Every institution should have their own constitution & (merit-based) system in place whereby the senior most General and Judge automatically gets promoted to the top position if & when it becomes vacant and the PM is merely required to approve their respective nominations. We must free these two important institutions (judiciary and military) of any government or political influence and interference. The government should only appoint AG. Parliament can easily pass a bill in this regard

Not if he does what he's expected to do. There could be extension(s) in line for him just like the predecessor.

No it doesn't work like that in the army. Your retirement age is determined by your rank. Retirement age is different for a brigadier, major general, lieutenant general and so on. If a brigadier for instance does not get a promotion in time he might have to retire in his early 50s. But if he does get promoted to major general then his career will be extended by 3 years. If as expected, Lieutenant General Haroon Aslam does get promoted to the rank of a 4-star general (and becomes COAS) in Nov 2013, his army career would be extended by three years. If not then he will retire in April 2014

Pakistani public could use a nice chuckle in otherwise bitter political news. Musharraf do the comic bid, and come on TV to say "I am ready to become the COAS again, to serve the nation under PM Nawaz Sharif". For no other reason, than to make people laugh. I definitely would. Not sure if PM would find any humor in it, considering.....

Even one extension is too many imo. I am just against this culture of extensions chahe woh federal secretary ho ya army chief because aap kissi ka haq maar rahe hein...very unfair on the person who is next in seniority
