Materialism

After reading Niksik baji’s thread Ajj kal ki lardkiyaan I have been thinking about materialism. I think almost everyone in this world is materialistic but why people always call women for being materialistic??? Why men aren’t ever called materialistic?

And also, what is your definition being materialistic and do you really think that girls are more materialistic than guys?

Re: Materialism

Do you know these days men are more materialistic in the sense that they buy latest phones, they strive to have the best cars and they buy designer clothes and all. I believe men are to a certain extent more materialistic than women.

Re: Materialism

Yes i really don’t know why only girls are materialistic, clearly men are just as crazzy! Unless its taking a toll on your life and faith i don’t find it to be such a big deal. Who doesn’t want nice things? I would love a nice car right now:wub:!

also some men work like crazy earning more than needed by their family. they spend life making money n ignore themselves as well as their family. aren't they materialist too?

Ladies you confusing here again, one who strives for well being and better life and believe in himself to achieve that person is not materialistic!

who girls are considered materialistic, cause mostly they go for guy who has better car, a filthy rich, they do value a nice car, home and a boy part of the package. without that a materilaistic girl will not fall for that.

Re: Materialism

Men are just as materialistic people.

If we want a guy with a better car, nice salary, home, etc...they want a girl who is fair, skinnnnny, long hair, doctor, rich family, lots of jehez, etc. Why do you think giving furniture is standard jehez in Pakistan nowadays? Because men are just as materialistic as women. :)

Its usually a two-sided thing.

Re: Materialism

Furniture is still standard jehez?? I thought by now people maybe would get common sense, but i guess not!

Re: Materialism

no common sense. they hav got worse now. very shamelessly many guys demand their in laws for motor bikes n even houses.

Furniture is DEFINITELY standard jehez in Pakistan...without a doubt. My cousin just bought herself a living room and bedroom set...she is getting married in July. :) Sad isnt it?

They have gotten smarter about it now...they actually demand cold hard cash upfront even before they see the girl! They screen the rishtas...by asking "how much cash in jehez" right away...LOL!!!

well i disagree with u coz ye mobile ki lanat dono in men and women me hai show baazi k liye. haan ye cheez bohot ghalat hai k only women are materialistic in reality both men and women mostly are materialistic aur na men is me pichay hn na hi women. dono sath sath hn.

and it is a matter of shame for all of us.

:(

Re: Materialism

materialistic is not buying gadgets or cars. If you can afford it then buy it, I dont see an issue there.

Materialistic is when you dont care about your love ones and their emotional needs and other things that matter in life.

Re: Materialism

i’m as old as the furniture in our house. …you can’t call me materialistic. :hinna:

Re: Materialism

Materialism is buying luxury items and not items of necessity. Remember men buy the items that are necessary for a comfortable life like a house, a car, a phone etc.

Women buy items that are not necessary. No offense but the third handbag from Prada will never be a necessity. It is a luxury thus women are more materialistic.

Re: Materialism

^ Agree. I'm siding with the males on this issue. Women are definetly more materialistic. Women will spend hours shopping for things they don't need but want. Pedicures every week, a new Coach purse every month (and not to mention the hours they spend discussing how some next chick is wearing a fake Coach purse and how to tell whats fake and real).

Guys really only spend more on cars and electronic gadgets which they NEED.

I don't know a single girl who wouldn't be ecstatic if her husband/fiance got her a huge sparkly diamong ring.

Where did you get this idea that women are more materialistic? Because they like designer brands?

Who owns those designer brands? Mostly men.

Women are dumber than men but not materialistic.

Re: Materialism

Wanting mobile etc is not materialism rather wanting in while disregarding other persons financial needs is.

Men and women are both materalistic. Women get the flak because of society, but men also go for better job, cheat or do various things in business to make money, but in the end they are known as ambitious.

and what is wrong with that as long as you can afford it and you have taken care of your other social and moral obligations that required the usage of your money.

Now if someone thinks that instead of buying an Iphone, I should've rather send that money to the poor kids of Somalia, then yes, in theory its a beautiful thought but in reality, it does not make sense, cause really .. as much as I love humanity, I am not gonna bust my behind only to save humanity, I would also like to buy some items of luxury for myself and my family. If I start doing that, outside my basic food (no sirloin steak for TLK's family, daal roti is just fine, steak is luxury), two pieces of clothing and basic shelter, everything in life could be classified as something that we do not need, hence becomes an item of luxury.

Women, you may say, are materialistic for completely justifiable reasons. The beemer that a man drives signifies his ability to make money. His ability to make money signifies his ability to provide for a family. His ability to provide for a family makes him the ideal target for a woman. This is all biologically and psychologically speaking of course.

Just because BOTH genders are materialistic about different things doesn't mean that one is more or less materialistic than the other.

I believe we ALL have a desire for luxury items, the latest technological conveniences, fame, etc. However, in some individuals......this desire becomes an preoccupation, obsession, and PRIORITY. And that's when you have a problem.

As TLK **suggested.... that a person becomes materialistic when other values such as spirituality, intellect, relationships, culture take a **BACK SEAT in life and the quest for "bigger" "better" "latest" and "fame" are at the forefront.
**
Man with a Plan** also made a good point about how society can use different terms for materialism. A materialistic woman might be called "shallow" or a "gold digger". Whereas a materialistic man might be labeled as "ambitious." And often times a man in his 40's 50's who suddenly trades in his down-to-earth family ride for a luxury sports car and trades in his wife for a woman 20 years younger is usually not called "materialistic" by society. Rather he is given the sympathetic "mid-life-crisis" label.

Materialism is when a person start associating his or her happiness/ success to the material things they can and can not have. When having brand name / expansive things become as important or even more so as having good relations with others. I am a female but a glance to wedding and fashion section on this forum strengthen the given argument that generally women have become more materialistic than men.
