Uneasy Calm…Muslims Under Attack

Government of Gujarat

All Muslim property has been systematically been erased by the Hindus.** We were living in our community therefore we have managed to defend ourselves but those whose number in the surrounding villages was small their property was looted and they were hunted like dogs. There was and still no law enforcement agency in sight. Still the situation is tense an uneasy calm prevails. Those who saved their lives now think what will happen next.

Two days ago we were surrounded by Hindu mobs armed with pipes machetes
swords supported by police. When the Hindu mobs attacked thrice the police guns were only pointed at Muslims. We put a SOS for help and I believe the uneasy calm that exists is due to the international pressure. Till now no media has come to cover the plight of Muslims here.
In the town of Atarsumba two of our Muslim brother of our community were
dragged back into their shop locked and then burnt alive. We were so far
could not even hear their screams but we did get to see the burnt and
charred remains of what was their bodies in a decomposed manner more than
30 hours later.
Yesterday in 4 days we got milk and water. We are fortunate that in the
community we were having food to eat. Others have been less fortunate.
We
are divided into four community parts in four different areas each to fend
for its self. We total about 20,000 in all, divided in four parts minus
the women & children the population of men reduces to half or less.
Smaller communities and individuals phoned for help. We were helpless. It
was a situation where, either we defend ourselves and our wife and
children or go on a suicide mission to rescue others. Those who fell in 5
days of violence number over 300-400 in our area alone.
The situation was no different in the big cities of Ahmedabad and surat
Baroda etc. Parts of Gujarat still burn as I write to you. Yet the chief
Minister and the Home Minister say there is no law and order problem.

There is a relaxation in curfew today for 5 hours. Curfew…, which was
all along only for Muslims and not for the arsonist and murdering Hindu
mobs.
If things don’t change soon, we can’t envisage the outcome and
consequences of the ongoing situation.
Today each city and each town has divided in to two parts. The Muslim part
and the Hindu part. What this will eventually do is tear the fabric of the
Indian soiety; those Hindus and even friends who did this have now sowed a
seed of hatred in every heart. The question of terrorism that the India
talks about is this. **What will they do now to the terrorist Hindus? **
What happened in Godhra as Muslims we condemn such act, but also on the
other hand there no justification of the massacre that is being carried
out by Hindu terrorists in the name of retaliation. **The Government of
India has so far been unsuccessful in controlling Hindu fanatic Terrorists
arsonist and Murderers. Hindu terrorists has crossed all limits of human rights.

Today we turn to the muslim community world wide for assistance and Dua
for the the plight of Muslims in Gujarat and our town of Himmatnagar. **

Gujarat, which had yet to recover from the killer earthquake only a year
ago, has now undergone through hell - the worst anti-Muslim pogroms
witnessed since Partition in 1947.** The official count of victims is about
to cross 600 while unofficial estimates put them at around three times
higher. Most of the innocent victims have been roasted alive with the
active connivance of the state BJP ** administration which shirked its
responsibilities and gave green light to the rioters to exact justice from
innocents. **About three thousand crore rupees (over US$ 600 million) worth of properties, houses, shops and factories have been torched.

Hundreds of mosques, madrasas and dargahs have been burnt down or damaged.
In Ahmedabad alone about 30 mosques have been vandalised and Hanuman idols have been installed therein.**
Tens of thousands of people have taken shelter away from their homes and have nowhere to go as their homes have
been burnt down or are not safe to return. There are hundreds of orphans
who have lost one or both parents.

Almost all the victims are Muslims who were targeted by the extremist
criminals only because of their faith.** It is your responsibility to come
forward right away to help your brothers in their hour of need. There is a
reliable Muslim relief agency in Gujarat which has been active in the
earthquake relief with distinction. This agency is the ‘Islamic Relief

AHMEDABAD JOURNAL
In India, a Child’s Life Is Cheap Indeed
By CELIA W. DUGGER http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/07/international/asia/07INDI.html

AHMEDABAD, India, March 6 — The flatbed truck pulled up to the Muslim
cemetery today bearing a terrible cargo. Volunteers with plastic bags tied
to their hands lifted tiny charred bodies from the back, where they were
piled without so much as a sheet for cover, and gently carried them onto
the grounds as though they were just asleep. These 21 Muslim boys and
girls, burned to death by raging Hindu mobs and unclaimed in the city
mortuary for days, were buried here this afternoon in mass graves for
victims of the worst Hindu-Muslim riots in nearly a decade.
No relatives were there to mourn them, just solemn young men with
handkerchiefs over their noses who performed the final rituals.
If the children’s families can ever be identified — if, in fact, the
families did not perish in the flames — **they will be entitled to 100,000
rupees, or $2,050, in compensation from the state, half the amount the
state has promised to the mostly Hindu families
of the 58 people who burned to death on a train loaded with Hindu activists.

