Have any of you guys got your makeup done at a makeup counter?
Like MAC or Chanel or Dior.
How does it work? From my understanding you have to buy a certain amount/price worth of products and they do your makeup?
What were your experiences like?

well if you go normally and just want them to try some products, it's free. you can do this to get an idea if you want that particular MUA to do your makeup or not. then you need to book an appointment and there is a min purchase policy. years ago it used to be £40.
i don't usually do this but when i first got into buying proper makeup and wasn't sure about products, this really sweet mua ended up doing my full makeup and it was really nice so i left it on for when i went out later.

I did once at a MAC counter and was NOT happy with it AT ALL. I told the MUA not to touch my face and that's all she did...touch my face throughout the process. Result was...I was as red as a tomato in a matter of 30 minutes...both cheeks were so irritated I had to wash my face asap.
This was years ago though and things have changed since then.

Stoppit is right. Sometimes they would do it for free but most of the time they do ask you to buy a product at least. What you can do is, get your makeup done with whoever you like, purchase a product. Go the next day and return it :D

When I was looking for MAC foundation a few years ago I made the MUAs in Selfridges and Harrods put foundation on me and then just took the numbers from them. The Harrods guys was pretty pissed but he couldnt make me buy anything.
A good few years ago this really lovely MUA at Bobby Brown in Fenwicks showed me how to do a smokey look by applying it on my cousin, she told us to come for a tutorial and we had booked appoitments but had to cancel last minute, I forget why, anyway I went to her to cancel and she gave me a free goody bag anyway. I still have the eyeshadow she gave me. Bless her.
I think they will do specific looks (either only eyes or only face) for free depending on where you go, how much time they have and how nice you are to them.
Just don't get suckered into buying anything. I have a few times. Not good. :(

No, not necessarily.. When I was in my teens I had it done a few times with Chanel, Clarins, Clinique.. I was never pressured into buying anything, I would just be nosying around and asking questions and they would just offer.. I used to get tons of free samples as well :D
I see a lot of girls getting their makeup done in the beauty hall in Selfridges so if you're looking to try it out that would be a good bet :)

I've had this done recently at MAC and at Bobbi Brown. You usually have to make an appointment in advance - especially if it's on a weekend. MAC charge £25 and you get to spend that on products afterwards, and Bobbi Brown charge £30
I've had good experiences, you just tell them what the occassion is, what colour your outfit is, or you can take a picture of what you want. The last time I had it done I needed to stock up on some products anyway so it felt like I was buying the products and getting my party make-up done as a bonus.
Some of the other make-up counters will give you a full make-up look without the charge/having to buy anything, it depends on how busy the counter girls are I guess. My sister and I got our full faces done at the Laura Mercier counter once because the mua was bored of standing around and no-one buying her products!

Mac is one brand which no matter what country they have their store in, their staff is always so well trained and customer friendly :k:

Do bear in mind that occasionally MUA at the counters are a little snobby.... The attention they give you depends on how you dress and carry yourself...

Speak with an Arabic accent and carry £50 notes with you if you're going to Selfridges in London, they won't care if you have the hijab on.

I had makeup done once some years ago at a Benefit stand. I just asked the lady i was unsure of what might look good on me and she offered to demonstrate a few products. It was free and there was no pressure on me to buy anything. Though like a schmuck i did of course.

If you're going for the fun of it, then free makeup is fine. But if you want if for a function, most people will want to test the look and the mua first (which can be free).... but then to guarantee the same person at the day and time you want, you will need to book an appointment and if it's MAC, they will almost inevitably charge against the the purchase of some products.
