It seems like visiting mazaars are a big thing in Pakistan and India. There is a big one in clifton which is a very popular place, I remember. I am wondering if this is allowed? Can one visit such places or will it be considered shirk? Some people just go to read fatiha and that’s it. What is the significance of such mazaars?
^I think ur referring to abdullah shagazis mazaar ( I think that's how it's spelled) but I have no idea what the purpose is or if its considered shirk.
I don't go to mazaars. I honestly don't see it's significance. But I have a question because I do t know why people exactly go to mazaars. I know it's because they want to ask for something but the person who's mazaar it is, is considered to be a devout person. So do people go there to ask that specific person (which would be considered shirk) or do they go there just to pray for the person and then ask Allah fir whatever they want (which I don't think would be considered shirk, please correct me if I'm wrong)?
People who have passed away, good or bad, need our prayers for their own blessing. Thats all. All other modifications and developments are indicative of disturbed minds and weaker faith.
my thinking is that when you need something from Allah swt, you don't need to go via another person to make dua. Namaz is your direct contact with Allah swt, why can't we just pray namaz and ask him directly. So considering that, would it be allowed for someone to still go to a mazaar with the intention of chadar charhaing or whatever.. because I have heard it's not permissible for women to go to graveyards.

First part of your understanding is absolutely correct. You dont need a middle-man to help you get in touch with Allah. He knows even what you think, so I doubt He needs someone to translate or whatever for Him. This is total ignorance.
Second part I believe is not true. Men and women are encouraged to visit graveyards - the idea is to keep your own death/grave in mind all the time.
^then it's a huge misconception in pakistan because whenever i wanted to visit my grandparents' grave, i was not allowed. here though, i have seen alot of our family friends go to their loved ones' grave without any issues.
Yup it is one of the many misconceptions in Pakistan. Women in my family visit our graveyard in the village regularly and pray fariha. My mother and sisters visit my father's grave every Friday for fatiha. Its all in the head but when you visit the graves of your loved ones and shed a few tears, you start to feel very light. Plus you see people getting buried, new and old graves - keeps reminding of your own day. Makes sense why it is encouraged.
100% agree with you if you see it from that angle.
But the thing is most of the people who visit mazaars dont ask/expect the deceased Buzurg for direct help. They want a waseela. They believe that this Hasti is “alive” and that Allah listen to this Hasti more than those people.
Shirk for one, sawaab for other. When it comes to beliefs, good or bad, you can’t do anything about it.
Now it’s true that so much goes on on these mazaars now-a-days like drugs, child kidnappings, homeless and criminals staying there depending on how large and crowdy the mazaar is, so do consider these things as well.
So** Shay**, the short answer for your question would be it all depends on your beliefs and circumstances in which you want to visit such place. there is no right and wrong answer for this. some people go just because of the beauty or uniqueness of the place. imo any mazaar environment is not ideal for women but make sure you do accompany some adult males if you do visit.

Perhaps there are people who need a middle man to make Allah hear what they have to say - or like PM said 'amplify the signals'. At least I dont, Alhamdulillah.
