hey the mullah in the article said, whenever they run out of stuff in the kitchen, they pray and after a few mins everything just comes out of nowhere. I think we should ship him and all the other momeneen in that madrassa to africa and have em start distributing their food to the poor devils dying there. I mean i see an unlimited supply of food here
P.S. i wonder if there is any connection between all these problems the govt is facing now… i mean they seem to get a new headache every other day

I am not quite as optimistic. When we went to Isloo last winter, we saw a lot more hardening of attitudes in my husband's family. They are an army family, and while they have always been conservative in certain ways, they have always been fairly secular. There are now a couple of cousins who beat up the younger kids who aren't praying, a lot more niqabis (at their brother's insistence), people destroying others books and CDs, and so on. The elders make excuses for it or try to say that it's just a phase but it seemed much more serious than that to my husband and I. We saw this pattern in many of the middle-class families we visited.
I am not attacking anyone who is religious - my husband and I both consider ourselves to be so, but I don't think it can be forced, and I don't think that the particular "brand" of Islam that is being promoted is accurate.
When we talked to various family members about what is happening now, the elders just say "oh, the youth are frustrated, nothing will come of it", the younger ones who are interested in Islam say it's time for jihad in Pakistan, and the secular ones pass the students off as crazy people and don't take it seriously. That attitude worries me more than anything.
Lets hope the elders and secular people are right on this... Still it worries many people.

may be musharraf / tv channels stop pushing pakistani society into "fahashi"and the there will be no reaction.If i was in pakistan I will fully support these mullah/talibanisation till musharaff knows its pakitan--not turki and he is musharaf not kamal ata turk
The fight is between the relgious conservatives and liberals, who are still relatively religous... Its about the right of people to watch such channels if they want... Its about living your life as you choose, according to your OWN understanding of Islam, not having it imposed on you... You may not like these channels and they may not be "Islamic" in your view, but thats not how others see it... It comes down to whether we are willing to submit to you interpreting Islam for us or allowing people the liberty to define Islam for themselves.

My point was that regardless of the laws, the people must feel secure. The whole "kill em all" mentality among the secular sectarians here will not help that concern one bit.
You seem to be giving the relgious fanatics free reign to "implement" these Laws..
This is a very dangerous attitude.. There is a reason why mob justice is frowned upon, because mob justice is indiscriminant. Today its alleged brothels, AND I emphasize alleged because they have yet to issue any proof, tommorow it will be women who dont cover their heads, or people who are out during prayer time, or people who play music in their car? Where does it end?
No justice is better then mob justice I can tell you that much.
And kill em all attitude isnt a secular sectarian concept, its the basic doctrine followed by just about all these relgious fanatics... Anyone who has dealt with these fanatics knows, that they have no scruples, they are willing to kill anyone including themselves for their narrow aims.. The head of the Madrassa said it himself, his students are ready to give their lives for this cause.
BTW, it disgusting how you accuse the kidnapped woman of runing a brothel without any proof... Thats not only against Islam, but against basic descency...

thats what my point is. its a reaction to musharaf's steps of pushing pakistan into shamelessness. I agree we have made serious progress under musharaf era-- but do we "HAVE TO" to leave our values behind too?? Tv channels and cable are currupting people's mind. Some one has to bring that to an end. after that musharaf can still keep doing good economic work- I don't argue about that.

who is asking anyone to leave their personal values behind. but then people can not force their personal values on others.
so someone wants to live a conservative life, they should be free to do so, but they have no right to force others to live their life.
if they have that much of an issue, then they need to have a grassroots movement to change the society, not by force like these uncouth chimps we see in this damn madrissa, but like decent human beings through dialogue, discussions, education, whatever.
Majority of ppl in Pakistan may not be for unchecked bayhayai, but that does not mean they are for its polar opposite of unchecked puritan fanatical bullshyte that these two bit beardos dictate as religion and religious obliigation.

Tv has never corrupted my mind or that of anyone else I know... Besides, why should that concern you? Worry about yourself and your kids, leave society to itself... As far as I can tell, the sky hasnt fallen, people still pray, the mosques still give azan, women dont walk around naked, no one is drunk in public, there are no night clubs etc... In fact, by most accounts, Pakistan is MORE conservative today then they were 30 years ago when there was no Cable...
You seem so concerned with Cable, why not tackle real issues like Child labor, abuse of women, sexual abuse of Children, soaring crime etc... Those are the real issues facing Pakistan.

Yeah, im sure without cds, and music and Cable, Pakistan will finally be a TRUE Islamic country!
Its infuriating how simple minded people are, its such an insult to Islam really... These people should be charged with Blasphemy for defacing Islam like this!
Im always suprised how people sacrafice logic and reasoning in the name of relgion, when they should be useing logic and reasoning to understand and apply it.

^I agree, politicians and clergy alike always focus on non-issues, coz no one has to do anything solid about it. Demonstrations can bring fame and new contacts with people in power and some following.

Its very difficult I think to create just and progressive Islamic society in the true sense of the word... It would require a deeper understanidng of the relgion and society as a whole... The madrassa students and their teachers are just memorizing the Koran and vomit up the same shallow perscription for the society, you know, ban cd's, make people pray, make women cover up etc. because like you aid its easy to do this and give the impression of piety... But I also think that they simply dont have the intelectual fortitude, or wisdom and clarity to create a system that would do justice to Islam.. They simply arent scholors. You know, Rumi said a Donkey with a thousand Korans on its back would still be a donkey.
We need the likes of Iqbal, and other great scholars to lead the way towards a real Islamic society.. Not these Madrassa donkeys.

I agree to all you say except TV channels, after all how hard is it for people to switch the channel they don't like.
