Re: med school in Pak

http://www.hec.gov.pk/htmls/hei/collunilist.htm

list of recongnised colleges and uni public and private both.

Re: med school in Pak

its MCAT.
KEMC conducts it every year and top 2000 students are called and then they’re allocated to different colleges according to the merit order. You have to take the same MCAT to get into private medical as well as the Dental colleges.
The merit order is usually like this in Punjab
1- King Edward MC
2-- Allama Iqbal MC
3- Fatima Jinah ( only for girls )
4- Rawalpindi MC
5 Nishter MC ( multan )
6- PMC ( Faisalabad )
7- QMC ( Buhawalpur )
8- De Mont Dental college Lahore, that is if u plan to go into dentistry
9- Nishter Dental College

There are roughly 250 seats in kemc, aimc and so on, but not sure for allthe colleges.

These were the govt. institues. If u don’t get admissiont here, you can also apply in private medical colleges which are not as good as the gov.t institutes but LMDC is good and them FMH medical college.
for further information u can visit. www.kemc.edu.pk
anyother questions , just PM me

Re: med school in Pak

well as far as private medical colleges in Punjab are concerned , LMDC is the best. They’ve got a great campus and a very nice faculty. But the problem lies with students, they ain’t that good.
Plus theri campus is situated pretty far from Lahore. Its in Lahore but near the border. So they dont’ get to see that many patients. Exposure in Govt. institutes is far more than any private medical colleges.
I think their website is www.lmdc.edu.pk not sure.

Re: med school in Pak

also check out www.uhs.edu.pk
its the new medical university and all the colleges are affiliated with it except KEMC n FJMC

Re: med school in Pak

Most of the doctors produced by Pak med schools are 2nd rate, mostly because of the huge amount of cheating that goes on, thus most don’t pass PLAB, USMLE.

Interesting article about med schools in Pakistan,by one of Pakistans leading journalists, in Dawn:

http://www.dawn.com/weekly/cowas/cowas.htm

The serious issues raised was the steep increase in fraudulent measures adopted by junior doctors trained in Pakistan in order to gain employment in the UK, including concocted CVs, false titles and tenures of jobs, fabricated testimonials, publications and presentations and other numerous acts involving plagiarism — all encouraged by certain senior doctors of Pakistan.

The letter gave details of how Pakistan’s medical colleges and teaching hospitals function (or rather malfunction), and how doctors obtain house jobs certificates without spending a single day in their wards. It described Karachi’s Civil Hospital as a “complete shambles” and “a den of corruption,” it blamed the PMDC, “a puppet of the federal ministry”, for letting medical education fall to the despicable standards it has reached today, it accused the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) of being out of control of the PMDC as the president of this institution runs it “on a commercial basis collecting exorbitant fees and has been in the chair for more than 20 years.”

Giving credit where credit is due, the writer did say that “there are still a few institutions such as the Aga Khan University, SUIT, etc, that have managed to maintain their professional standards.”

Re: med school in Pak

quite sad...but i too know a girl who got herself into University of MIchigan business school with below 2.7 gpa/ 21 on act !!! so it happens everywhere...it would b foolish to say that all the graduates from Pakistani med school cheated on exams and didn't do their jobs properly...

Re: med school in Pak

and as far as i know most doctors here (who studied in Pakistan) are earning what an average American doc is earning if not more. so i dont think u can call them 2nd rate doctors.

Re: med school in Pak

This article is specifically mentioning Karachi while most of the medical schools in Pakistan are in Punjab. You can’t take an isolated example and apply it to whole of the medical students who areworking their ass off. The article make it sound as simple as abc…
Our doctors are scoring highly in USMLE and as far as PLAB is concerned, u just need to pass it.
and lastly I’d like to mention that post graduation in Pakistan is even more difficult than abroad. You are examined so thoroughly adn very strictly. I don’t know why writers spread such concerns when they only have an isolated incidence and relate it to all the students.

Re: med school in Pak

The average score of my college fellows in USMLE is 92+
and 8 out of 10 students pass PLAb in first attempt.

If you don't know the situation, please think twice before commenting on it.

Re: med school in Pak

I found an interesting article

Only eighteen medical colleges recognised
Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Only 18 medical colleges are recognised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Colleges (PMDC).

PMDC documents show that 34 medical colleges in the four provinces are provisionally recognised. There is no recognised medical college in Islamabad.

Senior officials told Daily Times that several unauthorised medical colleges were playing with the futures of thousands of students. They explained that for provisional recognition a medical college must fulfil certain conditions within a stipulated time period. Degrees from unrecognised medical colleges are not valid and graduates from these colleges cannot apply for specialised medical education at any national or foreign institution.

Unrecognised colleges include: Services Institute of Medical Sciences, Sialkot Medical College, Shaikh Zayed Medical College, Sukkur Medical College, Jinnah Institute of Medical Sciences, Al Huda Medical College, Abbottabad International Medical College, University of Faisalabad Medical and Dental College, Independent Medical College Faisalabad, University College of Medicine and Dentistry and Islamabad Medical and Dental College.

Recognised medical colleges in Punjab include: Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore, Army Medical College Rawalpindi, Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore, King Edward Medical College Lahore, Nishtar Medical College Multan, Punjab Medical College Faisalabad, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur, Rawalpindi Medical College and De Montmorency College of Dentistry Lahore.

Provisionally recognised medical colleges in Punjab include: Dental Section of Nishtar Medical College, Dental Section of Army Medical College, Services Institute of Medical Sciences Lahore, FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry Lahore, Foundation University Medical College Rawalpindi, Islamic International Medical College Rawalpindi, Dental Section of Islamic International Medical College Lahore, Medical and Dental College Lahore, Dental Section of Lahore Medical College, Shifa College of Medicine Islamabad, Margallah College of Dentistry Rawalpindi and Wah Medical College.