“The government is pricing Muslims at 100,000 rupees and Hindus at 200,000 rupees,” **Afaullah Khan, a businessman and volunteer, said bitterly as the children’s blackened, twisted bodies were laid on the sandy ground in the commodious shade of a banyan tree.

The government says the train attack dead were victims of terrorism, while
the more than 500 people who died in the days of rioting that followed
were victims of Hindu-Muslim violence,
hence the difference in valuations.
But to the state’s Muslim minority, the government’s compensation policy
has become one more piece of a puzzle that is fast convincing them that
officials here in the western state of Gujarat are discriminating against them for political gain.

The 21 children and one woman brought today to the Kalandri mosque
cemetery joined 104 other riot victims already buried here, but no senior
state official has yet come to console the Muslim community,
the
volunteers said. None arrived today, though news of the funeral was on the front page of this morning’s Indian Express.

The disillusionment of Muslims here and at a nearby school that shelters
thousands who fled the mob violence reflects the broader anger and
disappointment of the city’s Muslims at a police force that failed to
protect them and a **state chief minister who blamed Muslims for provoking
the worst instances of mob violence directed at them. **
Last Friday and again on Monday morning, people living on the school’s
crowded concrete floors complained that the government had given them no
food, no water, no clothes, no blankets.
The state did not begin to help until five days after the riots began,
said Daud Bhai Ghariyali, a watch shop owner who is helping run the
shelter. Sure enough, as he stood in the teeming shelter, a state health
official finally showed up with doctors to give women and children checkups.

Islamic Human Rights Commission

MARCH 6, 2002

**URGENT ALERT: Unwillingness and Failure of Indian Government to Control
Gujarat Violence and Stop Massacres **

The Islamic Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by the failure of
the Indian government to protect its minority Muslim communities from mass
slaughter and the destruction of their property.
Background

Communal riots in the Indian state of Gujarat have resulted in over 570
deaths, although unofficial reports claims that the death toll is likely
to have crossed the thousand threshold. A large number of these appear to
be unarmed Muslim civilians. The attacks, carried out in an organized way
by Hindu extremist groups,
have been accompanied by the destruction and
looting of property and the demolition of holy places.
According to western media reports and views of leading Indian political
personalities, such as the ultra-rightwing Chief Minister of Gujarat,
Narendra Modi, the massacres are in response to the attacks on Vishwa
Hindu Parishwad (VHP) activists on 27 February. 60 of them, passengers on
the Sabormati Express were burnt to death at Godhra Railway Station in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat.

The mainstream media has failed to report that the attacks on the VHP were in reaction to their abduction of a 16-year old Muslim girl.

Initially a
crowd had gathered outside the train compartment, where the VHP members
were holding the girl, to demand her release. However facing hostility,
the crowd retaliated by the setting fire to the compartment.
The riots have been taking place under the protection of the Police/ State
Reserve Police (SRP). BJP insiders admit that the Police were under the
instructions from the Chief Minister Narendra Modis administration to turn
a blind eye to the anti-Muslim violence that began in the states main city
of Ahmedabad, and then swiftly spilt over into the neighbouring rural
areas.

The IHRC is alarmed not only at the failure of the State apparatus to put an end to the violence,** but also by the fact that the violence was encouraged by the states Hindu nationalist government. **

Moreover requests for the deployment of troops were delayed to allow Hindu
extremists time to carry out their orgy of violence. **The army was only
deployed on 1 March after extensive pressure from all quarters. **However,
the present army strength remains inadequate in view of the magnitude and
dimension of the on-going riots. Although thousands of security personnel
are patrolling the streets of Ahmedabad, the states main city, they have
not yet been able to reach the remote villages where the violence continues.

Although Indias Hindu nationalist prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee
appealed for calm in an address to the nation, many within the BJP who
believe that communal violence is the only way of regaining the partys sharply deteriorating electoral popularity.

