thanks Munza - I FEAR the conversation might go something like this...
Casually in the lunch room or by the water cooler.....
Me: "Hey...nice shoes."
Him: "Hmm? Oh...uh...thanks."
Me: "They look Italian......."
Him: "No I got them at Walmart "
Me, laughingly: "oh...sorry....I'm a little bit of a connoiseur......yes...shoe connoiseur"
Him: "My wife says you can get 2 for 29.99 at Walmart or BOGO at payless"
Me: " okay- that's great!" ..... and running away
after years of working under women bosses , I have made a solemn pledge never to work for a woman … give her the power and she thinks she is god !
They are nasty , nasty , nasty , mind boggling creatures, the women bosses !
I am a woman myself and am a manager as well … and always remain extra careful not to put my staff through what I have been through … !
I got offered a job opportunity last year and out of interest I attended the interview but saw 4 women sitting in the interview panel, and they told me they had 7 out of 10 female staff in the team i would join eventually !
Its not easy for female bosses. They have alot of stereotypes to face and fight. They usually have no choice but to be tough. Just like how female cops are less likely to ever show any mercy as opposed to a male cop.
As for sharing family info, i feel its beneficial to keep your boss updated on your family life, and visa versa, as it would make it easier for him/her to understand when you need to take time off to tend to family emergencies. This has always worked well for me.
I rarely discuss my family at work but this guy is a bit self obsessed. Besides my name and high level project - I don't really think he cares what I do.
CB…couldn’t have said it better myself. I don’t like to stereotype. But the female bosses I’ve encountered can be a real NASTY PIECE OF WORK! I’ve seen such manipulative behavior on their part. I’ve seen them DELIBERATELY set employees up for failure. Such as asking minute unnecessary questions that few people (including the most experienced employees in the same branch would** not** know the answer to) and if you’re unsure about the answer…BOOM it goes on the employees evaluation. I’ve even seen female supervisors gang up on an employee. For example…let’s say your direct supervisor is Jenny. And another supervisor, Sally, sees you make an HONEST MISTAKE where you forget to do something…Sally will report you to YOUR supervisor, JENNY…who will then target you on your evaluation…even though Jenny NEVER witnessed your mistake and never even talked to you about it, or suggested improvement. Instead she decides to give you a nasty surprise. See what I mean? Evil, conniving, manipulative behavior. And the sad part is that…they’re not just rumors. They’re not just stories. They’re actual accounts of how people have been screwed over!
Sharing some (not necessarily all) details of your family life with your boss makes you "human" in his/her eyes. As Cheegum has mentioned it goes far when you require special treatment or have a responsibility that you are bound by.
It also goes a long way to show that you have a well-rounded personality and a life outside of work.
lol - everyone seems to agree women bosses are just nasty
I had the opportunity to "know" about a woman boss in another department. Although she was not my boss, I felt that I would not have like her to be a boss at all. You know she had 2 OTHER women as her "immediate guard". They would run to fetch things for her and practically kiss her up for better reviews and promotions. They would go pick up her lunches or go with her etc. It seemed like a "gang" all three of them were always together... and lol ... men were never seen around...

^ Yup, that's what I meant as well: GANGING! Not only do they kiss-up to one another...they feel that if they snitch on other employees, they'll be bestowed some special grace or favor. It's really disturbing. I've seen women in power display such insensitive behavior: Penalizing those under them for simple and honest mistakes, but not every admitting their own errors. Their lack of a conscience, in my opinion, is due to their excessive pride. There are articles on the Internet about various personality traits that are common among bosses. Some of those traits are positive such as leadership qualities. But others such has....narcissism, paranoia, refusal to be wrong....are among the most difficult and annoying to deal with.
