Masters or Work?

I am in 2 minds about what to do next year. I can either do a MA straight away, or get a job and gain experience (+ save some money) and do an MA starting 09/2006 instead.

I fugure these are the +'s of doing my MA straight away:

  • get my MA by age 22/23
  • I am enjoying my subject at the moment

Negatives:

  • Will have to incur 8K debt (min), which will take perhaps 60 months to pay back.

And the weigh up for work:

+'s:

  • gain experience for my CV
  • Can reduce debt by saving some £

Negatives:

  • Will delay my MA by a year
  • Will I still be motivated?

What should I do.

I intend to finalize all applications in Jan, so I need advice quick.

What would you do?

Thanks,

Leg

U just want get dgree or do u have any other objectives

I guess my primary aim now is to get my MA, but I'd consider rearranging my priorities if it was in my long term interest.

I'd get experience and figure out if I really wanted to do a Masters and whether in the same field or not... when you're in the flow of things, you're likely to get confounded in the same mindset and decide to do something that may look better on the outset.

To me, getting an MA by the age 22/23 is not exactly an advantage... if I were to compare two candidates, one who took a couple of years off vs. someone who went straight out for an MA, I'd select the first one cuz it shows me initiative to explore and ascertain your objectives before deciding to do a masters.

Work and study. I did. We had evening classes for the working students.

Are you an employer?

In which case, is it a DEFNITE advantage to work now and do an MA later?

I probably cant do both. I'm...you know...lazy....ish.

Well, I would say that working would give you much more confidence for a prefessional environment than studying for a degree. I think I would have opted for work. My dad was after me to study. I didnt compromise on my shoq for working and did both simultaneously.

couldn't have said better than Umar Talib!

I have opted for work even though I already took my GRE and everything but then I found an excellent internship as well as my prof. suggested me to work for a while and then decide abuot my future studies. Also, I am in a very diverse major that requires more of the knowledge gained through experience rather than textbooks, so it really depends on your major and your chances of finding a good job/intern.

Dun worry about staying motivated because I think you will be more ready for studying for another yr. and eager to do the Masters after a break than right after your bachelors.

I believe it depends on personal choices , i mean individual need .. i’ll personaly prefer to work after bach.. thats how i can gain real world experiance and can save money ( loans mean you are working for somebody else for years ) :lahol: however advantages and disadvantages makes balance of life :whistling :whistling

:ahaa: :biggthumb

rob a bank…:dhimpak:, similar to the current 20m pound heist that took place in UK

Thanks…thats always an option.

I figure I’ll see if I can get the funding, if not, I’ll work…

Side issue, whats Birbeck College like?

guys...I need answers.

I would say get some experience, work a few years and then go for masters, it will become more relevant then.

another option is to do neither. Sit home and let mommy and daddy feed you. You only have one life, make the best of it.

:jhanda:

and let them feed grand-children too :hoonh:
