marvel comics geeks- report

so, I have not yet seen X3, DVD is sitting at ome but just have not had the time. did not see ghost rider because err I have to wait till its out on DVD.

but..

spiderman 3 is coming out this year, right

and I just saw an ad for fantastic 4, rise of the silver surfer.

I have not seen the FF movie either although i heard it was pretty weak. I do want to see it at some point in time though. I did not even get a chance to see the utimate avegners animated movie, but its on my list. missed electra too.

I a actually kinda excited to see silver surfer on the silver screen.

Any info on the story line, will we be introduced to Galactus and the Watcher etc? I mean would’nt you have to if you are introducing silver surfer?

and then punisher2 and hulk2 are in the works (which I do hope they do a better job this time around) then namor (submariner) is up and a wolverine movie.. also ironman out next year.

I am pretty excited

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Hey Fraudz I love all the Xmen films and anything Marvel. I hated the Hulk though it was rubbish. I love films like Blade and Spiderman 2 was awsome. I am so looking orwar to Ghost Rider. I have been reading Marvel for years and Love The characters Wolverine and The Punisher.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Bonjour Mon Ami,

You're in luck! As my wife stated, I am a die-hard Marvel fan :).

X3 -- Great movie, lots of action, lots of mutants, not entirely accurate but still fun. Didn't have the all-star directing of Bryan Singer behind it, certainly didn't have the plot depth the first 2 had but worth watching. Also, no Nightcrawler in 3, and no GAMBIT...grrrrrrrrr...(Although he was slated for the 3rd one, never came to fruition).

Ghost Rider -- It was a fun movie, I went in with low expectations, I was hoping for something closer to Blade given the storyline but it was all too PG13. I could've done without a hige chunk of the dialogue, it made even me cringe and I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to comic book adaptations. Sepcial effects were awesome, I would place it below the X-Men and Spider-Man movies, but above the likes of Daredevil, Elektra and Fantastic Four.

Spider-Man 3 -- Looks awesome, big fan of the first 2, and this one promises to deliver more actions, more villains and a ton of web-slinging actions! Really looking forward to it.

Fantastic Four 1 and 2 -- The first one was disappointing, most of the people I went with disliked it thoroughly, but like I said, I'm a rather forgiving person when it comes to comic book adaptations. I thought it was fun, not up to par with the best but it was still better that Daredevil and Elektra. I think you should watch it and make your own judgements, I would put it at the bottom of your list though. The casting was great but Jessica Alba was not right for the part at all, and I'm sorry to say she's in the second one too.

The second one looks awesome from what I've seen of the trailers, I'm definitely looking forward to it, I just hope it delivers. Mr Fantastic has been one of my favorite characters, he's also one of the most difficult to pull off on screen, but if they can make the Silver Surfer look awesome, it promises to be a great special effects movie if nothing else.

It is unlikely we'll get to see Galactus or the Watcher in this movie, but you never know. It's possible the Watcher will provide narration for the events, no idea to be honest. My guess is that the SS will be the focal point, big battles, throw in a reappearance of Dr Doom here and there and you've got yourself a good mix. I would imagine the story will end with the SS turning to good but warning them that the worst is yet to come, setting it up for the 3rd.

Elektra -- Don't watch it, you'll be disappointed beyond repair

Ultimate Avengers Animated -- I enjoyed both the 1st and 2nd animated movies, they're fun to watch, but they don't really bring you anything beyond reading a good graphic novel.

What's to come -- Punisher 2, I actually enjoyed the most recent Punisher movie, it was much closer to what I would expect from a Punisher movie, violence and all out crazy vengeance, none of this good and evil business. I'm not sure what they're going to do for a second one though, the initial tragedy of Frank Castle losing his family is really what spurred that movie on.

Hulk 2, I had heard initially that the guy from Prison Break and Blade Trinity was going to be playing Bruce Banner, but apparently that was an unfoundeded rumor. I think Eric Bana may have signed on again which I'm glad about, I enjoyed is portrayal and I think he's a great actor. The first movie I enjoyed, I think Ang Lee did a great job directing but I could've done without a lot of the strange camera movements. They also twisted the story somewhat, I'm hoping for something a little more comic like for the next one. i.e. HULK SMASH, big super villains and rediculous destruction.

Namor, you're correct, that is also in the works, I haven't really heard anything about it but I would enjoy a movie about him, perhaps leading to a Fantastic Four cross over :).

Wolverine and Magneto movies are both in the works. I think the Wolverine movie is farer along, Hugh Jackman is on board, I think we're delving into his past, pre X-Men, around his Weapon X, adamantium bonding timeline. Really looking forward to that. The Magneto spin-off movie I haven't heard too much about, just that it was in the works with the Wolverine one, I think it has potential, but probably not the appeal of Wolverine.

I'm looking forward to Iron Man, I think Robert Downey Jr is a good bit of casting and Gwyneth Paltrow has alot been cast. I think it's going to be closer to the Fantastic Four that the X-Men movies. I hope they do a good job with his armor, it can't be easy, I heard the biggest challenge was making it maneuverable as well as look awesome on screen. Should be fun!

This is defintely the time of comic-book fans. I love how popular these adaptations have become, I'm a big fan of Superman Returns, and the first 2 Blade movies I enjoyed very much. Hellboy I also liked and the 300 looks awesome! I'm not sure if you're into anything outside of Marvel but I would check those out if you haven't already. I believe Wonder Woman is also in the works.

I hope that helps, if you ever need to bounce off a fellow Marvel/Comic fan, you know where to come! :)

Woooooooo Remy wicked review but I must say I loved Daredeviel and Elektra but not FF4. I also hated Te Hulk as it was a really poor story.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Hey remy

thanks. I have some catching up to do.
btw I also saw the first fantastic four, the one that was never released. you have to see it if you can get your hands on it. very cheesy.

They just need to do justice to the characters. none of teh stuff like punisher 1, or nick fury with hasselhoff etc.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

There's an unreleased version of the Fantastic Four??? Like a really old one? I remember watching the old OLD Spider-Man movies, mam were they good for a laugh! There was an old Captain America movie too, I guess you can't expect a lot from the old ones because they don't have access to the special effects tech out these days. Still funny to watch though.

I will admit that Daredevil was better than Elektra, I'm just not a Ben Affleck fan though so I think that might have tainted my view.

That's why I love the directing of people like Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi, they don't just throw a ton of special effects in and hope it ends up making millions. They put a lot of thought into the story and depth into the characters.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

the unreleased fantastic 4 was done in the 90s. I got my mitts on it because I had a pal who was in film school and had contacts who got him a bootleg. let me see if I can find any info on that movie.

I recall hearing about an old cap'n america flick too, but nenver saw it.

One thing that saddens me is that in the need to appeal to mass market...which they need to do for commerical reasons, they sometimes dont do justice to the story line or pick the easier story lines than

would ne great to see a movie on the earthX stuff.

i dont really get to read comics much now, although i must admit I have picked up anything from marvel to dc to dark horse when i see em around.

This low-budget feature film, produced by Roger Corman and Bernd Eichinger, was intended for a 1994 release. Marvel comics eventually scrapped the idea in favor of the big budget version which was released in 2005.
In an interview with filmmaker Kevin Smith, Fantastic Four creator Stan Lee said that, unbeknown to the cast and crew, this movie was never intended to be released, and was made only because the studio who owned the rights to make a Fantastic Four movie would have lost the rights if they did not begin production by a certain date.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Fraudz -- I had no idea that movie ever existed, thanks for posting!

I do hear you about the mass-market appeal of this comic-book adaptations. If we take Ghost Rider for example, I know you haven't see it yet but if you've read any of the comics you know about the dark nature of this character. I have a few graphic novels and maybe one is dulled down because it was an earlier release but definitely the more recent books are extremely dark. He spends most of his time in hell and under the sadistic whims of Mephisto.

A small amount of this came through in the movie but it was not really close to the true tortured soul that Johnny Blaze is. I was happy when the Blade films took a different route, the R-rated road. I'm not an action junky and I don't only enjoy films that are filled with gore and violence. If anything, if it's too gory I just don't want to watch, horror films hold to appeal to me. However, when it's on a subject I know quite a lot about, I do feel like if done properly, the violence really adds to the depth of the character. If in the most recent Punisher movie, Frank Castle saw his entire family murdered and then simply walked around 'arresting' the culprits it wouldn't be any good, let alone believable. But to see him go to great lengths to avenge his family, that's what the character is all about.

Anyway, I ramble (I do that sometimes, especially when it comes to comics). I also don't buy issues of comics anymore at all, I tend to just wait and get the graphic novel when it comes out, which is 4-8-12 issues in one. I hate having to wait to get the outcome ;).

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

saw X3
so they sold their soul to try to make somewhat of a clean ending in case they dont have to do othe rmovies..yet left it open ended in case they want to do so.

Not impressed.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Unfortunately you are correct. In order to complete the trilogy they took certain "liberties" with the storyline. It's a strong franchise so they wanted to give a big finish to the story as well as allowing for the spin-offs and the potential to make more films if they decide.

It's show business man, all about the money I'm afraid.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

^ I liked X3 :snooty:

I think the portrayal of the female heroes is something that is worth exploring. I do think they could’ve done more with the Rogue – Jean Grey parallels.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Me too! What a coincidence! :).

From a Marvel - Geek point of view, they did take a few liberties with the storyline.

I never liked the way they portrayed Rogue or Storm.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Remy

which characters did you think they nailed and which they missed - in terms of casting

I think they did very well with
Prof X
Logan
nightcrawler
jean grey
juggernaut

so so on

iceman
magneto (ian mckellen is a great actor but magneto...i dunno)
cyclops
storm
kitty
mystique

horrible on

colossus
angel

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

Fraudz,

I pretty much agree with you list. I will say that I quite enjoyed Ian McKellen as Magneto, it's a very tough role to pull off, I think he did a great job.

I actually didn't like Juggernaught, his character was completely changed, wasn't a big fan.

Cyclops I actually really liked, I think he did a good job.

Storm I'd put in the horrible section along with Rogue, they were waaaaaaaay off with those two.

There's also a character in X3, called Kid Omega, the one who has those spikes that come out of his skin. That just plain didn't make sense, Kid Omega is a COMPLETELY different character, and this character is based on a mutant called Quill, why didn't they just call him that???? You never even hear him called by name!

Callisto was also a bit off, she was too young and her powers were wrong, she's supposed to have superhuman senses, kinda like Daredevil.

Colossus, yup, definitely way off, he wasn't even Russian! Angel, very disappointing, especially because I like the character so much, real shame.

Pyro I think was in the 'so so' area. He was fine, although he wasn't British like he's supposed to be, they captured his nature quite well though.

I also liked Multiple Man in X3. I wish there had been more of him, but then it might have been a "too many cooks in the kitchen" type of situation.

And naturally, the one character that was sorely missed:

GAMBIT!

On Captain America. Meh, he doesn't have the cache he used to have. To be honest they tried to bring him into the 21st century but he's too antiquated to be an appealing character anymore. He's died before, and we know in the Marvel Universe characters rarely stay dead.

Re: marvel comics geeks- report

I remember watching that old Captain America movie a couple years ago. Given the recent tragic news, I thought the following might help those who are still grieving.

Remy - crappy special effects or not, the first few minutes where Cap’n blasts out of that minivan racing and jumping around…it is awesome!