Tensions between the Hindu community and the minority Muslim community
have always been high and are reminiscent of the riots which disrupted in
1992 after the VHP extremists demolished the Barbari Mosque to build a
Hindu temple. This has always been a cause for resentment between Hindu
and Muslim groups and has acted as a catalyst to recent tensions. IHRC is
further concerned that the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishwad), stated they will
begin building a temple on the site of the Barbari Mosque on 15th March
2002. Some parts of VHP have indicated that they will delay this process.
However IHRC feels that this project will only be a further catalyst for
violence and indeed will reward those who have carried out such brutal
violence in the name of Hindu nationalism.
Suggested Action

The IHRC calls on campaigners to:

  1. Write to Indian government ministers, calling upon them to put an
immediate end to the violence by deploying adequate security personnel to
actively protect Muslim minorities from such abuse and to investigate the
atrocities that occurred during the riots.
Email these letters to at least the Prime Minister and President of India
and if you have time to the others in the following list.
President of India, Shri K R Narayanan: [email protected]
Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee: [email protected]
Minister of External Affairs, Shri Jaswant Singh: [email protected]
Minister of Home Affairs, Shri Lal Krishna Advani: [email protected]
Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi: [email protected]
Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha, Dr Manmohan Singh:
    [email protected]
Minister of State for External Affairs, Omar Abdullah: [email protected]
Deputy Chairperson, Rajya Sabha, Najma Heptulla: [email protected]
Please see the specimen campaign letter attached below.

Dear . . .
I am appalled at the failure of the Indian government to put an end to the
communal riots in Gujarat. The death toll figures are extremely
disturbing as are reports of mass lootings and destruction of holy sites.
I am further alarmed at reports that the states Hindu nationalist
government ordered the police to turn a blind eye to the atrocities so
that the Hindu extremists could continue with their orgy of violence
against the minority Muslim population. The failure of the state
apparatus to respond appropriately highlight the lack of protection
afforded to Muslim minorities within that region. It is essential that
the security forces put an end to this cycle of violence and provide equal
protection to all.
I request an immediate independent, impartial investigation into the
causes of the riot, the incidents that occurred, what measures were
adopted by the state apparatus to deal with the situation, what steps have
been taken to bring the perpetrators to justice, and what measures are
being taken with a view to compensating the victims.
I am also deeply concerned that the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishwad), state
they will begin building a temple on the site of the Barbari Mosque on
15th March 2002. This will only be a further catalyst for violence and
indeed will reward those who have carried out such brutal violence in the
name of Hindu nationalism.
Yours sincerely

  1. Write to the Foreign Minister of your country, requesting an
investigation in to the riots, the rebuilding of the Barbari Mosque, and
requests for expulsion of India from the Commonwealth if it fails to
    comply.
Specimen letter to the British Foreign Minister:
    Rt. Honorable Jack Straw
    Name..
    Foreign & Commonwealth Office
    Address..
    King Charles Street
    London, WC1
    Date
    Dear Mr. Straw,
I am writing with deep concern about the failure of the Indian government
to contain the communal riots in Gujarat and to adequately deploy security
forces to protect the lives and property of the Muslims. The death toll
figures are extremely disturbing as are reports of destruction and looting
of personal property and the demolition of holy places.
Reports reveal that the states Hindu nationalist government ordered the
police to turn a blind eye to the atrocities so that the Hindu extremists
could continue with their orgy of violence against the minority Muslim
population. The riots of Gujarat highlight the failure and unwillingness
of the state apparatus to put an end to the cycle of violence and provide
all with adequate protection. It highlights the lack of protection Muslim
minorities are given in that region, and indeed in India.
I urge you to use your influence to request that the Indian government
immediately set up an independent, impartial investigation into the causes
of the riot, the human rights abuses that occured, what measures were
adopted by the state apparatus to deal with the situation, what steps have
been taken to bring the perpetrators to justice, and to award compensation
    to the victims.
I urge you to request the Indian government to
stop this catastrophic event. Furthermore, the British government should
urge the Indian government to allow the rebuilding of a mosque at the site
of the 16 Century Barbari Mosque, which was destroyed by Hindu extremists
in 1992. Indeed, the failure of the government to protect the Muslim holy
site has been the cause for long-held resentment.
In light of such facts, if the Indian government fails to comply with the
requests, I ask you to request the immediate suspension of India from the
Commonwealth until such time it agrees to comply and to oppose plans to
give India a permanent seat at the Security Council.
    Yours sincerely,

