Her most memorable quote is: “It is time for the women of Afghanistan to be unveiled, and for Afghanistan to rise again and be the great nation we remember it to be”

The daughter of a former medical student who lost a leg while fighting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Malalai Joya was 4 years old when her family fled Afghanistan in 1982 to the refugee camps of Iran and later Pakistan. After the Soviet withdrawal, Malalai Joya returned to Afghanistan in 1998 during the Taliban’s reign. As a young woman she worked as a social activist and was named a director of the non-governmental group, Organisation of Promoting Afghan Women’s Capabilities (OPAWC) in the western provinces of Herat and Farah.

…When her time came to make her 3-minute statement, she tugged her black headscarf over her hair, stepped up to the microphone, and with emotional electricity made the speech that would alter her life.

After she spoke, there was a moment of stunned silence. Then there was an uproar. Male mujahideen, some who literally had guns at their feet, rushed towards her, shouting. She was brought under the protection of UN security forces.

In a nation where few dare to say the word “warlord” aloud, Joya had spoken fiercely against a proposal to appoint **high clergy members **and fundamentalist leaders to guide planning groups. She objected that several of those religious leaders were war criminals who should be tried for their actions—not national heroes to influence the new government.

Despite the commands of Assembly Chairman, Joya refused to apologize…

On May 7, 2006, Malalai Joya was physically and verbally attacked by fellow members of parliament after accusing several colleagues of being “warlords” and unfit for service in the new Afghan government. “I said there are two kinds of mujahedeen in Afghanistan,” Joya told the Associated Press. “One kind fought for independence, which I respect, but the other kind destroyed the country and killed 60,000 people.” In response, angered lawmakers shouted death threats and threw empty plastic water bottles at Joya, who was shielded by sympathetic colleagues

In response to such threats, Joya continues to speak out against those she believes to be former mujahedeen in Afghanistan, stating:

“Never again will I whisper in the shadows of intimidation. I am but a symbol of my people’s struggle and a servant to their cause. And if I were to be killed for what I believe in, then let my blood be the beacon for emancipation and my words a revolutionary paradigm for generations to come.”

To be a woman growing up in Afghanistan under the Taliban and to survive is in itself a major feat.** To be so lucky as to become literate in a place where girls are shrouded and denied even fresh air is close to a miracle. **To start underground schools and educate girls under the noses of turbaned, self-appointed defenders of virtue and forbidders of vice is truly extraordinary.

But to get a seat in parliament and refuse to be silent in the face of the Taliban and warlord zealots shows true fiber. When Malalai Joya did this, her opponents responded in the usual way: expulsion from parliament, warnings, intimidation and attempts to cut her life short. She has survived all of it.

In the loya jirga, people were shouting "murg bur communism" when she had given her speech. So they were calling her communist.
Communist or not, she was right. From what I understand, she was not just against Taliban but also against other warlords from Northern Alliance.

Very very controversial figure in Afghanistan. People specifically local NGOs for women's rights and international Women's NGOs have made the comments to me personally that she is way too much on media and very little on substance.

Depending on what you think you either love her or hate her.

Here is what Mullah Muhammad Umar had to say about her and the Loya Jirga of 2003 setup by the invaders:

**All the delegates of the Loya Jirga were criminals as rightly pointed out by a young lady [Malalai Joya]. She showed the courage of telling the delegates that they were murderers of innocent people of Afghanistan and they should be dragged to the national and international courts of justice. The Loya Jirga is a US ploy to derive legitimacy for the Karzai government. We denounce it.

I am and so is every true Muslim… Jihad isn’t all about guns

Not all Mujahids are fighters on the battlefield.

But anyhow without getting too deep into religion Jihad is mandatory for all Muslims.
