Meat not washed properly

This is really embarrassing for me, and I know it sounds very gross. But I was cooking chicken earlier and although I had washed the chicken as normal, i guess it wasn’t enough because several minutes later as I checked on it, several pieces had blood on them. and it was mixing into the masala/shorba. I know this sounds ver disgusting but this is the first time its ever happened. Should I just throw the salan away, or let it cook alot longer? and is it safe?

Re: Meat not washed properly

ok i dont understand - you want meat without any blood? you realize meat is basically flesh, bone, cartilage etc and will have some blood in it no matter how much you scrub it? nothing wrong with blood. blood sausages..mm.. yum.

its best not to wash poultry anyway, unless you want to contaminate your entire sink area..

Re: Meat not washed properly

why would u throw it away? there's nothing wrong with a bit of blood...if u really wanna get grossed out think of all the bone marrow oozing out when u cook meat lol. seriously though there's nothing gross or embarrassing or dangerous abt a bit of blood on meat as long as its all cooked properly obviously

Re: Meat not washed properly

If its only a little blood I wouldn't worry the temperatures of the heat would have killed all the bacteria anyway

Queer, I guess there was a little bit of a blood clot (sorry I dont know what its called) stuck between some parts of the bones that Id idnt get to take out. Normally I hardly ever see blood in my salan.

Re: Meat not washed properly

if the clots arent too many , just bhoono the meat a little longer then usual ....

..but if the clots are big and disturbing , then yeah , throw the masala and clean the meat and start the cooking process again ....

Note to self: Do NOT eat any chicken cooked by queer.

Are you kidding me dude? How hard is it to clean the sink after washing poultry? There is that little yuck stuff always stuck at the tip end of a leg quarter...you better get rid of it or the entire dish will smell like yuck.

To the OP, pick up that piece that is releasing blood and wipe it off with a paper towel and throw it back in. It is usually the leg or the thigh portion that does that. Wash it thoroughly beforehand.

Re: Meat not washed properly

Soaking the meat in a pot with water and vinegar is also good.

Re: Meat not washed properly

or u cud just add vinegar into ur salan while bhooning it n it shud dry up al the blood

what is this yuck stuff that is stuck to the meat you buy? i would recommend buying meat from a hygienic butcher.

are you going to clean your entire sink and any other area where your chicken washing has dripped on to, with bleach? if not, your kitchen is a bio-hazard teeming with Salmonella and possibly E. coli too. especially if you buy the kind of chicken with “that little yuck stuff always stuck at the tip end of a leg quarter” and things that make “the entire dish will smell like yuck”.

here is the USDA recommendation on the topic.
Washing raw poultry, beef, pork, lamb, or veal before cooking it is not recommended. Bacteria in raw meat and poultry juices can be spread to other foods, utensils, and surfaces.

Awwww never thot i'd see the day im seeing a cat fight in the food forum. Woh bhi btwn 2 dudes :@:

Re: Meat not washed properly

^ make that three

assuming it is frozen chicken, you are thawing it on or in something, if it has any packaging you are taking that off while it sits on something, unless you are directly taking pieces from it and putting it in the pan and then tossing the container, ..regardless you are using something to open the container.

if you are marinating the meat .. you are doing it in or on some sort of utensil or vessel...you may be disposing of the leftover marinade in the sink, if not you are putting it in the sink to wash, or dishwasher...

whatever you thaw the food in or on needs to be washed, whatever you use to open the packing needs to be washed, and unless you are doing a 'splish splash I was taking a bath' rendition while doing so, u can easily open the meat or chicken in a container and wash it in the container and clean that container and the sink properly, it really should not be going anywhere else anyway.

PS: except for that splish splash scenario or if ppl do monty python renditions and slap each other with chicken.

Re: Meat not washed properly

oh god please wash the meat... lil clots wont' matter but please wash the meat. Its not healthy to cook meat without washing I think. No butcher.. at least not the halal ones will wash it and give it to you. You have to do it yourself.

Re: Meat not washed properly

I had my own personal butcher :@: he would wash it and clean it at the shop n put it in in the pan for me :D

Re: Meat not washed properly

^ are we talking animal meat here?

Re: Meat not washed properly

^nopes we talking about human meat :dixsi:…duh of course we’re talking about animal meat :smack:

Aww that's so sweet...yup i'm in the market for one as well :P

Re: Meat not washed properly

I agree with queer, its not recommened to wash meat, it makes the meat waterly or something .. I have never seen chefs on TV wash their meat ...

like we get fresh whole chickens and my husbands makes pieces of it and i put them in a bag without washing it and freeze it, when I have time I thaw it in water when I dont it lands in the pot without washing and it still tastes good.

Re: Meat not washed properly

yeh.. if your dish stinks, it isnt because you didnt give your chicken a shower.. its coz you cant cook.

Re: Meat not washed properly

Oh come on...not even a simple rinsing, and removing those liver cartilege pieces (WHAT ARE THOSE????)
