I have one blonde little question though...the people who have been asked to vacate their homes and whatnot, where do they go? Do the government provide shelter and transport if people do not have their own transport or holiday homes that they can go to?
Captain1, goodluck fidning a hotel room, there is nothing available all the way upto lewisville/louisville..its north of dallas… your best bet will be the panhandle…
The government will provide "refuges of last resort", that is, if you are unable to go stay with friends relatives, or someplace out of town, then they will have shelters, either in the city, or you will be bused to a safe location. Houston is a kick-butt town, they will do this right, and the evacuation will be done well. Google up web casts of houston TV stations and watch...
Government (local Govt. for the liberals and politically challenged) provides the transport to a designated shelter (also provided by the govt.) for example, Galveston residents are being taken to Huntsville by buses to a shelter provided by the state Govt. (PA and other dems, see how this works…maybe you want to show this kind of planning to Nagin and Blanco)
Well, my Dad doesn't wana leave cos he thinks there is no point as we will just be sitting in traffic, and plus risks of looting in the house and business, to which i said,"hello, better than being dead!"...but then he goes that me, Mum and my little brother shud go to Dallas then...but my Mum won't leave my Dad behind and i don't wanna leave either of them behind :(...plus, if we do drive and just keep driving then i'm scared we'll be stuck cos if we run out of petrol, there might not be any stations open u know...i duno wot we're gona do...
There is still plenty of time to leave. Texas will have plenty of National Guard troops to protect the property. Tell your mum that if dad doen’t want to go, that it is up to her to protect the kids.

Lewisville is right here, almost next to where slow-Rita will meet FortWorth, why’d one want to go there? Louisville KY? darn, I was thinking of going there
Captain1, Dallas is only going to get a lot of rain and some wind...not hurrican force winds...you are probably safe...you may see some flash flooding at the most...now dont scare me about the lewisville like that all my life treasures are going to be there for the weekend....
Kaleem: FYI Lewsiville is 35mile northeast of Fort Worth. IF Rita hits shores at Cat-4 THEN DFW might receive Rita in downgraded category 1 but if it goes up to Cat5 when it hits shores then risk is higher. With Cat-1 the winds are expected to be 50-74mph.
Just received this in email:
Crimefighters- this is from our Emergency Management Director at the City of Richardson. Notice the suggestion to stock up on water and batteries, and to fuel up your vehicles. He is expecting we'll get some spin-off from hurricane Rita, so we should plan for possible power outages due to high winds and possible tornadic activity.
Hurricane Rita is now a Cat 4 (131-155). The models used to track hurricanes show that the probable impact will be near Matagorda. With this being the general location of landfall, the strongest side of the storm will severely impact the greater Harris County (Houston) with destructive winds, very heavy rains, and tornadoes.
After landfall, the track of the storm is projected to move over Dallas - Fort Worth area. If the storms reach land at a Cat 4, by the time it reaches DFW, it should be a CAT 1. We will experience wind gusts at time greater than 50 mph up to 74 mph. The Metroplex will experience the affects of Hurricane Rita by Saturday afternoon. We can expect periods of heavy rains and possible tornadic event associated with the rain bands. I would suggest that you stock up on batteries and potable waters. Fuel up your vehicles.
I strongly suggest you monitor the weather channel or your news station for the latest information in this changing event.

here is a list of affected zip codes, dallas/fort worth guppies can look up their zip codes and see if they are anywhere near the danger zone. http://www.khou.com/weather/stormsurgemap.htm
I have lived in New England for the past 20 years. We frequently have noreasters that blow 50+ mph. That is livable. It is very uncommon for a storm to hit at cat 5, because the water near the shore cools, and the energy level goes down in the storm.
But it is absolutely impossible to say if it is safe. When in doubt, get out.
Dallas is 289 miles north of Galveston (where Rita lands)… according to one of the emails (posted above) Cat4 becomes Cat1 and Cat5 probably becomes ~Cat2 … I hope it becomes Cat0.5 when it reaches DFW :halo:
