who can give a potential incoming non resident pakistani valuable information? about rentals, cost of living etc.
Re: Londonistan
…browse these 2 web sites, they cover all the general topics, from B&B, transport, etc. etc.
Re: Londonistan
i need very specific information. i looked on the internet but not really getting much.
Re: Londonistan
what kind of specific info do you need?
Re: Londonistan
okay it looks like I'll be at imperial in london. for starters I need info on residences. i want affordable but decent housing, and dont want to share. should I be looking to live in south kensington? is this a really far place or is a 10 minute commute from some less pricey neighbourhood.
Re: Londonistan
I’m not knowledgeable when it comes to accomodation in and around Imperial college, although I have come across some campus addresses with whom you can ring and get some info. in terms of costs, it’s just a matter of doing some research and ringing around, more info is available from the imperial college of london website, i would suggest you have a browse and make some calls.
-Charing Cross campus W6 8RP
-Chelsea and Westminster campus SW10 9NH
-Hammersmith campus W12 0NN
-Royal Brompton campus SW3 6LY
-St Mary’s campus W2 1PG
-South Kensington SW7 2AZ
Re: Londonistan
thanks...i was hoping to avoid making the calls seeing as im in Pakistan and very ghareeb :D
Re: Londonistan
...so what are you going to study and why at imperial?
Re: Londonistan
If you want to live on your own in South Kensington, you'll be looking at a very very small place. South Kensington is one of the single most expensive places to live in the UK.
What you may find cheape is to live in the suburbs and buy a Travelcard every month. A Travelcard (the cost varies depending on how far out you live) allows you to use any public transport service (train, bus, subway) at no additional cost.
A cheaper version is the LT card, which allows just subway and bus, but no train.
To live on your own at affordable cost, I would say that you would be living about 30-60 minutes away from Imperial by public transport.
Re: Londonistan
orpheus im going to be doing a phd inshallah if all goes well. why? in what terms exactly do you want the answer to that? as far as research goes, for that specific area they're doing pretty nice work where I have some grounding in, so its a good match.
maddie, thats what I was thinking. im completely clueless about this though, where should i start?
Re: Londonistan
I only asked because as mad_scientist said living in around london is expensive, good luck anyway with your future endeavours.
Re: Londonistan
thanku :-)
Re: Londonistan
get a decent place..i might come visit you
Re: Londonistan
I have no idea where to start, unfortunnately. I lived at home in my parents house throughout my 17 years in the UK....
Maybe search online for some property rental sites?
Re: Londonistan
rav have you tried prospects.ac.uk?
Re: Londonistan
sheraz bhaijan zaroor ![]()
maddie i came across a few, but I couldnt find any that werent paid :-/. there were a couple of really good sites for amreeka like craigslist etc.
zakk i wont really be classed as a student, i’d be a uni employee and as such would have no grad student benefits as such :/, atleast immediately.
…edit… oh theres a craigslist for london!
Re: Londonistan
findaproperty dot com should give you an idea of the rent for property in the area you want to live.
also, use multimap dot com to search the postcode and you will see the nearest tube, bus station or railway stations
there are other property sites as well incl rightmove and propertyfinder
Re: Londonistan
^thanks ill look at those soon..
I asked this of maddie, I'll ask here too, can anyone tell me the cost of living for a guy in London, sans rent?
also how are leases done in the UK? It used to be typically year leases in amreeka, can I get there get a short lease for say a month, and then move to an apartment I find in the meanwhile?
does a pakistani drivers license have validity in the UK?
Re: Londonistan