Violence flares on a nation’s holy ground

**The novelist Pankaj Mishra reports **on the town which is at the heart of
India’s sectarian violence
Friday March 1, 2002
The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,659926,00.html

A few weeks ago I was in Ayodhya, the north Indian pilgrim town where in 1992 an uncontrollable crowd of Hindus demolished a 16th century mosque that they claimed had been built by the Moghul emperor Babur over the
birthplace of one the most revered Hindu gods, Lord Rama.
I had travelled there to see Ramchandra Paramhans, an elderly Hindu abbot
who has dedicated his life to the struggle over the disputed mosque
territory, since initiating a legal battle in 1949 to wrest control of the
mosque back from local Muslims to return it to the Hindu community.

Mr Paramhans, who heads a militant sadhu sect, looks every bit the
irascible ascetic of Hindu legend, with his dense white beard and matted
locks.
Mr Paramhans is now more than 90 years old, and full of rage. … Mr Paramhans exploded: **“There are only two places
Muslims can go: Pakistan or Kabristan [graveyard].” **
To speak as a Hindu to Muslims is to get stock responses. At one of the
village Madrasas, or places of study, currently accused of being
staging-posts for Pakistani spies near the Indo-Nepal border, **Muslim
teachers spoke frankly and movingly of being harassed by the local
Hindu-dominated police force, until they realised that I only looked like
a Muslim; they then tried to assure me that they felt perfectly safe and
happy in India. **

Peter Popham: The myth of Ram’s temple has become a licence to kill in
India
**‘Muslim equals terrorist, Hindu nationalists tell each other; we have 140
million terrorists in our midst’ **

05 March 2002
http://www.independent.co.uk/story.jsp?story=270940

India is a big country, and it is usually big-hearted enough not to betray
signs of being bothered by what we Delhi-based foreign correspondents
write. So it was a rare event when, nearly a year ago, I was politely
summoned to the office of Raminder Singh Jassal, then Chief Secretary for
External Publicity in the Ministry of External Affairs, and given a sound
ticking off.

The main complaint was that I had written at some length about
Hindu-Muslim clashes that had broken out in several towns and cities
across India following the Taliban’s demolition of the Bamiyan Buddhas.
The Indian officials didn’t question the veracity of my report, but they
made it plain that they regarded it as “unfriendly” of me to have written
on the topic of communal disturbances at all. “Relations between majority
and minority communities have been far better under this government than
they were before,” Mr Jassal told me. “So when there is some little
incident, why focus on it?”

I expect no such call from the ministry this week. The deaths of at least
450, and probably more than 1,000, Gujaratis, nearly all Muslims, in four
days of communal bestiality have exploded for ever the Hindu nationalist
Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) claim to have presided over an era of
communal peace.

And now, riding the crest of that particular wave, the Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP, or “World Hindu Council”), an extremist group within the
same Hindu nationalist family as the BJP, is pressing ahead with its plans
to begin construction of the long dreamed-of temple to the god Ram in
Ayodhya, on the ruins of the mosque torn down by a mob of the same people
in December 1992. These two events, the Gujarat bloodbath and the Ayodhya
temple, are intimately connected. Taken together they throw into urgent
focus the question: what sort of people are ruling the world’s biggest
democracy today? Where are they headed?
The first man on earth was an Indian, and a Hindu. Hinduism was the
primeval religion, not just of India but of the world. There was no Aryan
invasion of India, no enslavement of the southern Dravidians. Hindus were
here from day one. Other people arrived on these shores, but eventually
they bent the knee to Bharat Mata, Mother India, and were knitted into the
Hindu fabric. Only the Muslims (and to a lesser extent the Christians)
stood out. They smashed temples and erected mosques on the rubble, with
sword and fire they tore millions of Hindus from the breast of Mother
India and brought them forcibly over to Islam. It is the duty of patriotic
Hindus to reverse that historic wrong.
That, reduced to its crude essentials, is the Hindu nationalist creed, and
it helps to explain why the primary goal of the most powerful political
party in this vast, impoverished country, with all its desperate problems,
should be the construction of a temple in a squalid little town in Uttar
Pradesh. Ayodhya, goes the mythology, is “Ramjanambhoomi”, the birth place
of Ram, an avatar of Vishnu. The Muslim invader Babur (and this, too, is
myth) tore down the great temple that stood here and built the Babri
Masjid mosque, demolished by the mob in 1992. “Hindu Rashtra”, the true
Hindu nation, cannot come into being until the temple is rebuilt.
The men who have been ruling India for nearly four years, including the
Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and his powerful second-in-command
Lal Krishna Advani, the Home Minister, are true believers in this, India’s
exotic variety of neo-fascism. But the world at large has gradually lost
sight of that fact. The nuclear tests conducted in May 1998, immediately
after they came to power, gave due warning that they meant business. But
the need to keep a squabbling and disparate coalition intact forced
Ayodhya off the government’s agenda. Mr Vajpayee’s became the first Indian
government to develop cordial relations with the US. Last September, India
became a front-line ally in the war against terrorism.

