Obey:
To carry out or fulfill the command, order, or instruction of.To carry out or comply with (a command, for example).
v.intr.* To behave obediently; Dutifully complying with the commands, orders, or instructions of one in authority.*

My wife tells me to this and that, I do it without question and step over my mother's rights knowingly or unknowingly, that is what the hadith is talking about. Obey is not in the sense you bow down to the wife or mother. (sometime it happens and that's sad)

Obviosuly there are tacts and manners and circumstances involved but that should be the general gist

I still don’t get why you people are using the word obey… i mean its not like the wife is ordering her husband to do stuff, or even the mother… I really don’t get it :konfused:

In my household, the only people who obey anyone are the children… adults have their own minds and don’t need to obey anyone, yes not even the wife. My husband does not command/order me to do stuff… he requests… like when he says “yaar, chai tau banaa do”… its a request, not an order.
Same with me, I request him to do things. This word obey totally offends my sensibilities.

Ok, you may use request.
But when that request becomes constant and strong*, it is no longer a request but an order. Anyway, obey was used as translation of that text I guess to signify/differentiate between a simple request and a strict demand.
