Re: Mary Kay Letourneau
sahar - Nice post. Iwonder about her emotional stability, too, but the difference is she made the decision as an adult and he as a child. Her emotional stability shouldn't matter.
I never undertsood why people always equate rape and sex. They are not the same.
No matter what you say, when you look at a child (12) you don't think, "wow, gotta have some". Whether a 12 yr old girl or a boy. He wasn't lucky, she was a predator.
Rape is a power play, an assertion of power over another, it has nothing to do with sex. Having sex with a child (what these underage people were) is rape. period. Nothing else. It doesn't matter if the victim is a boy or a girl.
Of course, he may have wanted to get lucky, but she was an adult and as a teacher, in a position of power over that child, was NOT in the postion to grant that particular wish of his. Anyone in a positon of power (teacher, parent, therapist, doctor, etc) over another individual should not take advantage of others, if they do, rules and laws should be in place (as they were here).
Now - here goes...........
Sheik Sahab - It is ok for a kid to have fantasies and dream this would happen to them, but there is a BIG difference between dealing with the emotions of fastasy and the emotions of an ADULT relationship being foisted apon you by a person in a position of power (such as the reprecussions of acting as an adult in a sexual situation - having kids, STD's, etc.).
Mo3 - I am curious about just one thing. Why on earth would you pack and move to another country? Child abusers are everywhere, regardless of country, age, religion, and gender. Would it be because of the "shame"?
Desibanda - Surprisingly in full agreement with you for a change. :)
Another thing this kid has is two children before the age of eighteen. Do you think he was emotionally ready for that? Having kids involves more than, "Hey, man, looky what I did..".
She deserved every bit of time she got. Not only that, I believe she got off easy because of the way people look at a crime like this.