But while India’s stature grew abroad, at home Mr Vajpayee was often
described by critics on the left as the “mask” of the BJP, the acceptable
face of a neo-fascist movement that was only biding its time.
Mr Vajpayee, increasingly doddery at the age of 78, remains in place; but
in the past week the party’s mask has been ripped away. The war on
terrorism and India’s long military stand-off with Pakistan, which
continues undiminished, have given a new licence to the Hindu
nationalists. **Muslim equals terrorist, they tell each other: we have it on
American authority; we have 140 million terrorists in our midst. **At the
same time, recent BJP losses in state elections both in Gujarat and Uttar
Pradesh have given the hardliners a new urgency and and a new
determination. Strike, they have been told, while the BJP still holds
power. Strike to maintain and increase that power. Now is the moment for
dramatic, decisive action.

Mr Vajpayee has fostered the illusion of being a truly national leader,
but in Gujarat there is no such pretence: the BJP state government is
starkly partisan. After the killing of 58 Hindus in a train last
Wednesday, the event that ignited the violence, Gujarat’s Chief Minister,
Narendra Modi, quickly announced compensation of 200,000 rupees, about
3,000, to the bereaved families. Hundreds of Muslims have died since, but
there is no word of compensation for them. Mr Modi endorsed the VHP’s call
for a strike last Friday, his official nod to the ensuing bloodbath. The
police have stood idly by while the mob did its work; sometimes, victims
allege, they actively led the violence.
The BJP rose to power, as fascists do, through violence and the threat of
more: the Ayodhya demolition signalled its rapid rise from obscurity, the
vision of a state where Hindus rule supreme continues to excite its
ideologues. In this amazing but horrifyingly immature democracy, muscle
power and that includes the mass burning alive of women and children can
yield political power. The liberal, English-language papers here have
tut-tutted in a worried way, but encouraging communal carnage has done Mr
Modi’s government no harm at all. With the parliamentary opposition still
weak and divided, India has set off down a nightmare road.

What is the future for Indian Muslims?

Well buddy, Future is in the hands of Allah.

However, I fear that slowly the Islam of Indian Muslims is slowly getting diluted mainly because (1) The atmosphere is not Muslim and (2) being a practising Muslim is frowned upon by many Hindus. Sometimes, you may even be harassed.

Look at the Bosnian or Chinese Muslims - after decades of harassment, persecution and fear, their Iman is very weak. Many of them do not even know how to pray.

Alhamdulillah, the situation of Indian Muslims is far better than that of the Chinese Muslims.

And because Hindus are so obsessed by Muslims, many Muslims go to great lengths to please the Hindus. For example, there are many Muslims in India who are anti-Pakistan, which is very sad. If someone's pro-India, that's understandable. But being anti-Pakistani !!!! Because if you do not say you hate Pakistan, you stand a chance of being harassed by the Hindus. But what these Muslims dont understand is that you'll only take your Isam to the grave, not your nationality.

Anyways, I'm not in the best position to comment on this topic at length, but considering that a significant portion of the Indian population is made up of fascist Hindus like Andhra, it doesn't take a lot of guess work to figure out how it must be like in India.

who will invest in a country with communal
riots . it will end up like somalia.
when people started to loose jobs economy goes down and prices goes up people
will wake up.

CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY
Reflections on the Gujarat massacre
** By
Harsh Mander**

Numbed with disgust and horror, ** I return from Gujarat ten days after the terror and massacre ** that convulsed the state. My heart is sickened, my soul wearied, my shoulders aching with the burdens of guilt and shame.

As you walk through the camps of riot survivors in Ahmadabad, ** in which an estimated 53,000 women, men, and children are huddled in 29 temporary settlements,** displays of overt grief are unusual. ** People clutch small bundles of relief materials, all that they now own in the world, with dry and glassy eyes. ** Some talk in low voices, others busy themselves with the tasks of everyday living in these most basic of shelters, looking for food and milk for children, tending the wounds of the injured.

