Long flights and kid in lap

Salam. we are going to be on an 8 hour flight soon and thought we could do by having our 14 month old on our lap (the prices are outrageous). Now we are thinking otherwise but seats are not available.

Pls advise on what we can do to make it a non stressful flight for Jr. and also others on the plane and most importantly us.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

hey im also travelling soon with 12month old, on lap, and pregnant, what i found was depending on airline, they are very helpful and will usualy find an empty seats and shift u there, so hopefully ul be in luck. otherwise its the price u pay unfortunatley.

travelling to pak, we didnt book a seat for her, and we managed to get 4 seats to ourselves anyway, so she was aslp on them.

what airline u going on, emirates are brilliant..i love them, very helpful and accomodating.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

Dont take the risk I say. Its not safe.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

**choose an airline and time of travel when there is a good chance to find two empty seats together...yo9u can use an empty seat BUT during take off and landing the baby must be in ur lap for safety reasons. it's the federal law.

during peak season, it's difficult to find an empty seat so travel in the off-peak season.**

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

WHatever u do, dont book the front row. The armrests cant be moved and ure gonna be ubber uncomfy!Otherwise... Honestly... I hope u find an empty seat... If its peak season... Good luck. I travelled on a 8 hour flight with midget and it was NOT fun. Maybe take shifts holding him? Husband and i divided his body into half ...(sounds so wrong)... Husband held the top half, i the bottom...but then midget is tall for his age... Even if u can find one empty seat, one of u can sit there whilst the kid gets its parent's seat. But thinking back to the ordeal i went through where it was a night flight and midget just wanted to sleep....i would ha e paid any price for a seat for him!

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

Thanks guys, but can't find an extra seat we wanted to but the flight is over booked. and we don't have a choice to travel off season.

Please share some other tips on how to keep kids occupied while in lap or while they are moving around.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

eeek if the flight is booked, you may not find an empty seat!!

Sorry dont know much but I cant even imagine the discomfort since 14 months old will probably want to be let go of unlike a 3 month old who can just sleep in that bassinet.... do kids have to pay full fare?

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

*tell the flight attendant you are nauseated and can't hold the baby in your lap...the staff might upgrade you to Business class ;) ... or else you buy a business class seat. *

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

Trying to fly out the day before Bunny's 2nd birthday to avoid the extra $1000. It is craziness! But will a 24monthold-ish be a pain in the lap?

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

It's usually about 80% for 2-12yo

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

75%...there is a cut-ff date and lot of desis try to beat it...some go as far as changing the date of birth ;) haha

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

Dont do it man! Unless enoo is the calm la di da kind....if she is the least bit curious....god help u!Everyone hated me im sure when i flew with midget in my lap...especially the uncle in front of me who got loads of seat kicking on midget's behalf! Embatassing!Auto: take his fav toys, lots of snacks, ure laptop he can watch youtube on.... Colors and book (though he may be too ypung for that)...

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

^ Yeah, khawa, I am reconsidering it now. I think actually the day after her bday the ticket prices drop significantly and so the difference is only like $150. I think it's worth it for the extra seat.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

^ a good friend of mine has clocked in many, many, MANY hours on planes with her kid and he’s not even 2 yet- read this: http://tickled-amna.blogspot.com/2011/08/babies-on-plane.html

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

I've traveled extensively with Noor in my lap from when she was 12 to 24 months old.........it's not fun.....particularly if your child is tall and they need to sleep. They don't fit in your lap alone so they are constantly kicking the person next to you. They don't fit in the bassinette.

Having them in your lap while you try to consume a meal is next to impossible because the tray will not open and leave you enough room.

It is definitely worth the extra bucks for a seat for them.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

GTG : In our case we had to pay full price for a seat (IT is transatlantic, two airlines.) and Muzna, we realized that after having him sit on my lap in the car. Definitely not doable. And now after realizing we are ready to fork over the bucks but sadly no seats. Praying that we do somehow get a seat, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

All I can suggest is to bring a pillow and small blanket that you can throw on the cabin floor by your feet -- sounds rather nasty but it works.
I've never tried this but I have seen several moms put their sleeping babies down there surrounded by cushy diaper bags etc. once the plane reaches cruising altitude. Keep in mind that you will have to be quick about lifting them back into your lap should the "fasten seat belt" sign come on during the flight. Inconvenient yes, but might be your best option if all else fails.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

last resort - benadryl.

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

My mom has done this..!!..I remember it as one of the most fun flights ever…:hehe:.
She actually did that with my younger sister who was under 2 at that time.It does not sound good, but it should work.

P.S…Traveling with a toddler, keeping them in my lap and being alone are the things that dont even make me miss my parents and want me to go visit them anymore…:frowning:

Re: Long flights and kid in lap

actually gravol…fewer side-effects…
but you still gotta put the body somewhere… :cb:
