Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

Is there such a place called Karela in India?I think thats where she is from.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

Yeah it is Kerala. I have been there a few times. Beautiful, lush green. One of the oldest muslims communities, lives in extreme harmony with the chirtians and buddhists and hindus. A model really...

Oh BTW, don;t take my joke in the prevoius post too seriously. I thought it would be interesting to show the converse of the bad "hindu" influences on poor pakistanis and their religion.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

gorays know we marry our cousins.. its when we dont - they get shocked.

Is keral south indian - Dubai is full of them./.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

lol thats a good one! anyway like u said you had a similar experience to the guy on BBC2…are u still married to the girl, more to the point are u happy?

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

The whole institution of marrying your cousins is sick and needs to be destroyed. It is medically a risk (chance of defective children rises to like 7% from 3% from normal couples), not to mention the biggest hinderance, which is moral. It is little more then incest, as bad as wedding a sister! First cousin-sister? whats the difference!

Didnt see the program, and didnt need to. Opposed this on all grounds for many years now. Its a sad indication of the Pakistani's community's failure to adapt and progress by absorbing that which is good in the host culture.

CATHOLIC VIEW ABOUT COUSIN MARRIAGES......

Bible... say a lot on "Cousin Marriage" ! The most important will be found, in LEVITICUS 18, which tells you all the relation ship you should not have with your relatives, but nothing about cousins !

In GENESIS 24:15, 48, 67, we learn that Isaac married his "first cousin once removed", Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, brother of Abraham.

In GENESIS 28:2; 29:10; 29:28, we learn that Jacob, son of Isaac married his FIRST COUSINS, Leah and Rachel, (yes both of them !)
Rachel & Leah, daughters of Laban, brother of Jacob's mother Rebekah.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, were all blessed.
By reading more attentively those chapters, we realize that Jesus has given Rebekah to Isaac, and Rachel & Leah to Jacob.

The Bible AND Jesus, ALLOW marriages between cousins !

They are living happily...that's the key people. Most of the people in US and UK marry for love and then what happens, divorce, beating and cheating. Atleast it is not going to happen over here. I have no opinion in marrying cousin but, if Islam has no objection and the marriage is going to work out go for it. Live a happy life.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

There are clear guidelines in Quran to whom you can not get married.
Surah An-Nisaa 4:23 : Prohibited to you (for marriage) are: your mother daughters sisters father’s sisters mother’s sisters; brother’s daughters sister’s daughters foster-mothers (who gave you suck) foster-sisters; your wives’ mothers; your step-daughters under your guardianship born of your wives to whom ye have gone in no prohibition if ye have not gone in; (those who have been) wives of your sons proceeding from your loins; and two sisters in wedlock at one and the same time except for what is past; for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

Some of the greatest minds in history were married to their first cousins. Einstein married his first cousin and had a healthy child with her. So did, Charles Darwin and produced an offspring who went on to become a great scientist in his own right. In modern america, cousin marriage is considered a taboo; the notion has its genesis dating back to the colonization of the americas, where european settles in an attempt to dehumanize the native americans and to distinguish themselves from them, singled out this practice and deemed it uncivilized, while similar practices in the old country were quite common.

Another ethnic/religious group, that indulges in this are the Jews.....

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

how do people do it??i guess if you never meet your cousins before..

but i remember being lil n playing hide n seek guys vs. girls w. my cousins, and even tho i dont like them ( as people) there still like my brothers. so why they hell would someone marry a cousin if they grew up toghter???

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

there are a lot or health risks involved and im too close to my cousin to get married to them. im kind of grossed out thinking about it but i guess it works for some folks.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

perhaps they marry them because they have no other choice presented to them.

or that its better to marry someone you know, you trust, your family trusts their family and you know that if there is ever a problem the whole family can help to sort it out.

(and NO im not married to my cousin, or thinking to)

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

I still did not got what you wanted to say, They should not, because they are cousins OR because they grew up togather. If it is because of the later reason then how do you explain love marriages, arn’t they spending so much time together and most of the cases growing up together.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

Could you please explain what type of health risks involved???
Its only if the family is suffering from a health problem through generation then it is recomended. If there would have been health risk then Hazrat Ali would not have got married with hazrat Fatima.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

well their are health risks for your children. if you have a recessive genetic disease in your family but neither your cousin or yourself show that genetic disease you still can have a possibility of having the recessive allele and therfore have higher chances of getting children with that disease. that is why many purebreed animals have genetic deformitis or other genetic diseases. because all the imbreeding highers the chances of getting these problems. if you still have trouble understanding recessive and dominant alleles and other gene stuff read a bio book.

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

no never - why?

Re: Marrying a cousin - 11.20pm BBC2 tonight

I know my sample size is small, but here is my observation of cousin marriages among our muslim friends here in Canada. 12 marriages between cousins, kids ok phyiically but not the sharpest pencils in the box. 3 unrelated marriages from totally different areas (like Karachi - Hyderabad dakkhan, Karachi - Dhaka, Mumbai - Peshawar), kids sharp as a tack. Draw your own conclusions, I have already drawn mine.
