~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

Are we allowed to take medicine that has been perscribed to us? And it has a haraam ingredient in it?

What can one do in that case?

I need a quick answer, if anyone has dealt with this prblem before, or consulted a mufti? or has read aruling on it somewhere?

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

I read an query to religious scholar a while back but can't remember the answer. But back in England, when I found out my hayfever medicine had gelatin in it, I asked my doctor to prescribe me a different drug without it...

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

^ what if there isn't a different drug?

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

The drugs are there, just not FDA approved :D

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

I have heard in life threatening situations it is allowed. Looking for reference. unitl then if somebody else can confirm this.

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

if there is no alternative only and it is the last stage only then u can take the drug

even in severe conditions like druaght etc. u are allowed to eat watever u find if there’s a risk of death.

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

If it is to cure an illness, then it by all means is halaal. And I am quoting from a fatwa of Shaikh Muhammad Yousuf Ludhiyaanvi :rehm:

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

^Some drugs have alcohol in it. That's a sure indicator of Halal vs. Haram

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

o plz no alcohol debate at the moment (since C+hydroxyl groups discussion is way different than discussing specific ingredients of wine, beer etc)

Knowledge is knowing the rules ...

Wisdom is knowing when you can break them

Fiqh-us-Sunnah 4.6: Using Prohibited Things As Medicine

The majority of scholars hold that the use of wine and other prohibited things as medicine, is unlawful. They base their arguments on the following hadith:

Wa'il ibn Hujr al-Hadrami reported that, "Tariq ibn Suwaid asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, if he could use liquor as medicine. The Prophet replied: 'It is not a cure, but a disease'.''
(Muslim, Abu Daw'ud, and Tirmidhi.)

Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet, peace be upon him, reports that he once said: "Allah has not placed a cure for your diseases in things that He has forbidden for you.''
(Reported by Baihaqi; Ibn Hibban considers this hadith to be sound.Bukhari has also related it on the authority of Ibn Mas'ud.)

Abu ad-Darda reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Allah has sent down both the malady and its remedy. For every disease He has created a cure. So seek medical treatment, but never with something the use of which Allah has prohibited.''
(Reported by Abu Daw'ud. Among the natrators of this hadith we find Isma'il ibn 'Aiyash, who is considered trustworthy by the Syrians, but regarded as a weak narrator by the scholars of Hijaz.)

Abu Hurairah narrated: "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prohibited the use of a harmful medicine, namely, poison."
(Ahmad, Muslim, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah.)

Using a few, unnoticeable drops that cannot induce intoxication, is not prohibited, provided they are a part of a compound medicine. For example, the use of a small amount of pure natural silk in a woven fabric, as explained in al-Manar.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3865 (Narrated by Abu dDarda)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

if that is the only known and confirmed cure available, its allowed.

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

A similar question, on the topic:

If an alternative medicine is available, should that be taken instead? Generally speaking herbs and natural remedies...

Re: ~! Medicine that contains Haram ingredients.

thank you brother_quraysh. btw this hadith-e-Mubarik is really touchy
