So I just heard apparently anyone that wants to get married to a foriegner in the UK now has to have £18,000 or prove a salary of that ammount minimum to get married?
Is this just a proposed law or is it a law thats in place?.. just wanted to know in case I wanted to get the brother round…
Mind you I wish I payed more attention to these things when the old ladies mutter about them.
not sure, its not something I really looked into before, but people raised the subject and i'm kinda curious on how one would set about going this way if you were a gal, I mean guys its easy 18k aint soo much but it would be harder for gals who wanted to get thier desi guys over here.
I got told theres this new law in force with the 18k requirment and though blimey thats a bit steep... even for middle class folks.
A quick scan on google chacha proved fruitless appart from a few paper articles about the new law from july the 9th the rest is just mumbo jumbo to me so was looking for some answers here... supposed people in this forum might know more about the system than me.
Hahahah never knew a marraige visa would be so expensive, travel permits and visas are never this high.
I'm quite shocked to be honest and I think it's unnecessary. Previously, the sponsor had to go to some lengths to prove that they would be able to support the couple through savings and earnings anyway. And the spouse visa comes with the caveat of 'no recourse to public funds'. So it's not like someone can come here and start claiming benefits straight off the bat anyway.
Now, only people with a decent paying job can get married?
I think extending the period before indefinite leave to remain can be applied for would have been sufficient. So you can't apply for ILR before 5 years (instead of the previous 2)... that sounds okay to me because then the couple have to prove for longer that they are in a real relationship and managing to support themselves before the foreign spouse gets permanent stay.
It is not reasonable. That is way over minimum wage. There are plenty of hard working people earning less than this and now they cannot marry and have their spouse here with them? As I said, I think once the spouse is here, having to later prove that they are both working and supporting themselves before he/she gets permanent stay is acceptable.
Read the comments of the piece I linked. Theresa May is a joke.
Hi, this law came into place on the 9th of july. Once your spouse gets the visa they have to live in the uk for 5 years to prove your an actual couple, then they give you the indefinite visa. My uncle makes visa papers and confirmed this!
The rule is that u have to be earning 18,600 k per annum nt a penny less if u earn less than that u have to show minimum of 16.000 cash savings plus the shortfall in salary. Also its nt jusy abt wat u earn anymore theres a whole losd of new rules and yes ilr is now after 5 or 10 years depending on ur case
Yep the new earning threshold is £18,600 gross. It is quite steep considering but there was a possibility of it being around the £25,000 mark. No doubt it may slowly creep up eventually. There are ways of getting around it such as being on DLA or in receipt of Carer's Allowance in which case you go by the old system of having a certain amount of maintenance left to live on once council tax and accommodation are accounted for (approx £115 p/w). You could also use the EEA route which is less known, totally free in theory of application cost and no minimum income but needs commitment to move to another EU country and exercise treaty rights and work there for6 months+.
