What if the alternative is less available?
Is morphine allowed? It is an opiate ...
Are poisons allowed? What about venom? Yes they too are cures/preventions/remedies

They do claim that. But the effectiveness of homeopathic medicine is not as rapid as other drugs.

re the hadis posted by zobia.. the 'cure' to my knowledge doesnt lie in any forbidden thing anyway... however often alcohol or gelatin is the solvent or carrier medium for the chemicals. In this situation there is a cure, but no Muslim pharma that researches and produces other solvents for the cure. so effectively the only current cure is the alcohol/gelatin/other haram stuff based medicine.

Humans have achieved so much. Medical science has done wonders. We've found cures to so many diseases that were fatal for the longest time. But some of us are still stuck in medieval philosophies which make no sense whatsoever.

When alcohol is mentioned in terms of being haram, I don't think it's referring to anything with -COH. The intoxicant is specifically ethanol. Anyhow, as for your query if Br. Crescent finally got his answer, maybe he can help shed some light on this.
