Mac vs PC for Programming

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I currently own a 16G RAM Laptop, with 512 SSD and 2G of Nvidia graphics card. Check out Dell XPS 9530. Its by far the best laptop for windows and it weigh around 2 lbs. I believe it beats MacBook hands down.

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

i personally own both. the mac mini is extremely good value for money with the Haswel processors. Visual Studio Code means you could do your .net development on the native os. Also, using BootCamp, you can configure windows to run on the mac pretty well ( I am running a Biztalk 2013 server on a bootcamped mac )

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Is it this one

9530-3132 - XPS 15 i7-4712HQ (3.3Ghz 6MB) 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz 512GB SSD 1Yr CAR Win8. - PC World Business

Almost same price as MAC

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Yup, I actually purcased a MacBook retina display before that. I used it for 20 days and returned it. The biggest reason was the compatibility with lots of softwares. Sure i could have used “Parallels” but i wasn’t just being comfortable.

Now with windows, I can have VM of Ubuntu & MacOS

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Wow you spoke my mind. I was thinking even if i get MAC , there would be high chances of returning it back after few days.
Did you order the laptop from Dell's website directly?

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I ordered it from Dell's website.

to be honest, I understand why lots of people (programmer) prefer linux or mac machines, for me the biggest thing come down to software compatibility. I can have all those OS running on my windows machine but not the other way around and thats my strongest reason to stay with windows.

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Any other good laptop but cheaper than this? It seems quite pricey.

What do you use your laptop for? Do you play games on it?

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

In the 14" arena, the Gigabyte P34W V3 is an excellent choice.. You'll get a i7-4720HQ, 970M, 16GB RAM etc and a great 14" IPS screen...

In the 15" arena, I would recommend the Clevo P650SG with a i7-4720HQ, up to 32GB RAM, 980M, IPS screen etc

If you do want a lot of CPU power, there is the Clevo P750ZM with i7-4790K desktop processor, upgradeable 980M MXM GPU, up to 32GB RAM, IPS screen etc.. Battery life wise it's only 1-2 hours at best but power wise, it's just ownage..

you can customize and reduce your cost.

My main usage is programming and I needed multiple OS's (VM's). I rarely play game on it though i wish ... :(

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I actually have it the other way around. I run virtual box on my linux machine for windows. :)

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I tried to get used to of virtualbox. Its not tha mature

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I need a laptop that has good RAM 16GB or even more so i can run Eclipse all the time and browse or do even more stuff, I do not play games. Any good Window laptop here Laptops - Best Laptops Offers | PC World ?

I use VM but to work locally since we have more server live environment etc

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I would recommend a MacBook Pro 15, you dont need a dedicated GPU, the integrated Intel Iris Pro will be good enough for your requirements. For a software dev, as long as you dont exclusively works with .Net framework, Macs are better, higher resolution/better screens, longer battery life, better keyboard and track pad and overall better built quality. For the software side, you can run almost all the OS on a MBP, you can run them on VMs or triple boot OSX, Windows and Linux if you want (actually for a Java Dev, the underlying OS doesn't matters much, its the IDE and the framework stack that matters)

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Had some trouble when I first bought my MAC.....but I love it now!!....mac takes getting use too but awesome in the end

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

I like laptop for everyday use!

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Whatever you buy make sure you get good RAM and SSD.

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

What are your main activities ? playing games on laptop?

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

This is what I want especially good RAM 16GB or 32GB, any suggestions?

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

32 GB

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

Any 32GB specific model and brand?

Re: Mac vs PC for Programming

if weight and brand isn't a big concern then go for a custom laptop. I got one of those 4 years ago when 4G of ram was a norm and I got 16G. The laptop was a beast + really cheap compared to any branded model. The only downside i had was its weight (7lbs) + bad battery.