But once you sit anywhere in these camps, people begin to speak and their words are like masses of pus released by slitting large festering wounds.

** The horrors that they speak of are so macabre, that my pen falters in the writing. The pitiless brutality against women and small children by organised bands of armed young men is more savage than anything witnessed in the riots that have shamed this nation from time to time during the past century. **

I force myself to write a small fraction of all that I heard and saw, because it is important that we all know. Or maybe also because I need to share my own burdens. ** What can you say about a woman eight months pregnant who begged to be spared. Her assailants instead slit open her stomach, pulled out her foetus and slaughtered it before her eyes.** What can you say ** about a family of nineteen being killed by flooding their house with water and then electrocuting them with high-tension electricity. ** What can you say?

** A small boy of six in Juhapara camp described how his mother and six brothers and sisters were battered to death before his eyes. ** He survived only because he fell unconscious, and was taken for dead.

A family escaping from Naroda-Patiya, one of the worst-hit settlements in Ahmedabad, spoke of losing a young woman and her three month old son, ** because a police constable directed her to 'safety' and she found herself instead surrounded by a mob which doused her with kerosene and set her and her baby on fire.**

I have never known ** a riot which has used the sexual subjugation of women so widely as an instrument of violence in the recent mass barbarity in Gujarat.** There are ** reports every where of gang-rape, of young girls and women, often in the presence of members of their families, followed by their murder by burning alive, or by bludgeoning with a hammer and in one case with a screw driver. ** Women in the Aman Chowk shelter told appalling stories about how armed men disrobed themselves in front of a group of terrified women to cower them down further.

In Ahmedabad, most people I met - social workers, journalists, survivors - agree that what Gujarat witnessed was ** not a riot, but a terrorist attack followed by a systematic, planned massacre, a pogrom. ** Everyone spoke of the pillage and plunder, being organised like a military operation against an external armed enemy.

** An initial truck would arrive broadcasting inflammatory slogans, soon followed by more trucks which disgorged young men, mostly in khaki shorts and saffron sashes. They were armed with sophisticated explosive materials, country weapons, daggers and trishuls. They also carried water bottles, to sustain them in their exertions. The leaders were seen communicating on mobile telephones from the riot venues, receiving instructions from and reporting back to a co-ordinating centre. Some were seen with documents and computer sheets listing Muslim families and their properties. They had detailed precise knowledge about buildings and businesses held by members of the minority community, such as who were partners say in a restaurant business, or which Muslim homes had Hindu spouses were married who should be spared in the violence. **

This was not a spontaneous upsurge of mass anger. It was a carefully planned pogrom. The trucks carried quantities of gas cylinders. ** Rich Muslim homes and business establishments were first systematically looted, stripped down of all their valuables, then cooking gas was released from cylinders into the buildings for several minutes. A trained member of the group then lit the flame which efficiently engulfed the building. ** In some cases, acetylene gas which is used for welding steel, was employed to explode large concrete buildings. ** Mosques and dargahs were razed, and were replaced by statues of Hanuman and saffron flags. Some dargahs in Ahmedabad city crossings have overnight been demolished and their sites covered with road building material, and bulldozed so efficiently that these spots are indistinguishable from the rest of the road.** Traffic now plies over these former dargahs, as though they never existed. The unconscionable failures and active connivance of the state police and administrative machinery is also now widely acknowledged. ** The police is known to have misguided people straight into the hands of rioting mobs. They provided protective shields to crowds bent on pillage, arson, rape and murder, and were deaf to the pleas of the desperate Muslim victims, many of them women and children. **

There have been many reports of ** police firing directly mostly at the minority community, which was the target of most of the mob violence.** The large majority of arrests are also from the same community which was the main victim of the pogrom. As one who has served in the Indian Administrative Service for over two decades, I feel great shame at the abdication of duty of my peers in the civil and police administration. The law did not require any of them to await orders from their political superivisors before they organised the decisive use of force to prevent the brutal escalation of violence, and to protect vulnerable women and children from the organised, murderous mobs. The law instead required them to act independently, fearlessly, impartially, decisively, with courage and compassion. If even one official had so acted in Ahmedabad, she or he could have deployed the police forces and called in the army to halt the violence and protect the people in a matter of hours. ** No riot can continue beyond a few hours without the active connivance of the local police and magistracy. The blood of hundreds of innocents are on the hands of the police and civil authorities of Gujarat, and by sharing in a conspiracy of silence, on the entire higher bureaucracy of the country.** I have heard senior officials blame also the communalism of the police constabulary for their connivance in the violence. ** This too is a thin and disgraceful alibi.** The same forces have been known to act with impartiality and courage when led by officers of professionalism and integrity. The failure is clearly of the leadership of the police and civil services, not of the subordinate men and women in khaki who are trained to obey their orders.

