Lost Words...

of Punjabi.

As most punjabi speakers are bilinguals, meaning they can also speak hindi/urdu, frequent code-switching over time leads to acquisition of words of urdu/hindi and loss of punjabi words.

Recently i’ve come across some punjabi words that i haven’t heard/used in a long time, and it’s usually when you speak to elders back home that you realize you don’t use some of them any more.

chagga = kameez
suTHaN = shalwar
paNday = bartan = dishes
bahari = jharoo
dava-dav = chaitee chaitee = jaldi jaldi

Reej = dil laa ke (i could be wrong with the translation)

aughan = bad qualities
nira-pura = same looking as

boowa = darwaaza
kauwl = round bowl Jis me paani peete haye,
saloona = salan
chaw chaw = jaldi jaldi

oor yaad aaye to oor likh du ghi ..

Sehar, thanks for starting the thread..it increased my vocabulary. Some words the guppies mentioned here as being lost words..i hear them all the time :)

here is another tukkar-boch : the person only after money/food

pheedo? what is it?
kurkulla: you mean khurkanna, brush like thing used to clean horses' skin?

a similar word is: innoo or phinoo = a little cloth pad cushion put on head when you lift something heavy.

Interesting thread.

We use bawhaan for arms,
bawaan= bahain=bazoo

Now, at home we usually say 'bawaan which dard' , hence I wud translate that in urdu and wud use bahain which I realized it isn't frequently used in everyday spoken urdu as its sounds more sensual than the word bazoo :(

Another word,

Bariaan= khirkiyaan=windows

Chanji, I have heard that word kharkanna but not in that context. Never knew what it meant, however. It was used to describe a guy, I guess " ewayeeen kharknaa jiya"

Chitha=cheenta=splash "chitha maar kay aa moon tay"
I have to be careful in using such words.

Kora=karwa=bitter

Mitha=meetha=sweet

phika=pheeka=bland

Ajeeb kora sa taste hai, oops... karwa

keeriyaan=chewntiaan in urdu

dawai=dawa

Ever noticed how we use different sounds to denote different acts, umm here is one

kharich=to break something, usually neck :D

to kia yeh tay hai kay ab umr bhar naheen milna
to phir yeh umr bhi kyoon, tum say gar naheen milna

Karachiites have inducted so many urdu words in Punjabi that it has lost its punjabi touch, however, it seems more refined than usual. (no pun intended)

Sar ditta= jala diya

we use jala dita na instead of sar dita

bow=boo=smell

kashbow=kushboo :)

khalotta=khara

chittrool=pitai

Oh, no Moona. That was just a joke.
I am a punjabi myself and we do use such words so it doesn't hurt to make fun once in a while. Now, pleaseeeeeee don't take that seriously.

I find I always have to write something on a steamed mirror.

lost soul I can relate to what you said. I have to think twice before I speak urdu incase I end up saying “mein panDay dhoh rahee huN”!

Some more words I remembered:
kashuk - chamach - spoon
thaali - plate
jandra - taala - lock
kunji - chaabi - key
qoTah - kamra - room
munshi - ustaad - male teacher
ustani - female teacher
majma - serving tray - I dunno if this word is used in urdu too.

Does anyone know what Dedvey or DedRvi (sp) is? we use this word alot (it’s the usually ‘kaccha’ family/dining/living room) but i don’t know if it is a made up word in my family or is actually a punjabi word.

i faintly recall them being used in the context of a ball and bat!! never knew if they were really words..

wangaa = chooriyaan

khoope = glasses, I heared my dadi often using this word for her glasses

tooli = jis me khaana banaate haye, also called a haandi
