Sharing some (not necessarily all) details of your family life with your boss makes you "human" in his/her eyes. As Cheegum has mentioned it goes far when you require special treatment or have a responsibility that you are bound by.
It also goes a long way to show that you have a well-rounded personality and a life outside of work.