Where also, amidst this savagery, injustice, and human suffering is the 'civil society', the Gandhians, the development workers, the NGOs, the fabled spontaneous Gujarathi philanthropy which was so much in evidence in the earthquake in Kutch and Ahmedabad? The newspapers reported that at the peak of the pogrom, the gates of Sabarmati Asram were closed to protect its properties, it should instead have been the city's major sanctuary. ** Which Gandhian leaders, or NGO managers, staked their lives to halt the death-dealing throngs? ** It is one more shame that we as citizens of this country must carry on our already burdened backs, that the ** camps for the Muslim riot victims in Ahmedabad are being run almost exclusively by Muslim organisations.** It is as though the monumental pain, loss, betrayal and injustice suffered by the Muslim people is the concern only of other Muslim people, and the rest of us have no share in the responsibility to assuage, to heal and rebuild. The state, which bears the primary responsibility to extend both protection and relief to its vulnerable citizens, was nowhere in evidence in any of the camps, to manage, organise the security, or even to provide the resources that are required to feed the tens of thousands of defenceless women, men and children huddled in these camps for safety.

The only passing moments of pride and hope that I experienced in Gujarat, were when I saw men like Mujid Ahmed and women like Roshan Bahen who served in these camps with tireless, dogged humanism amidst the ruins around them. In the Aman Chowk camp, women blessed the young band of ** volunteers who worked from four in the morning until after midnight to ensure that none of their children went without food or milk, or that
their wounds remained untended. ** Their leader Mujid Ahmed is a graduate, his small chemical dyes factory has been burnt down, but he has had no time to worry about his own loss. Each day he has to find 1600 kilograms of foodgrain to feed some 5000 people who have taken shelter in the camp. The challenge is even greater for Roshan Bahen, almost 60, who wipes her eyes each time she hears the stories of horror by the residents in Juapara camp. But she too has no time for the luxuries of grief or anger. She barely sleeps, as her volunteers, mainly working class Muslim women and men from the humble tenements around the camp, provide temporary toilets, food and solace to the hundreds who have gathered in the grounds of a primary school to escape the ferocity of merciless mobs.

As I walked through the camps, I wondered what Gandhiji would have done in these dark hours. ** I recall the story of the Calcutta riots, when Gandhi was fasting for peace. A Hindu man came to him, to speak of his young boy who had been killed by Muslim mobs, and of the depth of his anger and longing for revenge. And Gandhi is said to have replied: If you really wish to overcome your pain, find a young boy, just as young as your son, a Muslim boy whose parents have been killed by Hindu mobs. Bring up that boy like you would your own son, but bring him up with the Muslim faith to which he was born. Only then will you find that you can heal your pain, your anger, and your longing for retribution. **

There are no voices like Gandhi's that we hear today. Only discourses on Newtonian physics, to justify vengeance on innocents. We need to find these voices within our own hearts, we need to believe enough in justice, love, tolerance. There is much that the murdering mobs in Gujarat have robbed from me. One of them is a song I often sang with pride and conviction. The words of the song are:
Sare jahan se achha
Hindustan hamara...

** It is a song I will never be able to sing again.**

** Hindu Mob Sets Fire to Mosques in Northern India

March 17, 2002**

CHANDIGARH, India (Reuters) - A Hindu mob torched Muslim mosques and shops in northern India Sunday amid continuing violence in the country’s western Gujarat province.

Police in the northern state of Haryana said ** about 300 people surrounded
the house of a Muslim family following rumors it had slaughtered a cow,** an
animal Hindus regard as sacred.

Not finding the family at home, ** the mob torched two nearby mosques and three Muslim shops, ** an official in the police control room in Luharu town of Haryana’s Bhiwani district said.

“The situation is now under control and there was no loss of life,” Rajpal Singh, Bhiwani’s senior superintendent of police, told Reuters.