Recognised medical colleges in Sindh include: Chandka Medical College Larkana, Dow Medical College Karachi, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro, People’s Medical College for Girls Nawabshah, Sindh Medical College Karachi and Aga Khan University Medical College Karachi.

Provisionally recognised medical colleges in Sindh include: Karachi Medical and Dental College, Baqai Medical College Karachi, Baqai Dental College Karachi, Fatima Jinnah Dental College Karachi, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Medical Sciences/Isra University Hyderabad, Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry Karachi, Jinnah Medical and Dental College Karachi, Sir Syed College of Medical Sciences for Girls Karachi, Ziauddin Medical College Karachi, Liaquat Ali Khan Memorial College of Dentistry Karachi, Altamash College of Dental Medicine Karachi and Muhammad Medical College Mirpurkhas.

Provisionally recognised medical colleges in NWFP include: Dental Section of Ayub Medical College, Khyber College of Dentistry Peshawar, Gomal Medical College DI Khan, Frontier Medical College Abbottabad, Kabir Medical College Peshawar, Sardar Begum Dental College and Women Medical College Abbottabad.

Balochistan has only one recognised medical college: Bolan Medical College Quetta. The dental section of the college is provisionally recognised.

Currently, the PMDC has no authority to ban illegally operating medical institutions. Officials said the government is expected to implement a new law to empower the PMDC to ban illegal medical colleges.

Last year, in a petition filed by a medical college against the PMDC, the Lahore High Court declared that the PMDC had no authority to recognise medical colleges in the country. The court added the PMDC’s role was limited to the recognition and registration of the doctors.

The Supreme Court later suspended the Lahore High Court ruling against the PMDC. However, the case remains pending before the apex court.

According to PMDC rules, a medical college must have documents of ownership, possession, and plan of academic blocks. Adequate physical facilities for academic blocks, dissection halls, common rooms, cafeteria, medical/dental equipment related to laboratories, libraries, various models and mortuary must also be provided for students.

Every college must be financially viable. Financial resources should be clearly indicated according to level, size, and type of the proposed institution. The institute should fulfil all legal formalities. The faculty should be employed on a full-time basis and qualified as per regulations for appointment given by the PMDC.

A college should have an attached teaching hospital. The hospital should be well equipped and must be functional at the time of the college’s first inspection.

So according to the article, De Montmorency College of Dentistry is the only recognized dental school in Pakistan. I searched on google and i'm unable to get its official website. does anyone know anything about it or have anyone attented De Mont college?

Thanks all for the replies, they were all very informative.

Re: med school in Pak

Would you like to give the national statistics for those who fail the PLAB,pt1 +2?

I don't think you do. 'Sorry' if the truth hurts

Re: med school in Pak

To say it is an 'isolated' example is wishful thinking. The article specifically refers to Med schools throughout Pakistan, using one school in Karachi as an example.

Cheating and corruption is the norm in Pakistan, med schools are no different.

The minority are exceptions , and the article does mention this.

In addition it is not written by some 'quack', Cowasjee is the most famous and respected journallist in Pakistan

For those who do , as you say 'work their ass off', good for them, they will become good doctors, pass the PLAB,USMLE, etc. However this in not the case for the majority.

Re: med school in Pak

If you look closely, you’ll find that all these institutes are in Sindh. Not a word about Punjab. Agha Khan is a very good institute but SUIT ? Its a post graduate training institute not for undergraduate students. As far as Sindh medical colleges are concerned, other than AKU, there is not other institute worth mentioning. DOW is ok but other than that …NONe..
Recognised medical colleges in Punjab include: Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore, Army Medical College Rawalpindi, Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore, King Edward Medical College Lahore, Nishtar Medical College Multan, Punjab Medical College Faisalabad, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur, Rawalpindi Medical College and De Montmorency College of Dentistry Lahore.
KEMC, AIMC,FJMC, QMC, RMC n De Mont are very good institutes. And these are not in minority!
As far as Ayub Medical ,Khyber and Bolan medical college in Balochistan, they are thought to be sub-standard institutes in the medical community.

Re: med school in Pak

Using one school in KHI as an example. There are other schools too, like KE, AIMC, FJMC but no, since these journalists only want to highlight the evils in the society ,they won't bother. Tell him to take example of Bolan medical college in balochistan and apply it to whole of pakistani medical colleges, I'm sure that would be an even juicier article.
I agree that Cowasjee is not a quack, but he's not a doctor either, is he ?

I can give you examples of Pakistan doctors teaching in institutes like Harvard. I wonder why they were not taken as an example.
In his next article again he's quoting an example of a single person and applying it to all of the medical doctors in pakistan. Yellow journalism!

Re: med school in Pak

Since you're so very interested in this thing, why don't you look it up urself.
yeah it hurts, but what hurts me more is how people like you who have no idea about the ground reality can comment on the situation like this. Just because you read an article in dawn doesn't exactly make you a PHD on this subject.

Re: med school in Pak

I think some of you have taken this so personally that your reply belies your knee jerk reaction.

Nobody is saying there are absolutely no good schools or doctors to come out of Pakistan, that would be ridiculous. After all,a nation of 150 million is bound to produce at least some!

The point is that most of the med schools in Pakistan are not up to Western standard, and I don't think you can disagree if you have a an objective outlook.

This applies not just to med schools, but all of Pakistan's education system.

The minority who do work hard, don't cheat, etc go on to pass PLAB,USMLE and are of the same standard as Western doctors, and good for them, they worked hard and deserved it. I suspect many of the people on this forum are among them.

However again, I'm sure they will agree they are among the minority.

Either way, good luck to you all.
