ISLAMABAD, 9 January 2005 — Malaysian Interior Ministry officials recently refused to meet a Pakistani government delegation that went there to hold negotiations on import of manpower from Pakistan.

The Senate Standing Committee on Labor, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis was told that the Malaysian government was pursuing its trade interests and giving importance to workers from India instead of Pakistan.

The committee meeting was presided over by Naeem Chattha and attended by senators including Enwar Baig. The disclosure was made by top officials of Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment and Overseas Employment Corporation.

They said despite their best efforts, the Labor Ministry officials were not entertained by the Malaysian Interior Ministry. The committee members asked Labor Ministry officials to inform them about the much publicized MOU signed between Pakistan and Malaysia for hiring of Pakistani labor.

The ministry officials said that the MOU was signed specifically to make Pakistan eligible to send its manpower to Malaysia as its name was not on the approved list of countries from where Malaysia imports manpower.

There was no mention of number of manpower to be imported as earlier claimed by ministers. The meeting was told that after the signing of the MOU not one person was sent to Malaysia as Kuala Lumpur was not keen to import manpower from Pakistan.

It said keeping the discouraging response of the Malaysian ministry, the government sent its own delegation to convince them to import labor from Pakistan. But no progress was made on this count.

The Labor Ministry officials felt that the Malaysian Labor Ministry was not inclined to import manpower from Pakistan. When a senator asked whether the Malaysian government was not importing manpower from Pakistan because of alleged Pakistani links to terrorists, the officials denied it. However, they told the meeting “we should not deal with Malaysia only because it is a Muslim country.”

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

I met some Arabs in the Gulf and they said they preferred Indians to Pakistanis because of their work ethic. Pakistanis were more prone to take time off during the days for prayers and during Ramadan.

The other reason is the perception of Pakistan. The news of Jihadis getting trained in Pakistan is affecting its image.

You will find in Dubai most of the professional and manegerial work is done by Indians.

Kuwait bans visas for Pakistanis

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

jaisa karo gay waisay baro gay : )

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Work ethics … because they take time off to pray … what load of crap … Arabs themselves take time off to pray and they encourage it. The schedule for most businesses change during Ramadan… I don’t buy that bs… If someone is taking advantage of the situation then that is an issue and should be addressed but I doubt if it is rampant as you make it seem like…

It is pretty insulting that the delegation was refused even a meeting, that shows that Pakistan is lacking in PR. Now instead of blaming the Malaysians and Kuwaitis we need to identify the reasons why this happened and figure out how we can make it better, that is the sign of a progressive nation and only way we can get out of this.

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Arabs may not work during Prayer times, but they expect their employees to work especially in offices.

Many times Pakistanis expect that Arabs would have a soft corner for them being Muslims but it is not so.

In Muscat, Oman when the Babri Masjid was demolished , many Pakistanis came out to have a protest march to the Indian consulate. They expected full support from the Omani government. Instead , the government was so upset with the Pakistanis that it locked hundreds of them in jail. Oman has very cordial relations with India.

Since then , Oman has reduced Pakistanis drastically in employement and is very strict in deporting illegal Pakistanis. Since June 2003, nearly 36,000 Pakistanis have been deported from Oman.

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Arabs governments have problems with freedom of speech … so I am not surprised …

As far as the part of prayer goes, I still don’t believe that since I have lived quite a bit in ME myself and I know that for a fact that they do not have objection when people go for prayers… I can see an issue if they go for prolonged time taking advantage of the privilege given by the employers…. You might be correct that some employers have issue with Pakistanis praying and I bet if it was a Gora Muslim who wanted to pray they will probably designate a driver for him to be dropped off and picked-up from the mosque… but again it is about image, pr, and the art of dealing with discrimination…

As far as soft corner thing goes I agree with you 100%

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Thousands of poor Baloch try to illegally enter Oman every year for oppertunities since they lack any in their own land, but they are also treated horribly. To date, the Pakistani government has done very little to help these Balochs.

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Pakistani government does not take any interest in it’s citizens. In Oman jails there are thousands of Pakistanis languishing , treated badly but the govt. does not care. Only some trusts like Ansar Burney trust has been trying to bring them back to Pakistan.

In Saudi, majority of the people who are given death sentence are Pakistanis (for drug trafficking or other drug related offences). But Pakistani govt. is not even bothered to see whether it was a valid execution. There is no trial.

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

This issue is not restricted to Baloch only… lack of oppotunities is a common issue which does not see any race, ethnicity, or region boundries in Pakistan

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

problem is that the govt. is not people’s govt. … for a govt. to work for people it has to be people’s govt. hence the need for stable and strong true democratic govt. where leaders feel the pressure to work for those who send them to the offices

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

This has been happening for last 30 years even during elected Bhutto, Sharif’s govt. This is not something new during Musharraf’s regime.

I think Pakistan does not want to upset Saudi Arabia by launching a protest and affecting “BROTHERLY RELATIONS”. (“TIME TESTED RELATIONSHIP” as the govt. describes)

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

I am not pointing to just Mushy's govt. ... Pakistan has had a rocky relation with democracy since day 1 ... a true democratic system is yet to be realized in this nation ... and it will be one day....

Brotherly Relations is important it is part of the PR that Pakistan has to do but not at the cost of its citizens... so they need to come up with better strategy that does not compromise on brother relationship or the rights of its citizens... that is where politics come into play...

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

indians work like dogs, get treated like dogs by the arabs that they otherwise hate so much. Not all Indians are high level professionals most of the time arabs would still have an arab or some brit or american driving the "rafeeq" and "miskin" workers. The issue is more with the lower level employees which India supplies in quite large volumes and they are open to be exploited by arabs because arabs know that even with the much touted economic boom in India, there are always plenty of people who would rather work for riyals and dirhams even if it means being treated like crap. Enjoy.

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

so essentially, pakistanis being rejected is actually a good thing?

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

anyone ask Malaysia why?

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Oh sorry let me make it simple. No its not a good thing at all, it closes the doors of opportunities to many Pakistanis who need them for survival or advancement.

I was expanding on the other reasons why indians as well as filipinos etc are well received in the arab world for the lower level jobs.

We all know the intellect and abilities of indians in professional roles and how they have made a mark for themselves, but at the same time lets not ignore the other reasons why the workers are in demand in middle east.

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

:). That is precisely what would happen, all while the gora get’s paid 10 times more and gets executive level housing!

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Of course it is cheap labor. But a Pakistani laboror would be much cheaper than a Indian, because of the currency value, right.

37.-? Ruppes, not much of a fiscal knight in shining armour!

I still am appaled at this lack of respect for common courtesy and diplomatic authority. What a pitty!

Re: Malaysia refuses to employ Pakistanis

Incorrect, the payment is still in local currency, but in general indian labour is willing to work for lesser money, the filipinos work for even less.
