Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Good news. Hopefully the others will be back online soon as well.

“Aaj, Dawn, BBC and CNN have been allowed on cable,” a spokesman for the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority told AFP.

Aaj, an Urdu channel, and Dawn, which broadcasts in English, are two of the country’s biggest.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

They probably signed on to new PEMRA rules.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Mashallah. God Bless the Free Media.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

you mean SOME free media... besides what changed in the situation of Pakistan to let media be free? Is SWAT already conquered? Are militants out of Pakistan already?

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Yep, it's still a lot, lot more freer than it was when Musharraf took over from our so-called democrats in 1999.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Aaj bowed down, but seems Geo/Jang still have some strength left. lets see how long it takes them to seek forgiveness :D

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

No but crap media like GEO was unable to spread ciaos in early days of the emergency which were really important for consolidation. Just imagine what GEO and Shahid Masood would have done....

Here is an example

GEO was running a news ticker that "ARMY HAS ENTERED INTO SUPREME COURT AND TOOK ALL JEDGES UNDER ARREST" (they ran that whole day) BUT I was lucky enough to catch the LIVE REPORT OF GEO's reporter from INSIDE SUPREME COURT at the same moment reporting that "ITS ALL QUITE IN SUPREME COURT, ALL JUDGES ARE INSIDE THE COURT AND HAVE LOCKED THE DOOR. ARMY OR ANY OTHER FORCES HAVE NOT ENTERED THE BUILDING YET"

What do you call this ? at minimum it can be called IRRESPONSIBLE REPORTING at very serious and important moment. By banning this crap media, Mush was able to stop them from increasing their viewer ship by false and irresponsible reporting and harm Pakistan.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Yep that is so true. Geo news correspondents like Shahid Masood and Ansar Abbasi were telling so much lies on Emergency Day, that they could not keep up with their lies, especially as reporters onsite were contradicting the crap they were spewing sitting in Dubai or the studios.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

GEO stands out like a beacon of light in these dark and horrible days. Hats off to GEO for exposing the dictator for what he is? If one puts emergency and tells the nations lies as to the reason for imposing the emergency and do not have the guts to admit that he did to save his kursi, why blame others.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Lies of media are very easy to be captured and govt should sue them and take to court for highest possible punishment rather then shutting them off (which is a usual dictator style). I am not saying media are innocent and bias free, I have always maintained that all these developments are fairly new to our people/media/industry, they will need time to develop... development doesn't come thru shutting them down/forcing to sign a law etc., rather take to court and *nanga*fy them there so people would know what is right and what is wrong.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Well, whatever GEO said doesn't really matter. Facts are facts. Army did TOOK OVER THE SC, and put justices under arrest, including the CJ. That is a fact.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

I think GEO has lot more subscribers outside of Pakistan so they'll survive even if there is total ban on it.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

So you are saying its OK for media to LIE and do FALSE REPORTING to THEIR OWN ADVANTAGE JUST TO GENERATE VIEWER SHIP?

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

They will soon if they get good treament like this one

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

If "majority of Pakistanis are with Musharraf" why would such bias and lies result in gaining more viewership? :D

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Technically it's not a lie. You're arguing on a point whether or not soldiers actually entered the SC building. My point is that it really doesn't matter b/c by arresting the judges of the SC they have violated the sanctity of institution of justice.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Tell me if GEO was lying not?

The time when GEO was reporting all this, Judges were not arrested and Army was not in Supreme court building.

Freedom comes with a responsibility, If you don't use the freedom with responsibility, it can be snatched. Its a very basic phenomenon only if you want to understand it. For example you have a right to drive car on the road but if you keep hitting other cars, your license will be revoked and your RIGHT to drive will be provoked

Media (specially GEO) was just taking the advantage of the situation by doing the false and irresponsible reporting and spreading the ciaos so that more and more people sits in front of TV and watch GEO and they can generate $$$$ by advertisers. Dr Shahid Massod and Abbas Ansari were telling the stories full of lies and Govt did well to shut it off.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

If it was granted through laws then it should be dealt with laws not dandas.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

Sure it should be dealt with laws and not dandas but emergency was a special case keyun k there was no time on hand to deal with corrupt media. Had media playing its role responsibly, tu channels band kerney kee zarorat hee nahi aatee.

Re: Media curbs relaxed - some Private TV channels back on air

So you mean judges were arrested and army went into courts to prove Geo was reporting correct?

Which story was full of lies, enlighten us.
