Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

So, Muslims now have copyright over the use or word “Allah”?

Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’ - DAWN.COM

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian appeals court on Monday upheld a government ban against the use of the word ‘‘Allah’’ to refer to God in non-Muslim faiths, overruling claims by Christians in this Muslim-majority nation that the restriction violates their religious rights.

‘‘Allah’’ is the Arabic word for God and is commonly used in the Malay language to refer to God. But the Malaysian government insists that ‘‘Allah’’ should be exclusively reserved for Muslims because of concerns its use by others would confuse Muslims and could be used to convert them.

Malaysia’s Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities have often complained that the government infringes in their constitutional right to practice religion freely, accusations the government denies.

Monday’s judgment in the Court of Appeals overturns a decision by a lower court nearly four years ago that ruled against the government ban. Anger over that ruling sparked a string of arson attacks and vandalism at Malaysian churches and other places of worship.

The legal dispute stems from efforts by the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia to use ‘‘Allah’’ in its Malay-language weekly publication.

Roman Catholic representatives deny there are attempts to convert Muslims and say the government ban is unreasonable because Christians who speak the Malay language had long used ‘‘Allah’’ in their Bibles, literature and songs before authorities sought to enforce the curb in recent years.

Judge Mohamed Apandi Ali, who led a three-member appeals court panel, said the use of ‘‘Allah’’ was ‘‘not an integral part of the faith and practice of Christianity.’’ ‘‘It is our judgment that there is no infringement of any constitutional rights’’ in the ban, he said. ‘‘We could find no reason why the (Catholic newspaper) is so adamant to use the word ‘Allah’ in their weekly. Such usage if allowed will inevitably cause confusion within the community.’’

The Rev. Lawrence Andrew, editor of the Catholic newspaper, The Herald, said they plan to appeal Monday’s verdict in Malaysia’s Federal Court, the nation’s highest.

‘‘We are greatly disappointed and dismayed,’’ he said. ‘‘This is unrealistic. It is a retrograde step in the development of law in relation to the fundamental liberty of religious minorities.’’

Yes it is a copyright. Hope that sorts out that confusion.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

^ yeah, very much like Coca Cola has rights to its products. This is what a "scholar" said in a Pakistani talk-show sometime ago.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

That scholar was right according to the Malaysian legal system.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

I am sure the Malaysians would keep in mind that any intolerance in te country would destroy Malaysia as there are over 40 % non Muslims in the country.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’

verse 1:2

“All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds

who are we to limit His domain and make Him God of only Muslims or Arabs. There is no harm in the use of the word “Allah” by others if they use it to refer to “The God”. The point of objection is valid if this term is used insultingly or for calling idols etc.

Please remember that cognates of the word “Allah” exist before Islam in other religions like Judaism. What will happen if followers of Judaic faith sue Muslims on the copyright of words like “Amen” and “Salaam” as its cognates existed before Islam.

"Shalom (שָׁלוֹם) (Sephardic Hebrew/Israeli Hebrew: shalom; Ashkenazi Hebrew/Yiddish: sholom, sholem, sholoim, shulem) is a Hebrew word meaning peace, completeness, prosperity, and welfare and can be used idiomatically to mean both hello and goodbye" (wikipedia)

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

If it's a violation of Malaysian law then sure they can sue. Its a legal matter and refers to their jurisdiction.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

Idiotic. Why not educate Muslims so that they don't get 'confused' instead?

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

Arab Christians use Allah all the time. I have never seen any Muslim scholar being offended by them. This confusion theory is ridiculous.
Muslims lose nothing if other people use the word 'Allah'. This debate is trivial. Makes no sense.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

Rab ul alameen nor Rab ul muslimeen, thats wnother thing if we consider that Christians follow a different God.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

Dumb law that is reactionary and short visioned.

What if some country made a law that muslims cannot use the words Jesus, Buddha, Ram etc ?

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’

..and now islam is safe have a great eid:k:

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’

:smack:…no wonder no one takes Muslims seriously. Way to go.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

This law can be easily challenged if non-Muslim of Malaysia have intelligent and courage. What they have to do is:

Say in front of many that they worship Allah who is their Rab. Once in court, in front of the judge also they claim that they just said they worship Allah who is their Rab. Then they should ask the judge that if Judge thinks that Allah created them or not and if judge thinks that Allah created them then how can they not worship Allah?

If judge says that certainly Allah created them and is their rub then law would become defunct.

If judge says that Allah did not created them and is not their rub then they can start campaign that judge denies Allah created them and that Allah is Rab of all his creation, and thus judge became apostate.

If judge says that even though Allah created them still they cannot call the one who created them Allah, then they can start campaign that judge stops creation to worship their creator, and hence became apostate and friend of Shaitan.

Non-Muslims can do ‘same excercise’ with parliamentarians who votes for such law, that if they consider that non-Muslims are also created by Allah and that Rub of non-Muslim is Allah … then how they can deny creations (Non-Muslims) from worshiping their creator (Allah) … and if they are doing that, then certainly they are doing crime against Allah … and thus became apostate and friend of Shaitan.

Note: To be Muslim is not just about worshipping Allah (that non-Muslims can do too). One becomes Muslim by declaring that Prophet (SAW) was Prophet of Allah (something non-Muslim do not do). Hence worshiping Allah or calling creator by the name Allah should not be controversial nor any human (Muslim or non-Muslim) have right to stop anyone using that name … and if anyone would do that then that person (group or people in authority) is nothing but evil and friend of Shaitan.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

Why are Christians/Budhists or any other non-Muslim even using the word Allah? Deception? Don't they already have terms to refer to their gods in their religions?

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

^No deception, just common sense. Quraish Arabs also used the word Allah for the creator, and later Muslims also started using that. What Malaysian government is doing is such evil that even Kuffars of Mecca missed the idea. If Kuffars of Mecca at time of Prophet (SAW) were as evil then they could have also made a law that Muslims god is different then their, so Muslims should not use word Allah to remember their God. But it seems Kuffars of Mecca were more decent and less evil then present day Kharjees who are creating such fitna, fasad, and demanding such steps all over Muslim world.

Fact is that, Allah is Arabic word for God ... or ... The god. It is not name but a symbol that represents creator, so anyone can use that. Just like language does not belong to a person, community, or religion ... 'word' of any language also does not belong to a person, community, or religion ... and thus, no person, community or religion have any right to impose restriction on use of any word from any language on people (regardless of people belong to their community and group ... or to different community and group).

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

I suppose they have better things to do than squabble over idiotic decrees of holy men.... like for instance improve Malaysia's economic growth.

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can't use 'Allah'

How would you like it if Europe decides that Muslims cannot use the word 'God' because that confuses Christians?

Re: Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’

Allah is not exclusive to Muslims, it had been used much before Islam came into existence. Decisions like these just make muslims the laughing stock of the world. I don’t know why Muslims are so insecure. Islam has spread only due to its inclusiveness.

On ‘Allah’, we know better than the Arabs - Malaysiakini
