London / UK Riots

Re: London - riots

I am not labelling them to be fighters who are fighting the system. They have seen the opportunity in recent hours of looting and valuables for the taking, and they are on a roll.

Re: London - riots

I happen to disagree. There have been so many govenment cuts (education grants, youth centres, community centres). This govenment does not speak to all communities remember. They care about Mr and Mrs Poncey Yuppie.

Re: London - riots

You are making it sound like everyone in London/UK has opportunities laid out to them on a platter. It does not work that way.
You should see some of the youth growing up on council estates!

P.s. its not just you but my husband has had to work 20 hours a week too in order to fund his living whilst studying and so have many many students here in London...

Re: London - riots

well comparing it to the Pakistani situation - where such looting is a norm during riots - these Londoners ( and i aint envy here ) get easy pickings when it comes to managing a living :)

Re: London - riots

LOL dude please. some areas in london are insanely poverty stricken. and these youths have a point. the system fails them. the system fails those who try their best. why? because it's biased, because if you're not white, middle class and british then you really don't stand much of a chance. in education. in excelling. how can they make do with what little they have when they know no matter how hard they try they will always remain at the bottom of the food chain?

this government is screwed up as hell. the police institution has been under scrutiny since before the student protests, this is prolly the peak. and you know what, it just goes to show that we have no order. and as much as everyone wants to believe oh yay london what a cool city, how safe blah blah. it seems like a warzone out there and most of all our army is in a foreign country trying to sort out their affairs when we've got so much havoc that needs to be tended to. we consider ourselves to be one of the most efficient countries in the world, the most modern and here we are..

Re: London - riots

I hope all everyone and their families are ok in London - my thoughts and prayers with them.

My skipped a beat when I saw that news on violence in Oxford Circus. My uncles family lives in Westminster, I hope that these clowns don't cause trouble!

Re: London - riots

Sweet if, I agree with most of your post. The problems that were brewing in and just suddenly exploded like a lava have their roots set elsewhere i.e. the cuts and etc. And poverty stricken areas are similar to ones you can find here in subcontinent or in carribean.

Having said that, MET could have handled it better because they can. They have the resources, but they too, lack direction right now.

Re: London - riots

Urghh One cant just shift the whole blame on the system to cover his/her shortcomings ... I can write hundreds of names - whom I know personally and they arent white , middle class or British ( at some point) - But they did excel due to their hard work ..

We have example of Anwar pervaz and Alan sugar - werent they at the bottom of the food chain at some point of time in their lives ?

P.S - No dude please - The name is Naabigh .... :)

Re: London - riots

right. so you're telling me sir alan sugar is a youth of today? i'm not talking about 40 years ago uncle naabigh jee. i'm talking about now. i'm talking about places like peckham and lewisham that are so deprived. go into tooting and it's a hellhole. you cannot pick out random names who have succeeded and beat the failing system and compare that to the general consensus on how poorly some schools/areas are doing in terms of education, in terms of how their youths are kept off the streets. you can't expect every deprived kid to 'man up' and make something of themselves with nothing to start off with. it doesn't work like that, the older generations are supposed to be providing them with security, safety and yes, an education. a chance to do better than what they did. so they don't have to fall back a coupla generations.

Re: London - riots

Interesting comment about the London riots: " at times like this one is even more proud of the youth of syria, libya, yemen and egypt (amonst others) who stood and continue to stand up to truly corrupt regimes, and protect, rather than loot or terrorise their own city/country."

Re: London - riots

@sweet.i.f. That really does not justify their behaviour..

Re: London - riots

Agree with sweefa here. It doesn’t justify the riots but I can understand the frustration as this isn’t exatly golden age for the youth. Naabigh praa, if this is what the Londoners are going through, can you imagine what the bongay Irish are doing to us?! :naak:

Re: London - riots

If you actually read what she wrote you would understand she is not trying to justify their behaviour. No one is.

Re: London - riots

princess - i never said it justified their behaviour. i was merely making a point on what naabigh had stated. :)

Re: London - riots

Ohh sorry I didn't read it properly :)

Re: London - riots

Alhamdulillah Just got home safe, it was such a terrible site on the station because after 11 they leave the barriers open and literally anyone could walk in, as the train arrived bunch of black boys came in and started to break into the shop InSide the station  I was the first one to run on the staires lol and that moment police came and closed the station, had I miss the train I would have still been in some train and stuck on some station but Alhamdulillah I am home safe

Re: London - riots

The army has to be put out on the streets. Large areas of England are no go areas for decent people. It is about time either the police got more powers or the army sets up posts.

Re: London - riots

Good to know that. And horrible to know the other thing

Re: London - riots

Aminas - Gosh, dude, stay at home tomorrow!! Glad to know you are ok though.

Re: London - riots
