Re: Making My Life Easier
Apart from using a good quality peeler, I can't see an alternative. Especially when it comes to ginger and the nobbly bits. Although I have seen some blenders/chopping gadgets which peel potatoes.
Re: Making My Life Easier
I dont mind peeling potatoes…
Ginger,well that’s another story.![]()
If I need too much like for a few dishes I am making together,I peel it with a vegetable peeler…cut it into a few pieces and chop in the mini prep food processor…works great…!!
If I just need a little (or dont want to wash the food processor cup),after peeling the ginger root with with the peeler I keep on shaving it with the peeler into thin slices and then slice its twice at right angles(hope that makes sense).
And if I get one of those roots which refuse to be chopped any possible way…I just add it to the dish as is…jiss kay bite main aa gaya us ki kismat…
…(just kidding)
Re: Making My Life Easier
when you are free one afternoon. Get a whole load of ginger and just peel using a sharp knife or good peeler...then blend it with water and freeze it as ice cubes.. Your life will be easy for the next 3 months
Re: Making My Life Easier
do we HAVE to add garlic and ginger in food?!?!
I dun have patience for it so either I use a pre-made paste or nothing at all if I dun have a paste at home :(
I do the same and for some strange reason it always ends up in my plate. ![]()

same happens with me...sighs
Re: Making My Life Easier
On foodnetwork, they say best way to peel ginger is use a small spoon. Anyway, I have never tried it. I just peel it with my good ol’ knife. Same with potatoes, I just peel them with my cutting knife, sometimes I use peeler too. I love peeler for carrots, it does the best peeling job with carrots.
Lol Gia ![]()
Yes, I don’t have the patience either, I also use ginger garlic paste from store. My dad doesn’t like me cutting onions, so he has started brining me some onion paste from desi store. ![]()

using a peeler works faster than peeling by knife. For peeling garlic...if you heat the gloves in the microwave for about 9-11 seconds, they become softer and skin practically slides off.
Re: Making My Life Easier
A good peeler dies the job for both.
Now make sure you get a peeler where the blade isn't moveable. I hate those types.
Re: Making My Life Easier
make a slice around the potato, but dont actually cut it in half. throw it into a pot of water and let it boil for about 15 minutes. have a bucket of ice water for after the potatoes are boiled. plop the potatoes into the bucket of ice water, and watch them come out peeled.
the spoon is perfect for ginger, scrapes the skin off easy and you dont lose the nutrients directly under the skin by overpeeling.
Re: Making My Life Easier
wow ther’es nutrients under the skin ![]()
u know i’ve tried boiling potatoes before and it was easier but i was told that its not as tasty as if u do them by scratch.
I already use a peeler but its still annoying…idk if it’s a cheap/crappy one though.
So what exactly should I look for in a good peeler?
ladies ....
forget any sort of peeler or knife for your ginger...use a spoon.... the skin just slides off....it works like a charm..ever since I heard of this tip I have been using it.
Another thing I do, since I don't like ginger garlic paste from the store (too many preservatives) ... I simply take equal quantity of ginger and garlic... peel and grind them to a paste. I pour a little olive oil in a jar ....pour the ginger garlic paste and then pour a little more olive oil on the top... this jar i keep in the fridge and it stays fresh for a month or two. The other half I put in ice cube tray and then put them in a ziploc bag.
Makes cooking a breeze and no more ginger and garlic pieces in my or anyone else's mouth.
Re: Making My Life Easier
good idea to freeeze the ginger garlic paste on ice cube tray
Re: Making My Life Easier
sara the peeler should be really really sharp. spend an entire day peeling garlic and ginger and then blend it and throw it in an empty yogurt container or plastic bag in the freezer. it will like last a year.
Soak the ginger in salted water and then peel it with a peeler.. I chop-off the knobbly bits to get an even surface for grating or chopping.
Re: Making My Life Easier
use peeled ginger and use unpeeled potatoes, lots of flavour in potatoes' skin.
Re: Making My Life Easier
I peel ginger with a spoon.......heard it on food network and it's as if they are meant to be!
try it.
As for potatoes....definitely invest in a good peeler. (I tried finding an image of the one I use but no luck)
Re: Making My Life Easier
Why peel at all? Use those red(for salads, roasting, steaming) or white potatoes(all purpose), they are not required to be peeled.
:k:
