Maratha - Mughal Wars

What was the reason behind these wars? Who was the ultimate loser due to these wars?

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Same reason - power. Recently I read a book that stated the marathas at one time had become mighty - post Aurangazeb I think.

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

But then who lead the Marathas? Because the Great Maratha 'Shiva ji' died in 1680, 23 years before the death of Aurangzeb in 1703.

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Just for you I went back to the book! Judith Walsh brf Hist of india

Pg 85
shivajis son sambhaji was killed 1689. But in 1724 mughals gave msrathas all of their territories for yearly tribute.

Series of Brahman Peshawar shaped marsthss using Michal techniques. Sjivajjs grandson shshu appointed balaji vidheansth as first peshwa

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

His son bsjirao I second Peshawar. By 1751 marsths confedaracy extended to rajasthan Delhi Punjab in north and ksrnatak and Tamil land to south

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Kindle fire has life of its own. It is happily changing non English words. So lots of mangled words

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

What the writer say about origin of these wars. Does he attribute it to the refuge given by Marathas to the rebel son of Aurangzeb?

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Right on Mr. Historian!

Pg 84- in 1681 rajput clans supported akbarII to usurp throne. Attempt failed Akbar II fled to maratha kingdom and then to court of Persian kings. Rest as stated above after aurangzrb attacked marathas and killed sambhaji. (Last 4 letters read haji

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

I read that there were some Maratha queens that also gave tough time to Mughals?

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

See what you did. I had to go back to the book again. Tara bail rajarams widow fought on behalf of her infant son. Rajaram was sambhajis brother.

On another note just saw khuda me pigeon. Forgot I had seen this ant 2 yrs back.

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Khuda ke liye

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Stupid kindle just changes words at will.

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

Only dead had seen the end of war:), the ultimate loser were Indians:D, as after toppling Mughals, Marathas lost to Afghans:D in third battle due to their overconfidence:D

Their Brahmin ministers usurped the power, they are called Peshwas, Another classic example of Fighting pundas annihilating their opponents:D

The confederacy reached Attock in Punjab of modern day of Pakistan:)

Shambhaji was tortured to death by Aurangzeb, it was aurangzeb's way of killing, first ask them to convert to Islam and if they don't agree, declare them bloddy Kafir and torture them to death, same was the plight of Guru Teg Bahadur and Banda Singh Bahadur too:)

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

*THIS *

and the guy is revered as hero(i use to be one of them as kid) who killed his own sibling and imprisoned his father....

in someway we can compare Aurangzeb to tipu sultan, use to be a very big fan of him especially with that sanjay khan serial on DD 1 that is until i met my mallu friend

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

:hmmm: Now whats the reality behind Tipu Sultan? Never thought that he would be as controversial as Aurangzeb.

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

I read that tarabai was daughter in law of Shiva ji and she had tussle with Bajirao Peshwa over the rule in beginning.

Re: Maratha - Mughal Wars

I hate Ashoka for same reason he too killed his siblings....
