This isnt about girls that wear tight clothing while wearing hijab. It’s about makeup.
Let’s say I decide to wear hijab one day. I decide to spend time every morning putting on foundation, lipstick, eyeliner, gloss, powder and whatever else, in a manner that I feel makes me look more “beautiful” and more “presentable” to myself. I take my time applying the lipstick to make it look just right. As a result, people see me and seem more attracted to me due to the makeup, and I know this because of the reaction I get when I wear it, as opposed to when I dont wear it. Therefore, I know people find it very attractive. (This is a hypothetical, I am not saying I look attractive.)
My question is, does this defeat the purpose of hijab, if at all?
Let’s say I only wear lipstick and surma. But I know that by wearing it, more people would look at me than if I dont wear it at all. Does this defeat the purpose of hijab? Or since this is “less” or “light” makeup, does this mean it is not as bad as heavy makeup? Where do you draw the line, if any?
The argument that its just how you feel about yourself when wearing makeup wouldnt really stand up due to the fact that a girl may wear a see-through top and say it makes her feel good regardless of what others see/think, but the fact is, everyone would agree that it isnt “Islamic” in nature. Therefore guidelines do exist, outside of our own thinking. However, I seek to know your thinking on this matter, and how you draw your conclusions.
I’d like to know guys and girls opinions on this. I’d also like to ask guys if your wife wore hijab, would you like it if she wore a lot of makeup? Thanks.

I do not. Plus, you havent seen me. smile
lussi, I'd like to know guys opinions on this as well. Whether they think it defeats the purpose if a girl is all decked out in makeup while wearing hijab. Thanks.
I've seen quite a few hijabis (usually arabs) look stunningly gorgeous cause they wear lots of eye make up (liner, mascara, loads of eye shadow), which enhances their beauty, with light lipstick. Personally, when makeup is worn in this manner, I do think it defeats the whole purpose. Talking about thick eyeshadow, liner, mascara, etc. As far as I know, the hijab is about being modest. When people wear lots of make up, it does draw attention to them ... which isn't very modest at all. I guess an example of this would be that Saudi presenter who was beaten up by her husband. You see her photo on the BBC website and she looks gorgeous .... but she's wearing quite a bit of makeup. ;) Dunno, just my view on it. I really have no idea where you would draw the line.
However, as with every other part of life and how you live, your intentions/niyat play a huge factor. To say that girls wear make-up just to attract attention from men is silly ... well, maybe some girls do but surely not all do. The reality is though, that when girls do wear make up, they are noticed more.

No ,Munni I dont think it defeats the purpose.I mean I dont see anything wrong with looking good. You want to feel beautiful ,so go for it.
I personally dont wear a lot of makeup- I do wear a hijab. But I wear eye liners and a clear lip gloss.
You're doing it to feel comfortable with yourself.Theres also the fact that "your actions depend on your intentions."

MQ, I've heard a lot of people say that your intentions are the only things to consider, but from what I have read, two things matter. Your intentions, and if an action is allowed in Islam or not. Therefore, it is not just the intention. However, this is my understanding and perhaps others dont agree.

Obviously intentions arnt the only thing that matter, some thingfs have been clearly defined in islam as right or wrong.
Edit: I just realized i myself am not 100% clear on this subject.
But i stand by my earlier post, makeup attracts and thus defeats the purpose of hijab.
i dont think it defeats the purpose at all...who says whats modest and whats not?
I don't actually believe in rules for hijab..its part of life and life has no rules, one should do, think and believe whatever they feel best.
Munni if you wear a lot of makeup just to attract attention -possibly its wrong. But just a little bit- to make yourself feel comfortable -hows that wrong? What if a girl has bad skin, and needs to wear foundation or something ,because she doesnt want to go out in public like that? And subtle makeup -most people wear it- it just kind makes your skin/face look nicer- doesnt exactly make it stand out.

MQ, I am not saying it is right or wrong. Everyone's views are different, and that is what I seek to know. The view, and the reasoning for it.
My point is simply that Islam has guidelines, just as every religion and nation does. I'm simply interested in how muslims decide what these guidelines are in relation to this topic.
^^ i so agree with you.. I have bad skin, and I feel the need to put on foundation. I wouldn't do that if I had a good, clear skin. It just makes me feel comfortable that people are looking into my eyes rather than looking at my bad skin.....(by the way..my make-up only includes foundation)
YES, i do think it defeats the purpose of hijab. BY wearing a hijab and make-up you are convincing yourself that wearing hijab doesn't distract others as long as you have make-up on. Isn't that true?? The truth is lying in your subconscience and you know it...(all hijabis who wear make-up)

Hijab or no hijab, I wouldnt want her to wear a lot of makeup anyway.
just one of the many conflicts one comes across when they interpret religion without common sense.
Hijab is related to modesty.. not getting wrapped up in 10 yards of black cloth.
so if you ARE wrapping yourself up like that, and then working on looking "beautiful and presentable to yourself" you have to ask yourself one question.
Oh I have no idea about this. I think the basic purpose of hijab is not to send "wrong" kind of signals. That is possible even without completely turning into a ninja, isnt it?
