is that there is a kid who has no clue, has no part in any of it, and thinks the world of you as a hero, a guardian, a champion, ..a father. taking that away would be cruel and unjust.
PS: how much of an ass would someone feel like if the paternity test comes back negative, he decides to beat the crap out of the wife and kick her to the curb, and then find out it was a mixup at the hospital.
Mixup at the hospital can easily be checked, get the woman tested or get the other kids tested.

Well, if he isn't his son/daughter and he knows that for sure, then it's upto him to find the real father.
Also, he cannot claim him/her as his own child, because Islam places a great emphasis on lineage. It'd be haram for him to consider him his real son. However, he can treat him like his other kids, nothing wrong with that.

OP, only godless liberals have paternity issues. What are you implying by asking this question on a Muslim (because Pakistani non-Muslims are like yetis, they don't exist) forum? i dont get Maury. couples are some what okay if their SO been cheating and hiding... but they are devastated as soon as they find out about their child. . doesnt even make sense.

You see that your child doesn't really look like you. To calm your suspicious mind, you go to the hospital and perform a paternity test only to find out the horrible truth. What do you do?

No? The love you have for your child is on a different level and much greater than the one for your SO, in a sense so naturally you'd be more devastated learning that the person you've been loving for and caring for is not actually yours and may possibly no longer have ties with you.....
I'd rather lose an SO that wasn't faithful than to lose maternity to a child. Yes, it has more to do with blood but it still hurts and there's no guarantee that one day the real parent may want to suddenly step in and have all the rights over their child

Obviously to many people, a child is more important than their partner. So that child they have grown so attached to isn't even theirs can be, um, devastating. Of course many people would accept the child regardless because they helped raise it or thought it was their own and would dump the cheating partner. Also, when they find out the child isn't theirs they get double the devastation; one of finding out their child isn't even theirs and the partner they trusted was sleeping around behind their back.
