Well the inefficient way out is that he asks the route to the city, if the sister lies he’ll be back to the forest but then knows that the other one would lead to the city.
And if the sister tells the truth, he’ll be end up in the city.

then why would he ask the quesiton to sister? he can just take any route, the worst case he will get back into the forest and when he comes back from there he would know which path he took last time ?