** Police said they did not find any evidence of an animal’s slaughter at the
site and the rumor appeared aimed at stirring trouble in the town, ** some
250 km (156 miles) south of Chandigarh, Haryana’s capital city.

A police official said the stone mosques were partially burned but not completely destroyed.

India, an officially secular nation, has been badly shaken by a wave of religious bloodletting that began with the death of 58 people who were killed when a train carrying Hindu devotees was torched by a Muslim mob in
Gujarat last month.

Over 700 people, most of them Muslims, have been killed in reprisals across the state triggered by the train attack.

GUJARAT SIMMERS

In Gujarat, which in the past three weeks has been home to India’s worst communal violence in a decade, police reported scattered incidents of looting and violence. ** One person was killed Sunday evening when police fired on a mob setting fire to a factory at Chandola,** about 12 miles from
Ahmedabad, the state’s main city.

P.C. Pande, Ahmedabad’s police commissioner told Reuters that arsonists set fire to a room inside another factory in the Madhavpura area of the city.

Police have imposed a curfew until Monday morning in five areas of Ahmedabad, Pande said.

The Press Trust of India news agency said two people were stabbed to death in the state’s Baroda district and added that ** several incidents of stone-throwing and arson were reported from many parts of the state. **

The latest upsurge in tensions comes against the backdrop of a stepped up
drive by hardline Hindu groups to build a temple on a disputed site in the northern town of Ayodhya where a mosque was razed a decade ago.

Hardline Hindus believe Hindu god-king Rama was born on the site of the mosque and want to rebuild a temple dedicated to him that they say was destroyed by Muslim invaders in the 16th century.

Saturday, ** some 500 Hindu hard-liners ransacked the legislature in India’s
eastern state of Orissa, breaking windows and damaging furniture,** to press their demand for building the temple in Ayodhya.

Very Good Nadia… Keep up the good work..

Thanks for using the Kafir terminology that describes almost any action done by Muslims.

P.s - Care to define what a “massacre” is? **And how the killing of 5 people constitutes a massacre that is comparable to the genocide of 5000 Muslims in India or over 10,000 Muslims in Afghanistan? **

And again, keep up the good work. Andhra, George Bush , Donald Rumsfeld , Ariel Sharon etc should be really proud of you

P.S - Sunnis in Iran suffer much more than the Shias in Pakistan. The way they are brutally persecuted there is not even closely funny. **Tehran, a city of about 12 million people, has 40 Christian Churches but NOT A SINGLE SUNNI Mosque.

Can you name one capital city in the world that does not have a Sunni mosque except Tehran? **

Let's discuss this without the sarcasm.

Thanks for using the Kafir terminology that describes almost any action done by Muslims.
I didn't know there was a monopoloy on words. Are you implying that in the history of humanity, no group of Muslims has ever massacred a group of non Muslims? We both know that's not true.

*P.s - Care to define what a "massacre" is? *And how the killing of 5 people constitutes a massacre that is comparable to the genocide of 5000 Muslims in India or over 10,000 Muslims in Afghanistan? **
It is not "just" those five Christians; minority religious groups in Pakistan have always suffered under Muslims, IM, and that is a fact.

*And again, keep up the good work. Andhra, George Bush , Donald Rumsfeld , Ariel Sharon etc should be really proud of you *
Please. The purpose of my discussing on Gupshup is not to please anyone. I am just here for rational discussions, not for making anyone "proud" of me, least of all Bush, Rumsfeld, Sharon, etc. That truly shows how little you "understand" me. Can we please cut out the personal comments because I don't think they contribute in any way positive to any discussion.

*P.S - Sunnis in Iran suffer much more than the Shias in Pakistan. The way they are brutally persecuted there is not even closely funny. *
Yes, some Sunnis in Iran are harassed, and I am certain Sunnis in Iraq are harassed as well, as are Christians in Egypt, Christians in Jordan, Hindus in the UAE, etc. etc. I don't mean to belittle anyone's experiences, but it occurs to every group - Muslims aren't the only ones at the receiving end of the stick.

*Can you name one capital city in the world that does not have a Sunni mosque except Tehran? *
You're right, I am unable to do that. Are you able to tell me the name of one Christian church in Pakistan whose members do not have some sense of fear when they attend prayer services? And can you tell me whether or not that is compatible with Jinnah's vision of Pakistan, and whether those Christians have the right to attend their services in the absence of fear - a fear that we, Sunnis, ourselves are responsible for creating?
