Hi Guys .. I have been looking at the all the major retailers in the UK selling Cot Bumper and Quilt cover sets .. but the designs are so pathetic and dont collaborate at all with the prices they are being sold at …
I am considering making it myself , at least that way i will have the choice of color range i want and probably do some nice floral fabric painting to give it that decent , stylish look ..
Am I being over ambitious? has anyone here made their own cot bumpers?
That's a great idea CB. I would look into saftey standards too while making my own baby bedding. Like what kind of material to use, if its breathable. Lot has been said about saftey of baby bedding. You may want to search the internet to get ideas.
Yaaayyy for the mom of the century!!! Atleast Mom of GS should be the title given to you
I am always motivated by the ideas from you ma sha Allah. I can forsure relate to the feelings behind plan of making these bumpers and quilts, which is, you simply relish the fact its going to be for YOUR BABY!!! I wish I could follow too, but dont know how to sew, so would just depend on the ready made stuff available in the market. Here I have this kinda edge that I can have from branded to banal desi stuff available in the markets so I hope to have all I would want, hopefully. Just that I havent got started as yet. DO keep sharing whatever you are planning and making. Its always been an inspiration
I have made fitted crib sheets and pillow covers. I don't like an over crowded crib so kept things simple . But you can certainly sleep all those things , I am planning on making a mai tai baby carrier next InshAllah. A lot of baby stuff is very doable if you have time and basic sewing skills.
All the unused receiving blankets are now being turned into bibs and burp cloths
Mirage , here’s some news : I have hardly got any sewing skills
But I know that necessity is the mother of invention and hence I thought getting an absolutely average looking bumper set at £55 , I would rather try my hand at making it myself , at least I will be happy with the colors and design

and to that effect- i just thought i'd throw in there that in the US they recommend that you don't use the bumpers in the baby bed- they're a suffocating hazard
not sure if it's been advised in the UK or not, but just thought i'd throw that out there since it's a safety issue and i'm sure you want your baby to be safe as possible :)
Thanks luvblingz.. yes safety is the key element here.
Actually they dont advise against the use of bumpers in the UK, I have checked it , as long as the basic health and safety is kept in mind, like using breathable material , not making them too thick etc ..
My plan is to get some wadding pieces from a craft shop and some cloth of my own color choice .. wadding pieces are usually very breathable material and arent thick at all. I dont intend to use ordinary foam etc they are a health hazard.
Or another shortcut is to get a cheaper bumper from ikea like for £10 and then just prepare a cloth cover and perhaps some embroidery or fabric paint and there you have it , a bumper of your choice :)
Yea No PAINT CB. Embroidery, yes. But then do you know embroidery? My mom wants to do some on my kid’s dresses or something. She just said today she would go buy some clothes to do that
yeah Embroidery is easy … I did it long ago when once when i was a kid and had come home for vacations .. my mother taught me i am sure i can manage , its not rocket science .. gonna get some color fast thread from lahore , husbands going soon and i have a list of things to give him
I did this for Noor.
I made so many things....blankets (both crochet and other). I made all the desi stuff that my grandmother used to make. And now they are all keepsakes....stored away with a local newspaper from the day that she was born.
There is an easy way......if you don't want to do everything from scratch, purchase a set and then make slip covers for it. This way you don't have to worry about getting the stuffing to fit perfectly inside etc, etc. and you will have the pattern and the colours that you want! -- woops....just noticed that you mentioned this idea already~!
He can get thins for quarter the price and such gorgeous designs in pak… My mom did some of midget’s nursery shopping from zubeidas and baby shop… the variety was awesome..
Swaddling sheets, cute dabric if uwanna make the stuff from sxratch, mittens and cotton topis,
Jhablay (wrap cotton undershirts), booties, head pillow, thikoni (the circular gao takya babies have ), oh gosh ere is so much more… Alas…weight allowance
I guess the safety issue is when they are too little and the risk of SIDS and all that with blankets and quilts.I used cotton blankets and receiving blankets when mine was little.
Lusi my daughter's quilt also rests on her crib.It is for me to look at and consider it pretty. She hates it...!
CB...If your husband is going to Lahore can you ask him (or anyone there) to shop for nursery bedding? My mom got a lot of stuff for me and it was all really nice. They sell really good quality stuff and nice prices. So that might be an option....
