Re: Look me in the eye
and yes wht abt ur "western evil" culture??..tthousands of rape every month, illegal children etc etc
Again, don't be so quick to claim some morally superior culture. That soap box you are speaking from is as flimsy as your "not looking into the eye = protects women" theory.
In your culture it may show respect, but in other cultures (such as the scenario in this thread), it is a show of disrespect. The woman at the university was not 'protected' by the Muslim not looking into her eyes, unless the man was such a sicko that doing so would make him rape her.
Re: Look me in the eye
Actually, American women do enough on their own that would make a rapist rape them. And it happens ever six minutes in neighborhoods around America. An idea of Muslim man not looking at a woman because it would make him rape her is an absurd assertion and we should avoid such baseless and open-ended conclusions.
Re: Look me in the eye
Does she still care? If she does, I say you just tell her to get her answers from him. If I were in your position, when she was asking why you look at her while he doesn't, I'd just say something like "It's due to my own weakness."

In Saudi Arabia, not looking at a woman while talking to her is practiced while in the US, men and women talk as if pals...
The incidence of rape in SA is zilch...No rapes...Ever...
What is the ratio here? If you had a daughter, where do you believe she would be most safe?
It may be a show of disrespect to you but so is not allowing your daughters, mothers and sisters to spend nights out with strange men for pleasure...
Different strokes for different folks...No need to question other's motives if they are different...You don't have to accept them but you must respect them...
Re: Look me in the eye
Ok, save all your lectures and give me a link to a real fatwa giver. Please.

Re: Look me in the eye
THink of this as an opportunity for dawah. And I dont mean go upto her and ask her to convert
. I mean talk to her about Islam, put it in good light rather than make her feel weird and uncomfortable. Explain to her why we believe its respectful. If we are gonna have this I-dont-wanna-deal-with-it-attitude, how can we expect other people to know about our religion and respect it? And then we blame them for being ignorant?

At what price are women in SA 'safe'?
Kids wouldn't get into fights if they didn't go to school. Do we keep them all home?
You wouldn't get sick if you didn't get out in public around people with germs, do you never meet people then?
There wouldn't be any car accidents if we all walked. Should we outlaw cars?
And how would a woman report a rape anyway? Have the man that raped her drive her to the police station to report it where her testimony will only count as 1/2 as that of the man?
If I had a daughter, I would sacrifice my life before I condemned her to live in SA.
Anyway this incident took place in the west where it is rude and disrespectful to not meet eye contact. So it is the man in the example that has to deal with it and accept it.
Re: Look me in the eye
As far as I know, American is a "free" country. The man has every right to follow his religion the way he likes. Americans are extremely ethnocentric, its about time they started accepted other people the way they are.
Re: Look me in the eye
Ethnocentric, are you kidding me?! It is the biggest melting pot in the world with people of all races, religions, creeds and beliefs. And this comes on a post about SA, one of THE MOST ethnocentric and discriminating societies on earth?
It's not that peole don't accept them, it is not part of the culture to treat women that way. Just as an American women driving a car with her hair down, blaring the radio would not be accepted in SA.
Re: Look me in the eye
SA doesnt claim to be a free country, America does. When you say people here have the right to practice their religion as long as they are not hurting anyone/anything let them and learn to respect them. She has a problem with him practicing his religion, not the other way around. She needs to accept and get over it.
Re: Look me in the eye
Of course he is free to practice his 'religion', but it doesn't mean it will be accepted or respected by those who see it as a 'cultural' faux-paus. If this guy wants to integrate into American society, he'll adjust to the cultural norms. If he doesn't, then he can expect to be ostracized by many. You can't expect a culture to change to satisfy the pecularities of everybody. Muslims have no history in the development of American culture, it's a bit much to expect people to accept what is considered rude and demeaning. Just as in any culture, there are norms and mores.
Re: Look me in the eye
Thats what you think, to him its in the Quran and no matter what anyone thinks hes gonna follow it. You dont like it, shove it. Thats just the way it is.
Does anyone else other than the white man have any history in the development of America? Theres still retards out there who believe columbus discovered it:cb:
Re: Look me in the eye
It's not what I think. It is what I KNOW. In this society, it is rude. Period. I don't care if you base it on the Quran or Mother Goose.
I never said anything about the color of skin of those who contributed to American culture, only that Muslims were not part of it.
Re: Look me in the eye
How can you glorify one form of respect (looking in the eye) at the expense of another (lower gaze)? Both are way of showing respect and people should try to understand their uniqueness rather than ridicule one and push the other down our throats.

Ab dekh li na sab ne Kaafiron ki assliyat? Barey kameenay loag hain yeh.
Itni choti si baat nahein sahi jaa rahi iss bharwey se, kal ko kahen ge koi daari bhi na rakhe, dupatta bhi na pehne aur yeh ke sharaab bhi piyo aur suar khao kiyoun ke yeh Amreekan honey ki hesiyat se aap pe laazim hain.

Re: Look me in the eye
Here in Canada, they actually appreciate it once you explain it to them, from what I've seen. If they know that it's not out of disrespect, they don't mind it.
