If you were in Pakistan (or if you already are), and you had a choice - send your kid to an english-based medium school vs. a madrassah, what would you pick?

English medium school. i can safely teach Islam to my kids at home.

English medium or convent for full time schooling.
Kids who attend English medium schools also attend Madrasseh primarily to learn how to recite Quran.
however, in some sects they send their kids to their Madrassahs for Islamic education along with sending them to private English medium schools. that’s kind of important for them. and its not English School VS Islamic Madrassah, its English School AND Madrassah both. (sects like shia and bohris)
then there are some people who are religious minded, and they send their kids to these very hi-fi fusion schools where they offer Cambridge curriculum along with the Islamic education with the options for Hifz as well.

I send my kid to an Islamic school who follow the O/A level system. Love it.

I am sending my kids to madressa.
Just like there are good and bad schools, same goes for madressa.

In a muslim country, it doesnt make sense why kids be sent to unsolicited mudrassa. If they are proper , legal Islamic schools they are teaching Islam plus the other subjects then yes I see no harm in sending kids there.
But for a country where molvi’s and scholars have such shaky reputation , its better to be safe then sorry !

Why would anyone send their kid to a madrassa? It is just another institution in which a pompous religious figure will exert their warped view or interpretive nuances onto your child. If you consider it so important to be a Muslim then educate yourself and teach your child. Part of Islam’s appeal was that it broke away from the institutions and their decrees, which was prevalent in many religions, including Catholicism.

Depends. I went to School in the morning then for tajwid and some other classes in the evening but I was taught Islam by my parents not some molvi.
You can do both. No harm in it.

As Bao mentioned, there are some good, in fact great madrasa in Pakistan. Daroul uloom Karachi, Ahsanul Madaris, and even controversial Binori town madrasa are pretty good. It’s not whether you want to pick madrasaa vs regular school. It’s what you want your kid to become once he grows up. You can’t produce a doctor or engineer out of a madrasaa, but in the same way, you can’t produce an aalim or mufti out of a regular school

Those living in karachi can visit darul uloom karachi/Jamiaturrasheed or Madressa ibn abbas to see how a good madressa looks like. There are madressas who do not run on chanda (like madressa ibn e abbas whose owner Dr amjad bears the expenses ) and where teachers promoting sectarianism are terminated.
As far as i am concerned i think it is haq of children to teach them deen including environment supporting deen, and this is what i am focusing on.
It’s tough to attract a non sectarian crowd to a madrasaa with that name, but hats off to dr amjad for using his own money for such a great khidmat.

i have done one year islamic course at darululoom karachi few years back, and then i realised why madressas are not that bad.

Images of darulifta are old, now their dar ul ifta is fully computerized as they built one in bespoke software for fatawa management.

all teachers at madressa montessory are aalimat+qualified montessory course, beating a child is not allowed in any class plus they have taken an oath that parents will not beat children as they think it destroys personality of kids. Reverts and Arabs are also amongst teachers in bigger classes. There is no fees when kid is doing hifz.
I guess what I was trying to say but could not find words that with madrasa by the name of ibne abbas, Sunni brothers would assume that it’s shia madrassa and wont go there
